Oppose. I don't see a pattern of hostility here deserving a block. Don-kun may have failed to assume good faith by calling your actions "trolling". Jcb, when you repeatedly edited his comment, he became angry and called you a troll and a vandal for doing so. Sometimes it's better to just let minor comments like "trolling" slide. The only administrative action that makes sense is to say to both of you: please stay mellow. Let's not escalate this. Guanaco (talk) 23:04, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
Well, I didn't call you 'a troll' at first, but called your specific behaviour in that request trolling, which makes a difference. And I am not the only one thinking like that, as you can see in the other statements, I was just more direct. And it is not appropriate to change other users statements just because of an unpleasing part, that is however based on the arguments before. That may be done by a third party/admin, but not yourself. --Don-kun (talk) 06:12, 7 November 2017 (UTC)

Sock puppetry by AlexanderHovanec

AlexanderHovanec (talk · contribs) was previously asked not to remove deletion notices (User talk:AlexanderHovanec#Please do not remove deletion requests) so has instead decided to remove them by using an IP instead 108.39.216.22 (talk contribs WHOIS RBL abusefilter tools guc stalktoy block user block log). DrKay (talk) 20:53, 22 November 2017 (UTC)

Terribly sorry for that. I was logged out of my Wikipedia account, so that's why my IP appears instead of my username. I'm well aware of sock puppetry and did not intend to appear as another person. Also, I removed the deletion banner a second time because I thought I'd met the criteria. I now understand that only administrative positions can do so, and thus will not be attempting to delete banners anymore. I see that this is a page for "blocking" and "protection" but I think the inclusion of my account is incorrect and wrong as I have no plans of jeopardizing Wikipedia's criteria and content. It is all a misunderstanding and the dilemma that has been listed should not occur again.
Additionally, I'd like to question the authority and judgement of DrKay (talk · contribs). It seems as if he has a history on Wikipedia as well. The user has deleted many of the discussions on his talk page. Once he has even been blocked for intolerable behavior, but seems to have attempted to cover it up my deleting the discussion.
So I apologize for any trouble it seems I've caused, but notice that my efforts to delete the files weren't stubborn or consistent. I have learned the ways of Wikipedia and vow to act more responsibly in the future. Disregarding the mistaken accusation of sock puppetry, I'm trying to better myself and my contributions. Thank you. -- AlexanderHovanec (talk) 20:59, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
See Commons:Talk page guidelines and Commons:Assume good faith. DrKay (talk) 21:11, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
I'm afraid I don't understand which portions of the links I need to read. The links are recommendations on how a discussion on a talk page should go. This is obvious. But I do not see why they were linked. So, I've basically met the requirements of the first link. However, apparently I'm not being concise. I apologize for that. Second off, "good faith"? I do not understand why this was linked either. -- AlexanderHovanec (talk) 21:17, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
Per the guidelines, I can archive my own talk page if I wish. You should assume good faith and withdraw unfair accusations. DrKay (talk) 21:22, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
I'm terribly sorry. I was not accusing you of anything. I simply questioned your judgement in this matter based on how things have gone in the past for you. There is nothing wrong with making a valid point that may potentially aid in how a discussion goes. This means that it was not unfair to question your judgement.
However, I'd like to point out that you've made an unfair accusation yourself by accusing me of intentionally sock puppet-ing. I notice you've told a user to "practice what they preach" in the past, so perhaps you should too. I was not accusing you of anything, I was making a point (that is backed up by evidence -- said evidence which can be found in your history). I will, in turn, dismiss your accusation of my supposed sock puppet-ing (which you also backed up by evidence by digging into my past).
But I do apologize for the trouble. Regards. -- AlexanderHovanec (talk) 21:29, 22 November 2017 (UTC)

Obvious sockpuppet of AhmedShameelKhokhar786. Train2104 (talk) 15:26, 24 November 2017 (UTC)

I'd like to see this file fully protected. It's undergone persistent slow edit-warring and always gets reverted back to the original revision. It's one of the best quality world maps (in terms of labelling, clarity, etc.) on Commons and I believe this edit warring is impeding its use, as well as making it nearly impossible for the file to be updated by consensus. For example, contributors adding ISIS, disputed states, etc.

In it's original form, it shows, as of the November 2011, the UN member and observer states (and their dependent territories) and Western Sahara. Some disputed areas between UN states are shown as hatched, but no non-UN member or non-UN observer states are included. Such states should not be added because it changes the basis of the file.

The file does however need updating to 2017, which would include:

  1. Adding the State of Palestine, now a UN observer state
  2. Hatching Crimea to show this as a disputed territory (since the 2014 annexation by Russia)

As well as possibly showing more disputed territories as hatched (it doesn't appear to be clear why some areas are hatched and others are not).

