I have blocked on the spot Awesomedubey (talk · contribs), for uploading 2 blatant copyvios File:Susanfoster 01.jpg and File:Susanfoster 02.jpg (both also re-uploads of previously deleted copyvios) and 1 likely copyvio File:Susanfoster 03.jpg under the name of admin-colleague User:Yann in an obvious attempt to smear him as a copyvio-uploader. All earlier uploads of this user were also copyvios. For this behaviour, I've blocked the account indef. Other opinions? --Túrelio (talk) 07:56, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

@Túrelio and Jon Kolbert: Judging by the previous uploads and history at en:Susan Foster, I don't think this is a troll or smear, but rather a cheap attempt to sneak these copyvios in. In any case, this deceptive behavior is worthy of an indef block.

  On hold I've left him a message explaining some of the issues. He has many edits at Sindhi Wikipedia, and we don't have Sindhi translations of COM:L and other policy pages, so there may be a language barrier, although he does know at least some English. Could someone please protect the non-existing Category:Sockpuppets of Jeff G. from being created again? Liza Veniza (or a copy-cat) made it twice, once in May and once today. @廣九直通車: He disputed the speedy deletion on the file talk pages, saying in Japanese that he took the photos with his iPhone. Clearly he doesn't understand the problem. In my opinion, this name doesn't look official, and such a name could be used by any proud Huron alumnus. User:Huron University College would be block-worthy. On Commons, we don't have a NPOV policy, so we're less concerned with promotional usernames and conflicts of interest in general. Verification is only needed if it's to prove that someone is or represents a copyright holder, or if someone might be claiming to be some notable person/organization.   • Comment: This ANB might be as a result of my asking about a file uploaded by Fhsig13 at COM:VPC#File:RCSD Patch.jpg. While I have had disagreements over image licensing in the past and do think Fhsig13 claims “own work” when he probably shouldn’t, in all fairness, File:RCSD Patch.jpg was uploaded back in December 2017 before any blocks/warnings about copvios were given. So, the RCSD patch is just an older uploaded which went unnoticed until now; it’s not a recently uploaded copyvio after being warned about such things. As for the other files just DR’d by Jeff G., those are recent uploads, but they’re still being discussed. Maybe an admin should wait until the DR closes before taking any action here, unless there’s a real need for something to be done right now. Despite this warning, you uploaded subsequently uploaded a number of other files (for example, File:Metropolitan Riveters logo (NWHL).png and File:Buffalo Beauts logo (NWHL).png) as {{PD-textlogo}} even though they seem way too complex to be below the threshold of originality for their respective countries of origin. You do understand that Commons doesn't accept fair use files, right? * Like I said, I uploaded the others logos based on this one File:Logo Toronto Furies 2016.png, wich was uploaded by an other user. In my opinion, this was a complex logo but this is considered like a simple logo so I took example on this user (visibly, that was a bad idea) and uploaded others logos from the same source with the same definition code that seemed right. I didn't spammed and I waited after this updated, and like this didn't created an other copyright problem, I assumed I've done alright this time. I thought that like it was a simplier reproduction of the original logo of the teams, it was the explication.
* This morning (I'm in GMT+1), I saw the notification of Majora for my recents uploads, and also for an old upload that Yann (previous user) didn't pointed like a violation at the time of the first warning. So I thought that was alright, but actually no and I'm even more confused on the simple and complex logo notion.
* So I would like to delete the two others logos remaining on my account (from march and april, but I don't want to received a late warning again) because I have no idea if I did the good thing or not. I'm struggling to understand the copyright rules and the learning process can't take any mistakes, so I will just stuck with the writing on Wikipedia which is more important for me. Your other two uploads are fine. They are PD-simple. The Toronto Furies one is debatable to be honest. If something is just text or simple geometric shapes it is fine. If there is artwork on it that is generally not fine. The Toronto logo is definitely a designed logo which is why it is debatable. The ones that got you a thread here were far far beyond that. I'd be ok with withdrawing my request with no action if you state that you understand the difference here between a simple, text based or simple shape based, and the logos that were deleted. Repeated spamming (warritimes.wordpress.com)

