@Pandakekok9 and Taivo: While I understand this is a highly visible image, I believe full upload protection is not warranted. There are several issues with the current SVG. Besides color (which I fixed), there are several visible deformities in the seal itself. This precludes the ability of a good-faith user to correct these mistakes in vectorization. To elaborate, I actually extracted a higher quality SVG from the EPA website, only to find that it's now impossible for me to upload it and thereby fix the issues with the current one. I feel as though I'm being punished for my earlier edit to fix the colors, as I do not think it was a coincidence that this protection request was lodged shortly afterwards.   Support lowering protection level. File is neither "heavily used across Wikimedia projects (e.g. template icons)", nor "used in a dangerous location (e.g. wiki's main pages)" (Commons:Protection_policy#Upload_protection). This situation is precisely why preemptive protection should be used with extreme caution. The letters especially in our 13-year old file are horribly vectorized, and Jadebenn should indeed be able to help fix this without jumping through beaurocratic hoops. @Taivo: Most of the uses seem to be through {{PD-USGov-EPA}}, though. For reasons of readability, I had already lodged an edit request to replace its use in that template with File:EPA logo.svg before this seal was upload protected. I don't see a problem with the username. It is obviously not related to an organisation and does not pretend to have any Wikimedia authority. However, the account does have a history of copyright infringements, so a short block may be warranted soon. (Continued from here.) I would like to bring to notice that most of his remaining uploads are still violating Commons policy. The user has invariably designated himself as the "author" of historic images (e.g.). However, the underlying template clearly informs us that " This field should not be used to specify the name of the person who is the scanner, finder, or uploader of the image – these things do not make that person the author!" Privacy violation

In a file there is serie of edits, beginning here with the name of a woman that's not on the photograph. The IP-user claims she is the richest woman in Europe (in German) for this edit and all the edits above. Can a moderator hide that? I already gave the user a warning.   Comment: I'm not sure if a COM:REVDEL is needed. I can't find anything confirming the information claimed by the IP, but that type of information is usually available online. This may mean the claims are not true (and that maybe this is a hoax). Unless I'm missing something, I think revision deletion is not needed. Ahmadtalk 13:54, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

IP harassed Bidgee by marking his files as copyvios even though they are not, and made a legal threat three times (at Bidgee's talk page, DR, another DR) against Bidgee and the community. Such user clearly doesn't belong here. @Taivo and 4nn1l2: I think I know now why the protection failed. Taivo semi-protected it on 08:02 yesterday, then 4 minutes later deleted the file for revdel (and restored it afterwards). The deletion must have erased the protection too. I still don't have any idea why the history shows that Taivo added 1132 bytes to the wikitext though. But protecting it again should work. And I won't be reporting this to Phabricator for now, as this seems intended (other than the mysterious 1132 bytes) pandakekok9 01:36, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

Images uploaded by socks

Don't know if this is the correct place. On English Wikipedia, I have run across File:Gloria Swanson parking lot.jpg, which was uploaded in 2012 by User:Candleabracadabra. That user is blocked on Englilsh Wikipedia as a confirmed sock of User:ChildofMidnight. Both the sockpuppet account and sock master account are here on Commons, but not active. In the eyes of the Commons community, they haven't abused their multiple accounts here as far as we know, so we wouldn't consider that sockpuppetry. And even if they had committed sockpuppetry, we had a recent RfC proposing to make sockpuppetry on its own a valid reason to delete a file from Commons, but it didn't gain enough consensus. So files uploaded by that user should be deleted only if they are out of project scope, have copyright problems, or the file itself violates any other policies (see our deletion policy). File:Gloria Swanson parking lot.jpg might be the second case, as there's no freedom of panorama in the United States for 2D works, so I'm going to nominate that image for deletion. @GreenComputer: If you inspect, you would see that there is a link back to the files, and you never know what abusers is about to do. So, I've edit protected the file. Username does not match organization exactly and in any case is generic enough that it is unlikely that a reasonable user will see the username User:Backgardens and be confused as to whether they represent the backgarden.org website. The world has many organizations with many names, only in the case of reasonably likely confusion should a username be disallowed without verification IMO. Let's be a bit more relaxed about usernames. If the account activity is not promotional, the user would have to have a glaringly obvious carpetbagging name (like RijksMuseumImages or SonyFotos) to be a problem. Massive copyvio ([8]). The user received his final warning in December 2018 ([9]), after two copyvio sprees had been identified ([10] [11]).

However, by then he had already changed his identity to Qiushufang (evidence: both users focused on Chinese arms and armour, their edits tie neatly in at places ([12], [13]) and I am not the first one who noticed the similarities ([14])). Qiushufang was finally blocked for massive copyvio in April 2020 and hundreds of his uploads which had been up for years had to be deleted ([15]).

