My desk.
My paper.
My tools.
Method/Tools of choice: First, I come up with ideas. This can take anywhere from five minutes to years.I use a mechanical pencil to sketch out the cartoon first. I know there are fancier drawing pencils, but this demonstrates the lengths of my laziness. Draw and click. Then, I use brushes to ink in the drawing, and add the wash.
Tool I wish I could use better: I want to get better at using the tools I already have. Brushes look easy, but they’re complicated. I also do most drawing by hand, so I’d love to start learning how to use those computers that kids are all into these days.
Tool I wish existed: The tools of my dreams exist. I’m just trying to learn ‘em all better. If anything can beat pencils, pens, brushes, and plain old paper, I haven’t dreamt it yet.
Tricks: I’m still developing my style and technique, but I’ve gotten to the point where I’ve stopped wondering how other cartoonists are making the magic happen and I’ve started trusting what I’ve been doing. If there’s any lesson here, it’s learn from the best, but you still have to find your own way.
Misc: Every time I think I’m working as hard as I can, I realize that I can always work harder. And no one is going to do it for me. Trust me, I’ve asked around.