However all of these matters should be discussed on the talk page and protecting the file would force contributors to take their arguments to the talk page and not edit war.

Thanks,

Rob984 (talk) 18:27, 24 November 2017 (UTC)

Other administrators, I've given this indefinite full protection (upload only), since the state of things in November 2011 is generally unambiguous and shouldn't get updates for post-2011 developments. This user continues uploading copyvios after a warning five days ago. There is no evidence of the claimed licenses at the claimed sources. If a file is tagged {{PD-Malaysia}}, there is no date of original publication, name of author, or death date of author to back the claim of {{PD-Malaysia}} for that artistic work.   — Jeff G. ツ 01:47, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

This is crazy. I have tried to put the source links on each files to support that the file passed {{PD-Malaysia}} and I now was reported for blocking. Molecule Extraction (talk) 01:50, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
@Molecule Extraction: You should have provided correct licensing at the time of upload for every file you ever uploaded. You have not done that once since you were warned.   — Jeff G. ツ 01:58, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
It is the correct license that I use, the files really passed {{PD-Malaysia}}. The license already stated:

Para 1:

For literary, musical or artistic works, copyright subsists for 50 years after the death of the author. Copyright for unpublished works subsists for 50 years after the publication. For anonymous or pseudonymous works copyright subsists for 50 years after publication unless the author is made known.

Para 3:

Works by the government, governmental organisations and international organisations are subject to copyright for 50 years after publication: sections 11 and 23. However, the texts of laws, judicial opinions, and government reports are always free from copyright: section 3 (definition of literary work).

Each of the local government (city, town) administration government is formed prior to the formation of Malaysian Federation in 1963 (which is now already passed 50 years) with each of the symbols is created prior to its establishment. Molecule Extraction (talk) 02:05, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

@Molecule Extraction: So they were created under different copyright laws, what were those? Why weren't the files tagged correctly at the time of upload? It is your responsibility as an uploader not to infringe copyright at the time of upload.   — Jeff G. ツ 02:13, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
No, it is not, it's actually under the same license. The reason I upload it with for example "own license" at the time of the upload is because of a slow internet. I use the upload wizard tool because it is much faster than the basic uploader. While during the uploading session there is no other license choice than the license I want to use so I just use the normal license which I will make a correction after the uploading session. Molecule Extraction (talk) 02:18, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
@Molecule Extraction: No, you didn't start using {{PD-Malaysia}} until 00:57, 21 December 2017 (UTC).   — Jeff G. ツ 02:50, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
So although I made some mistake in uploading process when I didn't using the template "at the time of uploading" even though the files is already free from copyright, is it still liable for deletion? Molecule Extraction (talk) 02:55, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

Jeff, could you rather help a productive user of WikiCommons instead of scaring away people that are needed for the project? Adding {{PD-Malaysia}} is already healing the situation. --CEphoto, Uwe Aranas (talk) 11:21, 21 December 2017 (UTC) Ditto, PD-Malaysia enough for licensing..*angys* (talk) 11:34, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

May want to evaluate/keep an eye on this

There seems to be a bit of an edit war going on involving File:Yemeni Civil War.svg and the related File:Yemeni Civil War.jpg and File:Yemeni Civil War1.png which appears to have spilled over here and here. Just leaving this here in case anyone feels that some action needs to be taken or for monitoring in case something needs done in the near future. GMGtalk 15:20, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Yes, Panam2014 should be blocked for being an obstructionist. I simply created a map that was derived from the template at that time and he reverts me, because his “POV” or his “perspective” is not incorporated in such map.Chilicheese22 (talk) 16:02, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

I have posted to all the relevant talk pages and the DR. Please discuss at File talk:Yemeni Civil War.svg. This is not the right place.   — Jeff G. ツ 16:33, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

@GreenMeansGo: Chilicheese22 should be blocked from MetaWiki because of his pov pushing, obtruction and distruptive editing. He have edited the file without consensus. He continues.--Panam2014 (talk) 19:17, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
@Panam2014: What POV does he seem to be pushing?   — Jeff G. ツ 19:22, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: he removes all mention of the STC because the Yemeni government does not recognize it. --Panam2014 (talk) 19:23, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

I tried to start a constructive dialog at File talk:Yemeni Civil War.svg, but it has degenerated into personal attacks.   — Jeff G. ツ 00:31, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