That Yprpyqp/Qiushufang could carry on for so long and escape the notice of most users and admins demonstrates that the ability of Commons to prevent systematic copyright violations is overall rather limited despite assertions to the contrary (my suggestion to improve the whole image review process). Khatumo / Maakhir areas

There has been a long-running dispute across multiple-language wikipedias on whether to list disputed areas as part of Somaliland, Puntland, Khatumo, Maakhir or simply as Somalia. The consensus reached in this discussion (User_talk:Lasunncty#Faulty_map) is that disputed areas on this image and this image should be shown rather than plain. Unfortunately, it seems that the dispute, which is long-term on many wikiprojects (check the edit history of any town/city/province in said area), has transferred to Wikimedia commons with reverts/edit warring on both pages. As such, I ask for (at least) semi-protection for File:Somaliland Map1.svg and File:Somaliland location map.svg. The latter should be reverted back to its consensus version, and due to the inevitable protractive and perpetual nature of this dispute, the time span should be indefinite. Thank you. Difficult question. Map of current situation file:Somalia map states regions districts.svg looks more like current situation, so I would not revert the file. The editors of the map are established users, so semi-protection does not help and the file must be either fully protected or not protected at all. Protection of Philippine maps

It has come to my attention that sockpuppets have been overwriting images on Philippine maps. Currently there are 17 regions and 81 provinces, but these socks have been uploading maps that show 21-23 regions (depends on what day it is?) and more than 81 provinces. I've already asked for the files that they themselves uploaded to be deleted, but for these files, these were originally created by someone else and our used in a lot of pages elsewhere and has to be semi-protected; I've previously asked someone to block the socks as similar socks have been blocked before so that semi-protection should work once they attempt to vandalize again:

If I'm not mistaken, the last warning was issued on 15 June 2019, right? Judging by the upload log, they haven't uploaded anything since June 16, 2019. Although some of those files uploaded on June 16 appear to be problematic and have been deleted (e.g. File:PAX Prime 2012 IMG 0356 (7918963784).jpg), I don't think a block is needed, since it may not (and, most probably, will not) be preventative. This map is used as the lead image on WP's featured article on the British Empire. Over the last month a number of users have been changing countries around (e.g. Afghanistan, bits of the Carribbean). This has caused confusion among readers of the WP article, leading to a discussion on the article's accuracy[16]. This has happened before - the discussion is here[17] - and the file was protected for a time, but has since lapsed. I'd be grateful if the original version of this map is locked in the stable state it was left in by its original author, who was quite meticulous and whose work does not needs to be overwritten. @Slp1: I'm not a checkuser anymore (was inactive) so I can't check and be sure. But if its a sockpuppet of a user blocked here on Commons then account should be blocked (any admin can do that). I don't see any bad edits from the user after the warning. And as for the DR you linked to it is not the same photo as on en.wiki. @MGA73: You are exactly right it is not the same photo. His whole point was to delete the photo used in the enwiki articles so that he could insert the one he prefers on enwiki with less scrutiny. A variation of the strategy being used here with the overwriting of the Uddin picture (and others.) I don't know how you operate here, but on enwiki we can block if people obvious duck sockpuppets. I am not an admin here so can't do anything. I can file for checkuser if you want, but we are talking about an editor globally locked for crosswiki abuse so I don't know that just because they haven't done anything 'bad' since the warning is a reason not to block.....Slp1 (talk) 16:36, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

If you look at the evidence, you (or another admin) could confirm that this is another reincarnation of a globally locked abusive user. We block because of the ongoing abuse here and elsewhere elsewhere. Here is more evidence linking this to the main account. From the last 24 hours. I have just blocked yet another obvious sockpuppet on enwiki [20]. Yesterday at 08:56, Photobooth uploaded this picture to Commons. A picture was deleted leaving an article without a photo. Then PhotoBooth11 upload a free photo so the article again can have a photo. That looks like a good edit to me. Personally I do no feel like spending too much time finding a reason to block someone who does good edits. I think it's easier to wait and see if user makes bad edits again. No, there was already a photo in the article. It was switched it for one they liked better. That's fine if you don't want to act now. As you say maybe somebody else will. But it will be important that somebody checks each and every one of their edits, as this is a serial copyright violator along with everything else. I picked, at random, an upload from 11 days ago, [21]. The source and copyright info given is a complete fiction. The link goes nowhere and all the info is copied wholesale from older photo. It has been reverted for other reasons, but as I said you have on your hands a serial sockpuppeteer who has a long, long history of uploading copyright vios.       Half support I see move and upload rather in the responsibility for admins – as a template editor I would not decide for myself such an action. On the other hand, edit could also be allowed for autoconfirmeds? Edit can't do any harm.     @GreenMeansGo: No, I don't think so. Apparently, it has been updated to support TE-protection as well, but I don't actually know how it works. I just tried protecting File:Test.svg three times (for one minute, but still), and it always showed the same result: full protection. And I don't think a purge was required, since each protection also counts as an edit, and it should automatically purge the page. I don't know if and how the TE-protection template can be invoked, but I think it's possible to correct the text. A quick demo is here (compare). There are some problems with the demo (namely, it should have commas, and "can be uploaded only by..." is confusing), but I just mean to say it's possible. While we're at it, it might be a good idea to add the expiration date as well (I added it to the sandbox, but there might be some tweaks needed here as well). You can test it on any protected file (just transclude the template on a protected file page and see the preview, saving the edit is not needed). Ahmadtalk 15:42, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

