Mondale wins Carter hometown

PLAINS, Ga. -- Walter Mondale rode the endorsement of former President Jimmy Carter to a resounding victory in Plains with Jesse Jackson finishing a surprising second.

Carter and his wife Rosalynn were among the 384 residents of Carter's hometown to cast their votes, Plains poll manager Martha Cady said.

'We're not supposed to tell how they voted,' she said, 'but I have a pretty good idea, don't you? They spoke to everybody. They're always real friendly nice people.'

Mondale, vice president under Carter, got 216 votes, Jackson 50, Sen. Gary Hart 46, Sen. John Glenn 44, Sen. Ernest Hollings 7 and former Florida Gov. Reubin Askew 1 vote. President Reagan picked up 8 votes.

An 'above normal black turnout' helped Jackson finish second, Ms. Cady said.

Mondale also won the state. With 99 percent of the vote counted, Mondale had 207,192 votes, or 30 percent, to Hart's 186,631 votes, or 27 percent, with 2,399 of the state's 2,402 precincts reporting.