@Chilicheese22: Regardless of which map is correct, you have been uploading a raster image to File:Yemeni Civil War.svg. If you don't know how to correctly edit an SVG, don't overwrite one under any circumstances. I recommend Inkscape for SVG editing. Changes can also be made with a text editor if you know the syntax. Guanaco (talk) 00:42, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
  • There is a POV dispute which involves this image and these two editors on enwiki on a topic subject to enwiki's community discretionary sanctions, which I attempted to mediate but which also degenerated in a similar fashion. I'm not really familiar with how things are done here, but I think it might be a good preventive measure to protect that image, and delete the duplicates uploaded at File:Yemeni Civil War.jpg and File:Yemeni Civil War1.png. Ivanvector (talk) 00:49, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

@Ivanvector: BREAKING NEWS : The duck is positive. So my request was justified. CC22 would have bypassed its own blocking via his ip address. So 128.175.87.38=Chilicheese22. The three files on Commons exist since days there. --Panam2014 (talk) 00:52, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

@Panam2014: pinging me every time you post a comment is harassment. Stop it now please. Ivanvector (talk) 00:53, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
@Ivanvector My behavior on Commons has nothing to do. You said I would not notify you anymore, I would not do it anymore, but that does not bode my behavior here. --Panam2014 (talk) 01:14, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

Can you please stop lying. He just said a checkuser can't connect me and the IP, but he is going out on a limb to say that we are connected. So it's just an assumption. Chilicheese22 (talk) 01:08, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

@Chilicheese22: You're ridiculous, it's dull. Your game was once again unmasked. The administrator said you were the same person as the iP.--Panam2014 (talk) 01:14, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
It seems very likely based on behavior, but I can't prove it. I don't think there's any point in arguing about it. Guanaco (talk) 01:17, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
@Panam2014: He say's and I quote "Checkusers can't link an account to an IP for privacy reasons, but It looks like a duck to me." so he is just assuming, and your other sockpuppet was declined as baseless. Therefore it shows what type of alternate reality that you live in. You can stay in the alternate reality, for all I care because, unlike you I am not trying to get blocked here. As for @Guanaco: there is no reason to add fuel to his propaganda, when you just can't prove such actions Chilicheese22 (talk) 01:22, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
@Chilicheese22: stop now, It seems very likely based on behavior. I am not idiot. Your are the iP. The duck is officialy positive. You should be stopped. Enough is enough. --Panam2014 (talk) 01:24, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
  • I'm pretty much done with this particular image and dispute, but if you don't mind @GreenMeansGo and Jeff G.: help me understand the rationale for keeping three versions of the same map, just in case I encounter this sort of issue again. Is it normal practice to keep a vector and several raster versions of the same map, even if the information presented differs between them? Ivanvector (talk) 15:03, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
    • @Ivanvector: The existence of the raster images appears at present to promote peace on Commons; if it does not do so on other projects, we may need a more balanced response. cc22 could learn inkscape (so could I, but I don't advertise that). Our SVG images should not be wrapped raster images. Edit warring and incivility should not be tolerated.   — Jeff G. ツ 15:26, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
Sure, I can buy that having a raster and vector copy of the same map eases disputes and is probably harmless. I don't understand why it's accepted practice to do this when the maps are not the same, though. Compare the svg and jpg versions of this map, for example: the difference between the two seems to be promoting an edit war, not easing it. Ivanvector (talk) 15:34, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
Umm... the heuristic I kindof go by when it comes to Commons deletion criteria is more or less... if someone could conceivably use it educationally some time in the next several hundred years, then it should probably be kept. Most images are unused anyway, and the point is more building the media version of a seed bank. If things end up going unused, then it's not like it's taking up valuable limited space anyway. Whether the content of that image is verifiable for immediate use on en.wiki is kindof out of the scope of the seed bank to worry about. (But I mostly quietly tinker around in the background anyway. So don't make the mistake of thinking my opinion is somehow important.) GMGtalk 15:41, 22 December 2017 (UTC)

This must be the new sock (after sock IlionMusicSchool- see [8]) of the indefinetly blocked AntonyFragakis. User GeorgiaStauropoulou uploaded this image (AF Ilion Music School.jpg) of Antony Fragakis (the real person), which was placed at Fragakis user page in the Greek-language WP by an IP (user AntonyFragakis is blocked for three months there). The name "Georgia Stauropoulou" is very similar with the name "George Stathopoulos", a fictional user of flickr, created by Anthony Fragakis for licence laundring in Greek-language WP. Blocked user returns with a new account but also with blockable behavior

