The Adult Jewish Learning Collaboration begins its fifth season with courses and seminars offered at five Palm Beach County temples through the support of the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County in West Palm Beach.

The five Conservative and Reform congregations collaborating are: Temple Beth Kodesh, 501 NE 26th Ave. in Boynton Beach; Temple Beth Tikvah, 4550 Jog Road in Greenacres; Temple Shaarei Shalom, 9085 Hagen Ranch Road in Boynton Beach; Temple Sinai of Palm Beach County, 2475 W. Atlantic Ave. in Delray Beach and Temple Torat Emet, 8600 Jog Road in Boynton Beach.

“This is our best year yet with many new courses being offered, and our theme this year is ‘Israel in the Making: Celebrating Israel’s 70th Birthday,'” said Miriam Schaffer, coordinator of ADJLC.

“The wide variety of courses include Bible, Jewish History, Hebrew, Israeli Dance, Yiddish, among other courses,” said Schaffer,

ADJLC offers 32 courses, many that are running now through May 8.

Among the courses and seminars that are beginning in November are: Advanced Conversational Hebrew on Nov. 6, 13, 20 and 27 at 10 a.m. with Naomi Malakoff at TSS; History of Israel: Biblical Times to British Mandate on Nov. 7, 14 and 28 at 2 p.m. with Richard Townes at TSS; Jewish Business Ethics on Nov. 1 and 8 at 9:45 a.m. with Rabbi David Siff at TTE; Jews in the News with Rabbi Michael Simon on Nov. 7 and 14 at 7 p.m. at TBK; Prayer Book Hebrew on Nov. 6, 13 and 20 at 2 p.m. with Miriam Schaffer at TSS; The Book of Exodus on Nov. 7, 14 and 28 at 1 p.m. with Fran Townes at TSS; What Is Zionism? on Nov. 7 and 14 at 2 p.m. with Rabbi Howard Shub at TBT and Yiddish Vinkel on Nov. 1 and 15 at 2 p.m. with Dorothy Rubin at TSS.

Please note that most of the listed courses continue to have classes past November.

The monthly Sunday Lecture Series of ADJLC in November features Dr. Mitchell Bard speaking on “What the New York Times Doesn’t Tell You About the Middle East” on Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. at TSS.

“The lectures will examine how media coverage of Israel is biased for a number of reasons, such as Israel’s open democracy. Journalists do not know the history or speak the languages of the region,” said Bard, who is the executive director of the American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise.

“There is an assumption that the media is biased and is damaging to Israel. The evidence indicates that it is not,”said Bard.

ADJLC also features book reviews by both the Jewish and Israeli Book Clubs, beginning on Nov. 15 at 2:30 p.m. with Rabbi Howard Hoffman discussing the 2013 book “Like Dreamers: The Story of the Israeli Paratroopers Who Reunited Jerusalem and Divided a Nation,” by Yossi Kline Halevi at TBT.
