AMMAN: King Hussein of Jordan has sacked his brother as heir to the
Hashemite kingdom's throne in a move seen as aimed at retaining the
crown for his sons. The ailing 63-year-old monarch told Prince Hassan
through aides that he will appoint him as his deputy - a new post which
appears to entail limited authority, said sources in Amman. The king
returned home this week after six months of cancer treatment in the US.
Prince Hassan, aged 51, was named crown prince to succeed the king in
1965. Sources said the strongest candidate to become crown prince is
King Hussein's eldest son, Prince Abdullah. Prince Abdullah, aged
37 on January 30, is King Hussein's son from his second marriage,
to Briton Toni Gardiner.