A blocked user has returned with a new account but also with blockable behavior. The new account is Kgw1226 and the original account is Kim geonwoo. As shown at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=block&user=&page=Kim+geonwoo&year=&month=-1&tagfilter=&hide_thanks_log=1&hide_patrol_log=1&hide_tag_log=1 the original account was blocked for unfree image uploading, and the new account has probably done this too as discussed at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Lei Jun.jpg. I believe that the two accounts are the same, firstly because I think Kgw means Kim geonwoo but also because the remaining uploads of the original account as shown at Special:ListFiles/Kim_geonwoo look similar to the photos uploaded at the new account as shown at Special:ListFiles/Kgw1226. What looks to be a self admission albeit in Korean is visible at Revision of User talk:Kim geonwoo --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 16:20, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Wuestenigel (talk · contributions · Move log · block log · uploads · Abuse filter log

This is a User with more than 10.000 files shot by his own and uploaded on Commons via flickr2commons.

He doesn't use a description nor categories for these files, and - what's most important - has uploaded many copyvios like logos, comic and lego characters, designed packages, craftswork and so on.

He acts like this since 2014 and therefore received several warnings on his user talk page. Since now he never answered or changed his behaviour.

On 16th November I wrote him as an Admin and requested that he should speedy delete all his copyvios. He answered, that he won't upload copyvios in the future and deleted ~ 29 files, all clear copyvios (so he knows, what is my concern).

On 21st November he uploaded the next copyvios, f.i. File:Kind findet den verloren gegangenen Ball (38397556906).jpg.

On 23rd November I gave him a final warning and time for one week to clean up his stock of files. He just answered and did nothing. --Emha (talk) 14:51, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi Emha,

you wrote me and I replied. I also took action and deleted a lot of pictures. The lego pic you mentioning was just a mistake. Mistakes happen.

As you can see here (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Zidanie5) I also take care that really a lot of images are being adjusted just right now.

--Wuestenigel (talk) 14:54, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

That is not you who is placing categories in some of your files. --Superbass (talk) 20:24, 30 November 2017 (UTC)
Indeed, that is me. He asked me to help him sort things out adding cats to his uploads, since he is not a proficient user at these sort of things. So I believe he means to do right but is misguided and needs time to do so (but COI so disregard this).--Zidanie5 (talk) 08:45, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
The question is: why does a "not proficient user" upload > 10.000 files with really bad metadata (categories are obligatory!) and leaving them completely alone afterwards? There happened many "mistakes" since 2014 and no responses. --Emha (talk) 10:06, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
The problem isn't solved, as you can see on the several new sectors on his talkpage since the starting of this request. --Emha (talk) 09:43, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
...And if User:Wuestenigel adds categories they're crap e.g.. Those files uploaded without any description nor proper categorization are actually worthless for this project. --Jotzet (talk) 18:27, 18 December 2017 (UTC)

In the German-speaking Wikipedia it has now been announced for the first time that the user has sent a high invoice for an alleged license violation during subsequent use. I'm assuming this is where the point of his mass uploads lies. --Superbass (talk) 18:29, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

Ralf, warum nimmst Du ihn in Schutz? --Emha (talk) 11:42, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

Many of them are of questionable value in regard to the scope of this project (examples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). Nothing has been done by you since nearly two months. Can we still expect you to cleanup this mess? --AFBorchert (talk) 17:53, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

Summary:

  • User does mass-uploads of uncategorized and undescribed files via Flickr
  • Among them many photos out of scope of this projet, stock photography
  • Among them many photos of copyrighted material that had (and still has) to be deleted
  • He does not really and sustainably react to attempts to communicate on the above three points
  • He runs a search engine for copyright violations ("We hunt for you", "Make some extra Money")
  • He or a farm of sockpuppets (checkusered and blocked in en:wp, blocked in de:wp) spreads pictures across many language-versions of wikipedia. Few useful, many removed by article authors for picture spam.
  • He finally has begun to charge subsequent users for minor license violations. At least one case is known. Guess how many are still to come.

--> Apparently, the user abuses our project as a cost trap by uploading a high number of images without description and categories, putting them in articles or having them put by others to create many (among them some incorrect) uses outside the project with the intention of earning money. All legal, but without concordance with the ideals of this project --Superbass (talk) 22:56, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

Full protection for File:The British Empire.png

This map is used as the lead image on WP's featured article on the British Empire. Over the last month two users - Maphobbyist and Brythones - have been adding countries (e.g. the whole of Antarctica, Afghanistan) which were not part of the British Empire. This has caused confusion among readers of the WP article, leading to a protracted argument over sourcing. This could have been avoided. I propose that this map be locked in the stable state it was left in by its original author, the Red Hat of Pat Ferrick, who was quite meticulous about use of sources (as evidenced by his spirited defence of the map here [15]). Wiki-Ed (talk) 20:26, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

