I’m gonna be like FTVLive where I first heard about this story… shhh!!! Don’t let anyone know that KTLA is about to add another hour-long newscast.
Starting next Tuesday, May 1st, KTLA 5 will be adding YET another hour of news, this time at 11:00 a.m. with the KTLA 5 Midday News. It will compete against KCBS 2 (CBS; half-hour), KNBC 4 (NBC; hour-long) and KABC 7 (ABC; hour-long) for local news at that time in the market.
KTLA’s midday anchor Glen Walker tweeted a tease about it but FTVLive seems to have put that tweet into a confirmation.
Glen Walker and Lu Parker, who already anchor the station’s hour-long 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. newscasts, will also helm the new hour at 11:00 a.m. as well. This will give KTLA 5, at least eight hours of live and local news in the morning into midday from 4:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., the ONLY station in L.A. that’ll do so and the first in the country.
WJBK 2 (FOX) in Detroit will soon add a half-hour extra to its morning news at 4:00 a.m. in September and will become the second in the country to do so. WISH 8 (CW) already airs eight hours of local programming through six hours of local morning news from 4:00-10:00 a.m. and midday news from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. with a local lifestyle show in between from 10:00-11:00 a.m.
Also, for the record, the KTLA 5 Morning News team will not be involved with the midday newscast so they’re done after 11:00 a.m.
In other words, eight hours of live, local news and programming is uncommon but its out there and KTLA will be another example of it. Credit to FTVLive for this but its supposed to be a secret so shhhh…

Maybe KTLA should convert to a 24-hour local all day news channel since their adding news right and left. I wonder how KTLA news will do if the Sinclair/Trubune merger is approved?

No way! They should cut their news output by 43%. That will teach them to stay away from weather hype and endless car chases.

“No way! They should cut their news output by 43%” They just might do that if the Sinclair/Tribune merger happens and KTLA will be owned by Sinclair. Sinclair stations have been know to cut newscasts. KSNV in Las Vegas was expanding news like KTLA before Sinclair bought the station. After Sinclair bought KSNV they scaled back on some newscasts on that station. WGN could possibly scale back on news if Sinclair buys Tribune since it has been expanding news right and left in the past few years like KTLA.

Sinclair already lacks traditional in-house news operations at some of its stations. Either they have a news share agreement with competing station or cable outlet (as seen with WPGH and WXLV), or news being produced by a station (of same ownership) in a different market (like WTWO), or no news broadcast at all (like WTWC). Sinclair having the must-run packages (Mark Hyman, Boris Epstien, Terrorism Alert Desk) for its stations.
I wouldn’t be surprised if WPIX, KTLA, and WGN see newscasts scaled back in certain areas, and veteran talents likely not getting contracts renewed, and so forth.
