Weary Kyrgyz voters to elect parliament after alleged 'coup plot'

Sunday's rerun of botched 2020 polls comes as COVID stifles economy, China trade

BISHKEK -- Kyrgyzstan goes to the polls for the third time this year on Sunday, for a long-delayed rerun of the 2020 parliamentary election that ended in the government's downfall.

This time, voters will be electing deputies to a downsized parliament with diminished powers and hoping there will be no further upheaval, amid persistent economic pressure from the COVID-19 pandemic. Friday already brought one dramatic turn of events, however: The security service announced it had thwarted a plot to seize control of the state.