Done Semi-protected for one year. Yann (talk) 14:25, 1 February 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for doing this, but you only semi-protected it. It was vandalised again at 09.25 by an auto-confirmed user. Would it be possible to fully lock it on this version [16] by the original author. I am confident that this most accurately reflects the sources cited. Many thanks. Wiki-Ed (talk) 21:05, 1 February 2018 (UTC)
No, the latest update [17] reflects an accurate version of all the territories that were ruled by the United Kingdom, which includes every form of British administration, no matter how brief, be it crown colonies, crown dependencies, protectorates, mandates, military administrations, etc. Examples include en:British Military Administration (Libya), en:Italian Somaliland#British Military Administration (1941-1949). Furthermore, the country is officially known as the "United Kingdom (of Great Britain and Northern Ireland)", not as Britain which is a geographical designation for the island of Britain and an informal name for the United Kingdom (which should be avoided in maps). Maphobbyist (talk) 23:27, 1 February 2018 (UTC)
For a file to be permissable on Wikipedia it must be verifiable, that is, draw on reliable sources for each and every claim. Your assertions are not supported by the sources. Historians do not treat post-war Germany, Libya, Afghanistan or vast swathes of Antartica as part of the British Empire. That is original research. And your choice of title is not accurate for the vast majority of the period in question. If you want to make a separate map which reflects your fantasy interpretation and naming conventions then by all means go ahead, but don't pollute Wikipedia with it. Wiki-Ed (talk) 19:18, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
The changes in the map are according to verified sources, which User:Brythones and I have shown. They are not original research or fantasy interpretations. You have even erased in this map crown dependencies which are under U.K. administration for centuries, such as the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey. And again the country's correct name is the "United Kingdom (of Great Britain and Northern Ireland)". The name "Britain" is colloquial, just like the name "America" for the United States of America, and must be avoided in maps. Maphobbyist (talk) 22:23, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
What sources did you add? Most of them look like the ones that were inserted by the original author. Which of the cited sources says Antartica was part of the British Empire? Or Afghanistan? The Crown Dependencies? What page? The name of the country was NOT the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in 1497, 1597, 1697, 1797 or 1897. If you are unfamiliar with how to use reliable sources, don't know your history, or understand contentious naming issues - particularly in relation to Ireland - then maybe you shouldn't be editing maps on this subject. Wiki-Ed (talk) 23:02, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
The British have claimed parts of Antarctica for a number of years, the en:Ross Dependency and en:Australian Antarctic Territory were claimed by the British through their claims in en:Victoria Land and en:Enderby Land long before the independence of Australia and New Zealand. Ireland broke away from the Empire in 1931, while the United Kingdom remained a single unitary state in the Empire: the most contemporary definition of the territory is the most appropriate in this case. The en:Crown Dependencies remain under British sovereignty today. This is already sourced in the image!!! Couldn't comment on Afghanistan though. Brythones (talk) 01:35, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
Again, you are applying your interpretation. 2+2 does not equal 5. Unless the consensus view of reliable sources state explicitly that they were part of the British Empire then we cannot include them. As for the title, most readers would expect it to reflect the name that applied for the longest period, not the one that was only relevant for the last one tenth. In case you've missed it, this map was created to illustrate a specific article on Wikipedia. It follows the standards and the consensus view achieved for that article which, just to remind you, is featured. If you want to challenge any of these issues then the correct place to do so is on the talk page for that article.
I see this has been locked in the right place, so no need to continue this discussion here. Wiki-Ed (talk) 09:36, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

@Wiki-Ed remember: edit warring over a honest disagreement is not vandalism. Cease to use inappropriate accusations to further your point. I wonder how didn’t you ever blocked in en.Wikipedia for such an attitude. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 09:54, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

I don't know whether Wikimedia has different rules to Wikipedia - I'm guessing not since you linked a WP policy page. If so then you may wish to try reading that page in full before getting on your high horse. Gaming the system to circumvent Wikipedia's core policies is considered vandalism. In this case using the lack of scrutiny on this site to ignore the verifiability requirement for Wikipedia articles, pretending sources are being cited when they are not, and/or making exceptional claims without providing sufficient sourcing. There was an extensive debate over this on Wikipedia all because these two editors were messing around adding random countries; took a while to spot where the problem was because WP doesn't notify when Wikimedia source files are edited. Making incorrect edits the first time might be an accident, but doing so repeatedly and in defiance of long established project rules is not. Wiki-Ed (talk) 19:56, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

