From 1595 on, Spanish and English explorers discoverered the area that is now French Polynesia. In 1842 chiefs of the Marquesas Islands ceded sovereignty to France. Other islands were annexed until 1900 to become the French Settlements in Oceania. In 1903 the settlements were united to form French Oceania, which became an overseas territory in 1946 and which received internal self-government in 1956. It was then renamed the Territory of French Polynesia. In 2003 French Polynesia was granted more autonomy, and its status was changed to that of a French overseas collectivity. It received the additional designation of French overseas country in 2004.

English French Polynesia - Collectivity of French Polynesia

French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity and a constituent part of the French Republic, with the additional designation of "overseas country" (French: pays d'outre-mer, or POM) in the southern Pacific Ocean. It has maritime borders with ► Kiribati, the ► Cook Islands, and ► Pitcairn Islands. It is made up of several groups of Polynesian islands, the most famous island being Tahiti in the Society Islands group, which is also the most populous island, and the seat of the capital of the territory (Papeete).
