Since its launch in 1990, Modern British History has published outstanding work on the recent history of Britain, the United Kingdom, and their global entanglements. The journal publishes exciting new research and work that places British history in conversation with the most pressing issues in the historical discipline. The journal has published landmark work by leading figures in the field while also providing a forum for the emergence of new scholars, subjects, and methods.

Modern British History is the new title of Twentieth Century British History, as of 1 January 2024. This reflects the journal’s expanding scope and vital position within the field. The editors welcome submissions that uphold the journal’s tradition of excellence by stimulating new conversations and extending knowledge about the British past from the late nineteenth century onward.

The Duncan Tanner Essay Prize
Duncan Tanner Prize
The Duncan Tanner Prize recognizes outstanding scholarship amongst postgraduate research students in Britain and abroad, and honours Duncan Tanner (1958-2010), a former editor of the journal. The competition is open to anyone currently registered for a higher research degree, or who completed one no earlier than October 2021.
2023
The journal’s editors are delighted to announce that the winner of the 2023 Duncan Tanner Prize is Holly Swenson, for an entry entitled, ‘A “High Quality” Deal: the Business of British Comedy Television in Australia, 1960-1990’. Holly Swenson is a doctoral candidate at Northwestern University. Her essay will be published in Modern British History in 2024. Congratulations Holly and thanks to everyone who entered the competition.

The Ben Pimlott Memorial Lecture
About
The Ben Pimlott Lecture is hosted by Modern British History, Oxford Journals, and King’s Contemporary British History. This lecture series was established in 2006 in honour of the late Ben Pimlott and in association with the Institute of Contemporary British History, with which Ben had close ties.

The 2023 Pimlott lecture will take place on Thursday, 6 July 2023 in London.
This year’s lecture will be given by Roberta Bivins (University of Warwick) and Mathew Thomson (University of Warwick), discussing Anniversary Fever? History and the Culture of Celebrating the Age of the NHS.