There should be zero need to keep uploading competing versions over one another. There are (at least) two different ways of displaying the British Empire - those expressed by the two parties in this dispute; both of those or just one (or neither!) may be valid, and its an editorial decision which is preferred. Commons:Overwriting existing files applies here - do not upload over the other version, just upload the other map to a different location. It then becomes a much easier task to make the editorial decision on which to use on Wikipedia.--Nilfanion (talk) 15:02, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

I think that's the point I was trying to make - I completely agree that there could be two versions: one that complies with Wikipedia policy requirements and one (in fact there are quite a lot already) which does not. However, the Wikipedia article on the British Empire requires a map that complies with the stringent demands of a featured article in terms of sourcing. We don't have an "editorial choice" when there are fundamental principles involved (verifiability). We have no problem whatsoever if they want to fork off and make their own map, but they should leave this one alone. Wiki-Ed (talk) 19:56, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
Wikipedia does have that editorial choice if the two maps are available. With one map, there is zero choice. To decide which to use, the WP community can use its judgement to assess the options against its core criteria like venerability. Any options that fail those criteria shouldn't be used on Wikipedia, but that's something for community on WP. It has nothing to do with Commons. Commons would only care if one is egregiously wrong, like showing Mongolia as part of the empire, but not Canada, which would be a matter for a deletion request..--Nilfanion (talk) 20:35, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
Yes, that's the point. There are lots of maps with egregious errors. This was the only one that tightly complied with WP policy. By adding errors these two editors removed the choice - we could pick wrong or wrong - and it forced the WP community into a protracted and needless debate. Wiki-Ed (talk) 22:25, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
I have uploaded a new map with a firmly established title and summary, and which is backed up by links, so that it cannot be narrowed down like File:The British Empire.png on which it is based. The new File:The British Empire (including Crown Dependencies, Crown Colonies-Overseas Territories, Protectorates, Military Administrations).png is based on the broad definition of the "British Empire" and includes Crown Dependencies, Crown Colonies, British Protectorates, British Mandates and British Military Administrations. I included sourced information based on the broader definition of the "British Empire" when particularly British Military Administrations are also included. While this new map includes a broader definition, the original maps includes a narrower definition. So they don't need to clash and they provide alternative definitions of the "British Empire". In the end, neither map is unsourced fantasy-based original research, as they are both linked and are sourced. I hope this other user does not contest this map. Please feel free to edit, if there are missing areas and corrections need to be made, with verifiable sources and links, as long as it is not narrowed down like the original map.
There are issues that cannot be ignored in File:The British Empire.png and definitely need to be addressed: The Crown Dependencies which are the oldest type of British administration since the Middle Ages of the then Kingdom of England, are very much part of it, and they still are under British sovereignty. Yet, they have been left out from this map. Another problem is the definition of Britain which is misleadingly and colloquially used as the name for the current United Kingdom as a whole, because it is the geographical name of only the island of Britain and not the United Kingdom as a whole - and Northern Ireland which is part of the United Kingdom has been totally left out. When the first colonies were established in the early 1600s, the country's official name was the "Kingdom of England" which included England and Wales. With the Acts of Union 1707 of the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland, the country's official name became the "Kingdom of Great Britain". With the Acts of Union 1800 of the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland, the country's official name became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland which continued until the secession of most of Ireland in 1922, which resulted in the current official name of the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". The Crown Dependencies and the historical official names of the current United Kingdom need to be included in this map for these reasons. Maphobbyist (talk) 22:27, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

Hello

I have received many messages regarding copyright violations for pictures I am uploading. I have been in contact with another administrator and was instructed the other evening to upload the photos again so they could see exactly what I wanted to do, the pictures I want to use for a Wikipedia page, and how we can get everything accomplished without violating any copyright laws. With that being said, the photos I am attempting to upload, I have full 100% permission to use (I do have a valid photo release that I have sent to the administrator I am working with).

I offer my sincere apologies because I do not want to violate any copyright laws, and I have gone through the steps to ensure this does not happen. As I said before, the photos I have uploaded, I have 100% full permission from its owner to use and have been trying to resolve this issue for almost 2 months now.

