3 Killed, 2 Hurt in Army Base Shooting Spree

A man went on a shooting rampage Monday at a Ft. Knox training center, killing three civilians and wounding two others, authorities said.

A man described as a suspect in the shootings later wounded himself at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Louisville, a homicide detective said.

The suspect was identified by FBI investigators as Arthur Hill of Ratcliff, Ky., a 53-year-old Vietnam War veteran with 20 years in the military and 11 years of civilian service as a base employee.

Killed were Paul Higdon, 49, of Louisville, Deborah Glenn, 36, and Wanda Simmons, 45, both of Rockhaven, Ky.

Local television reported that Hill recently filed an equal employment opportunity complaint against Higdon and told co-workers he blamed the supervisor for many of his own personal problems, including health ailments.

TV reports also said co-workers described Hill as a poor employee who argued with Higdon often, before being transferred to another job at Ft. Knox two weeks ago.

Hill was described as in critical condition. Louisville police Lt. Gene Sherrard said Hill was an outpatient at the VA hospital.

The two wounded were taken to University Hospital in Louisville, where spokeswoman Gayle Jewitt said they were in critical condition and undergoing surgery for chest wounds.
