Gore Defends Same-Sex Marriage

Taking a quick break from his environmental activism, Al Gore has spoken out on his Current TV site about same-sex marriage. He’s all for it.

Mr. Gore, chairman of Current TV, posted a one-minute speech on the video-sharing site stating why he thinks gay marriage should be legal. We’re not sure why, exactly, he chose this topic matter or this particular time to make such a strong case.

Like many posts on Current TV, Mr. Gore’s video is super-casual. It’s just the ex-veep sitting in an office, talking directly to the camera. There’s no introduction, either. He just starts off with his reasons for supporting same-sex marriages and why he’s frustrated with the current state of affairs.

“I think it’s wrong for the government to discriminate against people because of that person’s sexual orientation,” he says. “I think gay men and women ought to have the same rights as heterosexual men and women — to make contracts, to have hospital visiting rights, to join together in marriage, and I don’t understand why it is considered by some people to be a threat to heterosexual marriage.”

Mr. Gore’s position stands to the left of the three leading Democratic candidates, who each support some measure of civil unions but stop short of endorsing same-sex “marriage.” Dennis J. Kucinich, another Democrat, often speaks about his support of gay marriage.

Wonderful of Mr. Gore to endorse such a humanitarian cause but, did he have to wait so long in issuing it that it now sounds like a death bed confession?

Another example of his greatness.

One will always wonder why he didn’t run this year. He would’ve been an absolute lock.

I feel strongly that marriage is a contract that citizens of the country enter into. As such, it should be available to anyone of legal age. To make it illegal based on reasons of religion is one of the most egregious violations of church and state that we have in this country. I am pleased that Al Gore chooses to make this point publicly. I hope that his support will continue to further legitimize this opinion and give momentum to the push for legalization of gay marriage.

Thank you for your support! He has done a lot for this country post election and truly deserved the noble peace prize.

I love Al Gore!

Imagine if we had a president who could make such a resoundingly simple and clear case for civil rights!

But who’s the Big A going to endorse?

Time to come out of the closet on this one, Al.

What is the point? Why is this newsworthy with major issues to the country”s welfare not being addressed by the candidates?

Right on target! America is way behind most developed countries in this matter.

p.s. Gore should not endorse anybody yet. He could taint his persona if he does this early in the campaign. He’ll be needed later once the candidate is chosen.

Gore should endorse Obama. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t get along with the Clintons anymore.

If you are a citizen in this country, then you are entitled to protection under the law. Including the capability to legally define your relationship with your partner. It is not a religious issue, although some consider it sacred. It is also a legal matter. The state cares about the legal part.
There was once a time when the church would not allow actors to marry-go figure. As a result the children of actors were bastards. Get the logic?
So here is another perfect example of why the founders hit a bull’s eye when they demanded the new nation would separate church and state.
I am not gay, but I think that it is good for the democracy, or what is left of it, if all the citizens are protected by the law such as women, blacks, agnostics, pagans, evolutionists and gays(to name a few) not just those that deem themselves as worthy of God’s attention.

Asher is right. Vice President Gore would be leading all of the Democratic candidates if he were running for President. Asher, are you in or near the San Francisco Bay Area by any chance?

Gore would never endorse Obama! He has seen the debates – need I say more?

Gore is supporting Obama. He may not endorse him (given this new wrinkle), but he supports him. The debates mean nothing to the general: Gore and Kerry carried the debates against W, yet W is President. Yes, you need say more.

I would be surprised if Gore endorsed Clinton, he has better sense than to stand behind someone so polarizing and hated.

Better late than never, I suppose. But this would have been a lot more courageous, and a lot more effective at changing policy, if it had happened while he was still in office.

Why do these guys always wait until they’re out of politics to grow a pair?

#7 TH: I would certainly put Edwards closer to Gore’s own politics than Obama, especially given Edwards’s environmental and energy policies versus Obama’s pro-coal record.

No, Patriotic American Citizen, I’m from Philly – and as a matter of fact, I wouldn’t support Gore or any Democrat, but I have very little doubt that Gore would’ve won if he’d run. He must simply like whatever he’s doing now more than politics.

Gore would be called a hypocrite to endorse either Obama or Clinton. The reason is obvious. They both support increasing the use of nuclear energy in their respective energy plans; Obama more so than Clinton. Gore by all accounts is against the use of nuclear energy. There is no place to store the waste materials that last for 10,000 years. It is an environmental hazard.

gore and obama good pair.South Carolina vote obama, gore may endorse him.

Senator Obama would be an excellent endorsement pick for the former Vice President! Such a pick by Mr. Gore could be a pivotal turing point in this campaign. The Senator from Illinois is favored by true Progressives more than Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Gore must realize the extremely divisve nature of the Clintons’ candidacy (for Republicans as well as Democrats. The two Clintons are so divisive they are even trying to divide our Party so that they can get the nomination. This is not what we need for our country and our Party. Let’s hope Al Gore accepts his history making role and makes the decision to endorse Barack Obama for the Presidency!

I wish Al Gore would run. I still believe he would be one of the greatest presidents this country ever had. He’s the only politician who possesses inate decency and depth of character. He’s the only one who truly makes me still feel proud to be an American.

Unfortunately, the political puritanism that still exists in this country prevents any of the leading candidates from endorsing same sex marriages. Indeed, this is what makes Gore’s rhetoric so empty now. He has no political price to pay, so he can endorse causes that are close to him, which if he were an actual candidate, would be political suicide.

In 2000 when he ran for president Gore said he supported civil unions or contracts but not marriage. Shocking!

Another incredible feat by Al Gore–to think he was discredited so much in 2000, by Democrats and Republican… He is the only–at one time possible–candidate I would support over Hillary! So funny, they are completely different and do not seem to have a great relationship, but possess such passion and a strong work ethic–those traits really resonate with me.

I wish the people who support Gore now as a “true progressive” felt this way in 2000… He was slammed much like HRC is today. You know what they say about looking to the past …………………