  • While I agree the user's conduct has been quite uncivil lately (and I note that the user has been previously blocked for edit warring and re-uploading deleted materials), I respectfully ask that some leeway be granted here, at least temporarily. I am presently engaged with the user regarding their claim to "commissioned" artwork, which bears on at least one current deletion discussion, and silencing Falconfly hinders this, and could create more headaches down the road. I'd prefer to try a carrot-not-stick approach first. Animalparty (talk) 04:01, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

Already linked to, which I will link again to demonstrate how petty this is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Falconfly (talk • contribs) 21:43, 6 February 2018 (UTC)
@Falconfly: the problem is that an artist's statement like "this is a commission for Falconfly" is too vague to evaluate copyright ownership. Even a statement from the artist saying "I agree to allow my work on Wikipedia" is insufficient. As I've told you before, the best way to go about all of your commissions (including those that have already been deleted) is to have the artist deal directly with OTRS, regardless of any contract you may have worked out with the artist. And aside from that, yes, your behavior here is unacceptable. You can be frustrated, but so far appear unwilling to calmly address the issues, and resort to slinging profanities at people. Previously blocked sockpuppets:

LX (talk, contribs) 20:26, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

@LX: do you know whose sock Dwaynep2008 was? And don’t subst link-generating templates please – it is not only silly but rude to those who look at wikitext afterwards. It is confusing more than your English grammar. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 20:31, 8 February 2018 (UTC)
Incnis Mrsi: As far as I can tell, Dwaynep2008 is the original account. Unsubsted the templates; I didn't realise that particular template would dump quite that amount of code. I'm not sure what you want me to do about the grammar, but perhaps we can focus on the problem at hand instead? LX (talk, contribs) 20:44, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

Good catch. That's definitely another sock. Poundsdwayne47 (talk contribs Luxo's SUL deleted contribs logs block user block log ) doesn't have any activity, but given that it's the same name as the user's Flickr account name, it's pretty obvious as well. Could the protection of this page please be reduced from sysop-only please?

Reguyla has a WMF lock, however it is not "normal" for associated user talk pages to be left forever as sysop-only edits. As a result no non-sysop created DR messages or other notifications get seen by anyone. -- (talk) 19:58, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

From the log I see that "prevent IP/sock disruption" was the rationale for this protection. --Túrelio (talk) 20:33, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
@Túrelio: throw-away socks and IPs will not pass through autoconfirmed-level protection, whereas more long-lived socks will unlikely be directed by their masters to make provocations here due to expenses. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 20:45, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
Question, Fae, does the protection prevent a successful DR? Artix Kreiger (talk)
@Artix Kreiger: it does not hinder delreqs at all. It only disrupts accountability for this account which has considerable number of uploads. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 20:51, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
Reguyla was on my talk page maintenance list, agreed a long time ago, now locked out. I have not tested the standard DR tool, but presumably non-sysops will be stuck when they want to amend or use other notice tools. -- (talk) 21:03, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

I need help. A few weeks ago, I was forwarded a specification sheet from the Embassy of Mauritania to update their national flag after an August referendum. The user is not allowed to reupload deleted files, period. If there is a valid OTRS permission, then the OTRS agent will take care of undeletion. Please have a look at the File:Visa policy of Australia.png. I have tried to discuss with this user that his new upload is full of errors (started with very obvious spelling mistakes) but it does not seem to be getting anywhere, he keeps reuploading. I don't see it as my or anyone else's duty to correct those errors or even list them since the current file is perfectly fine. This user has a history of belligerent behavior leading to blocks both here and on Wikipedia, and more notoriously complete disregard for any attempts to engage in discussion.   Oppose. The 3 uploads, which have recently been deleted, were obviously good-faith uploads, as the uploader mentioned the photographer of each image in the description. He did, however, not provide a permission to OTRS, which is why the images were deleted. Uploading without providing a valid permission was wrong, but is not a blockable offense, as he did not repeat this behaviour after being warned. I have now explained to the user in detail what he has to take into account in such photos.--Túrelio (talk) 11:04, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
Two hours ago I realized that the three unlawfully uploaded files, all of them depicting uniformed children, have already been reused even outside Wikipedia: there are still traces left. I hope that none of the parents or grown-up children files a lawsuit because the community symbolized by those uniforms (KPE) had been qualified as anti-Semitic by Roman-Catholic Church, renowned German scientists and even a court rule in Vienna. The uploaded photos aren't just unlicensed but also highly compromising and can spoil the children's future if they keep spreading. @ sysops: Please take this into account if you decide what to do about this issue. Regards, Agathenon (talk) 05:27, 23 February 2018 (UTC)
Moreover I inform you that the copyright violations committed by ScreenshotAdverasul (talk · contribs) were related to the same KPE topic; I can't exclude that this user is a sockpuppet used in the same conflict of interest, compare this open CU request on German Wikipedia. So I've made the blocks based on strong behavior evidence (utilizing also the IP's crosswiki edits), however, the only real violation of the sockpuppetry policy is "Contributing to the same page or discussion with multiple accounts" considering there is no disruption. I'd take this to SPI. ~riley (talk) 22:24, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