I don't know if this is the best place to report it, but over the past few days throwaway user accounts (the AFAIK latest one being Special:Contributions/Akpokojmad) and a considerable number of dynamic IPs in this range (MTN Nigeria) have added spam to the file description etc of existing images here for "warritimes.wordpress.com", a blog operated by a self-proclaimed "prophet" in Nigeria (sample edits: [7], [8]; also see my contributions for reverts I've made). The spamming and promotion for Ogedegbe has been going on for a long time on en-WP using a considerable number of socks (see en:wp:Sockpuppet investigations/Vwegba4real and en:Isaiah Ogedegbe), but has now moved to Commons, since the blog has been blacklisted on en-WP, new socks are blocked on sight there and the entire 197.210.0.0/16 range has also been given a very long block there. Yes. That does appear so. But the image was taken with their iPhone which means that the photographer is the copyright holder. Not them. And I doubt it was a work for hire either since no professional is going to use someone else's phone to take a photo. Based on the G+ photo I don't know how you could be so sure, but the image on Commons may have revealed more. I'm not saying it has to be a selfie, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it not being a selfie either. Even if it isn't though, it would be a kind of bystander selfie. We don't allow those, but if he actually is Clément Berlié it would also not be a straight up copyvio. We can't keep it, but I wouldn't consider it blockworthy either. A bit outside the topic, but relative to the comment made by Alexis, in case a non admin want to see a deleted file, then you can make a search for the exact name of the file with google image, example, the image is often kept in the google cache, in this case the image is likely the first of the list. As far as I know the image is this one and seems to have been deleted several times and seems to be credited to Sophie Prudent. Remains to know if it's a work for hire and if Prudent is "the official photographer of Clément Berlié".   Not done Comparing something that has 6511 transclusions to something that has 224,000+ is disingenuous at best. It is not about what admins are a "fan" of either. It is also not really about the "importance" of the template. That level of use is the definition of a widely used template. Full protection seems appropriate here. Holywinius seems to be yet another sockpuppet of the infamous LTA "Leandro Teles Rocha", who apparently was the one who previously denounced HolyGoo to Hedwig in Washington, misrepresenting a situation in wiki.pt in order to reinstate the ban here in Commons. I obviously condemn the way HolyGoo expressed himself here, ranting about nazi admins or whatever, because some file he wanted was not restored. But since then that episode has been widely abused by this LTA to troll the editor (who is from a rival political spectrum) - and now to troll myself. HolyGoo has some behavioral issues, which he recognizes himself, apparently related to some health problem he has. But he generally is an editor in good standing at wiki.pt (at least that's my perception). I would not oppose unblocking him here. I strongly suspect User:Buyerseve is a sockpuppet of User:Leftcry, who was a sockpuppet of User:WhyHellWhy, blocked for "Vandalism: POV-pushing with pro-russian agenda, purpose-created account for edit-warring". Leftcry was the first user to vandalise File:Same-sex_marriage_map_Europe_detailed.svg to reflect European borders according to the view of the Kremlin and some of its allies, namely by recognising the independence of Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Artsakh, Transnistria, and the Russian annexation of Crimea & Sevastopol. (Incidentally, North Cyprus is also recognised, even though only Turkey recognises it). I corrected the map to reflect the legal consensus within the international community about these territories; they de jure belong to Georgia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Ukraine and the Republic of Cyprus. Buyerseve undid my correction, saying the map should reflect the de facto legal situation. Because this is Buyerseve's only edit ever on any Wikimedia project, he has to be an SPA, and one who is particularly concerned with moving the borders in a pro-Russian view, just like WhyHellWhy, Leftcry and other WhyHellWhy sockpuppets before him.   1. Convert MP3 to another format which is acceptable on Commons. Here is the list of supported file types: Commons:File_types#Sound.
  2. Apply for extended-uploader right at Commons:Requests for rights#Extended uploader.

SQL queries to find templates and modules which are not protected and which are used on a lot of pages

Here are 2 queries: one for templates and one for modules which find pages with high number of uses or transclusions (over 500k) which are not fully protected. Some of the pages like i18n (internationalization) pages are meant to be edited by many people and semi-protection might be sufficient. Other pages should be protected. If you are an admin and you are interested in working on this (now and periodically in the future) please fork the queries and use them to guide you (I will do the same). --Jarekt (talk) 14:19, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

Policy on this has not changed. Sysop-edit-only protection is not a 'precautionary' measure when there is no evidence that locking out non-sysops from editing a template is either necessary or helpful.

Policy is unchanged, as we have always protected "heavily used images or frequently transcluded templates to prevent vandalism" as explained in Commons:Protection_policy#Full_protection policy. We are talking about very small fraction of templates and other pages, usually the top of Special:MostTranscludedPages list. We usually see templates with more than 100k uses being protected, so it is surprising to run into templates with couple million transclusions which are not protected. Indefinite block for User:Falk2

For reference, I just changed A.Savin's block of Falk2 from two weeks to indefinite. Falk2 was blocked for vandalism after this thread in the German Forum, because he removed categories from his own images as revenge during a conflict. Falk2 has always been problematic and had a bad temper, but as reaction to A.Savin's block, he posted a long rant which included the words "Im echten Leben würde ich Die eine kleben", translated "In real life I would hit you". Commons:Copyright rules by territory/[country]

Recently most of the different lists of copyright related information has been merged into respective, individual, pages. This is primarily being done by Aymatth2 after discussion on various talk pages and boards. The reason I bring it up here is that the original pages for some of these things, COM:FOP, COM:TOO, were all semi-protected indefinitely. While others, COM:CRT were not. What are people's opinions about carrying over semi-protection to these new pages? Seeing as these pages are used to decide the fate of countless images on a daily basis I wouldn't be against doing so under the "high risk" or "high traffic" categories but I wanted to get other's opinions on the matter. While I fully agree with the idea that Commons, like all projects, should be as open as possible my personal opinion on this specific matter is that these types of pages should be a tad more stable than the general page due to their intended use.   Not done Governmental works are protected by the copyright law in most countries. There are a few famous exceptions such as the federal government of the United States. Regarding Poland, according to Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory/Poland#Works_by_the_Government_and_Public_administration, governmental works (except "normative acts and drafts thereof as well as official documents, materials, signs and symbols") are protected by the copyright law. However, some ministries have started to publish their works under a free license of Creative Commons.

The uploads can be speedy deleted as intended to cause disruption. Waiting for full DRs to complete seems unnecessary. The uploader appears uninterested in giving an explanation for the copyright release, so these are likely copyvios. AGF is fine, but in the context of active disruption it is reasonable to require verification.