Joymaster

The user talk page User_talk:Joymaster is for a deceased contributor, and was indef protected as sysop edit only in 2010. There is no policy for sysop-only protection in these circumstances, and considering there have been DR notices since 2010, this seems to be counter productive as well as highly unusual. Request unprotection. @Odder: as acting sysop. -- (talk) 09:18, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

Hmm, as he is deceased, any problem-messages on his talkpage are rather meaningless IMO. --Túrelio (talk) 10:25, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
@Túrelio: Allowing such messages allows automated systems to continue functioning. "No, you can't nominate all the files in this category for deletion because one of the uploaders is dead" is really bad consequence of really bad design. Please just unprotect and autoarchive that user talk page and others similarly situated, or modify all the automatic tools to ignore protected user talk pages.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 10:32, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
I have asked for such modification to automatic tools at MediaWiki talk:Gadget-QuickDelete.js#Protected user talk pages, MediaWiki talk:Gadget-AjaxQuickDelete.js#Protected user talk pages, and MediaWiki talk:VisualFileChange.js#Fully protected user talk pages.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 12:00, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
Talk pages are not frozen when users stop contributing, and they should remain available to discuss issues with the user account or past contributions. We have no idea if other inactive accounts are inactive permanently. Again, sysop only protection is not agreed by consensus, nor supported by policy. -- (talk) 12:46, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
@: This was a remnant of an unwritten policy that operated on the Polish Wikipedia at that time (2010) where they protected the user page and the user talk page of contributors who were confirmed to have passed away. If it bothers people, I can of course unprotect Joymaster's talk page, however I agree with Colin that it's not a right solution to the problem; I second his idea to set-up a central page that could be watched by other users for messages which failed to post to a protected page. Also, I feel uncomfortable seeing the talk page of a deceased contributor full of automated deletion notices when it's clear they won't be able to respond to any of them; I think it can give a really bad impression to passers-by. odder (talk) 13:06, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
This is not the correct fix to the problem. It's like saying "Can we have wider roads please because the steering is broken in my car". It seems quite sensible to protect such a page to avoid it being abused with nobody watchlisting it. The tool that does the processing for page deletions clearly needs fixed so that adding a message to a protected user page does not make it break. Perhaps in that case such messages could be added to some central page that admins/other-interested-people could watchlist. Alternatively, we could invent some template that indicates another user's talk page who has volunteered to take ownership of file-deletion issues on their behalf. The problem is with the deletion process, not with the principle of freezing the talk page of a dead user. -- Colin (talk) 11:33, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
+1. Yann (talk) 17:31, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
Russavia is also somehow like dead, but his userpage is not sysop-only-protected. The userpage is full of image deletion notices and he generally does not answer. Joymaster is dead in real life – is it important difference? (This problem is not important for me, do as you like.) Taivo (talk) 20:19, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
Taivo I'm guessing somebody asked for Russavia's page to be unlocked and offered to watch list it. Can't possibly think who that might have been :-) The concern, that someone might vandalise or abuse the talk page, with nobody to notice, is very unlikely with Russavia's page. -- Colin (talk) 07:35, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

@Wcam: blocking is a measure of prevention, not punishment. Do you currently see a multiple-copyvio upload or blatant unresponsiveness? It is all about one File:Zenfone 5 front.svg, I guess. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 13:49, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
This user has been re-uploading this specific image multiple times in spite of speedy deletions, and removed the warning messages repeatedly so it's not that the user did not see them, so I think blocking is necessary since the user's behavior does not indicate a cooperative intention. --Wcam (talk) 16:24, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
@Wcam: do you speak really of reuploading? Then this number has a specific designation in English, and it doesn’t read “multiple”, “many”, “numerous”, “several” or anything like. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 16:29, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
@Incnis Mrsi: Please stop assuming that I do not understand what the number 1 means and check this image's upload log for yourself and it really is reuploading. Hi, What admin action is requested here? Regards, Yann (talk) 10:10, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
Low-level protection of the file. Socks tried twice to put it under a wrongful speedy deletion. I have no idea why elimination of this file is that important for the farm operator, but it likely is. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 10:15, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
IMO, it should be deleted after importing the SVG version, not protected. Regards, Yann (talk) 11:35, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
This PNG has subtle differences from the SVG version in placement of the “Gaz Métro” inscription. Moreover, it was uploaded earlier than en.Wikipedia’s SVG version. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 16:02, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
A related file happened to be on my watchlist: File:Gaz Métro logo.jpg; I noticed it being deleted a couple of days ago as a duplicate. At the time I thought it somewhat odd because from my visual memory of the page I had the impression it was higher in resolution than the replacement, File:Gaz Métro logo.png, but by then I had no means of doing a ‘reality check’.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:26, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