    @GreenMeansGo: Hmm... Can you please explain what the problem is? I don't mean the technical details, just what you see. Note that it won't show TE-protection padlock, it should just say "can be (edited) moved uploaded only by administrators". But if you see something else, can you please explain the problem briefly?
    And, as for the TE padlock, it's a bit complicated. There are different ways to do it; we can either choose the protection against one specific action (e.g. edit/upload) and show the protection message accordingly, therefore ignore any other possible protection level. Alternatively, we can show different messages (for example, one will say only template editors can edit it, and the other will say only admins can move/re-upload it), but that can get a bit messy, especially because the protection messages aren't really short. One other solution is to merge them all in one message, the text will be like "This page is currently protected, and can be edited only by template editors, moved only by administrators, and re-uploaded only by administrators", but then we'll have to choose one specific padlock icon to show.     @Ahmad252: The current template on the file description says it may only be edited by administrators. To my mind it should default to the lowest level and say it can only be edited by TE. It's kindof presumed that administrators can edit anything at any lower level of protection. However, it also says this in the banner when I click to edit the description, even though it contradicts the log entry directly below it. I would guess that we can probably skip trying to specify all the protection settings. For example, I would presume that most file movers would know how to check the page logs. @GreenMeansGo: I appreciate it (I'd of course appreciate it if it was criticism, too!) :-) I agree with a link to the log. However, I'm a bit too sensitive about the details, so I made a new version of {{Protectedpagetext/sandbox}} (thanks to {{Ifor}} from enwiki). This version understands all types of protections, but only returns the template for the lowest protection level. The only exception is when the page is not protected against one action but is protected against another, in which case it'll show the template for the lowest protected level instead of showing nothing at all (of course, it is possible to make it disappear, but I think this way it can be of more use). If we're going to use this version, I think we should also change the messages so that they will be accurate (more or less like this), and if not, we can indeed go with just one specific action (though I personally prefer the former). I'm also not sure if we should reflect the protection expiry date in the message or not, since we want to provide a link to the protection log. Ahmadtalk 22:22, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

One must differ from what a warning is, and what a threat is. Since the article was messed up and writers, and fans, and press officer, and pics were deleted, blocked, we warned that the article could be deleted from Google, since her image is damaged and we were all blocked for no reason, except to try to upload the pics we choose and put them in the place we decide. Socking from Deco Gedeon and Babiloniamay be, because is the same office and maybe tha same IP address. But 'fcsimonenaveia' was blocked because it tried to display a picture with the following: "Whe Simone opens her arms on the stage no one is more powerfull on MPB." A very famous phrase abt her, that was deleted at least three times for no reason! And the fcsimonenaveia finally blocked.
A very good example of how we´ve been treated is yesterday´s block against me, I deleted the pics (since our discussion here was OK), but he again reverted, than I posted the link of our discussion and Paulo Simões ignored, and finally blocked me. So, if we here discussed and agreed the pics are not authorized, why should I be blocked when I took the article with the pics away? The agreemnt here was not respect by Paulo and he blocked me because of that!

I would like to request that the user Mikamoto~ruwiki be blocked from editing or uploading images, because, he has been uploading copyrighted images, and will be keep uploading more of those images. The matter was raised here before but got archived without any admin apport to it (at the same time several admins were busy pillorying Tm for comparatively lesser offenses, if any), but the matter remains unresolved and the user in question is not only left not admin-warned about their conduct but also with the impression they’re in the right, due to the admin-ignored complaint by Evrik. To be clear: This user

  • has been ignoring COM:OVERWRITE across many, highly reused files,
  • refuses to upload the new images anew instead of overwriting,
  • insists on the legitimacy of this course of action,
  • confirms that this has been their usual practice for years,
  • and seems to be one among several users doing so.

This needs admin-sponsored analysis that may lead to massive file clean-up (with reversions and new uploads), warning and guidance of the envolved editors, and even maybe some cross-project outreach concerning editorial practices affecting Commons file reuse. -- Tuválkin ✉ ✇ 00:58, 11 October 2020 (UTC)

  • I haven't been following this before I saw this thread go up, but reading through the previous thread, the initial thread, and User talk:MaxxL was pretty shocking. For some examples of what this editor and their friends are doing, look at the histories of File:Wappen von Roetgen.png and File:AUT Groß-Enzersdorf COA.jpg. They're redrawing coats of arms from scratch as vectors (not inherently bad) and then uploading them as new versions across many, many highly used files in a complete disregard for Commons:Overwriting existing files. When someone reverts these changes citing the fact that the new versions are often completely different designs with completely different color schemes than the versions that were overwritten, they're quickly reverted with a statement that the new file is the "official version" and that any complaints must be taken to the "Coat of Arms Workshop" on dewiki instead of Commons. When multiple Commons editors asked them to stop, they threatened to report them as vandals. The work they're doing is fine, vectorizing images is very useful to the community, but it's not fine to upload these new files by overwriting already existing and established files against policy, mandate that issues with what they're doing on Commons be brought up on a separate wiki, and then threaten other editors who ask them to stop violating established policy. Some sort of administrative action should be taken here, or at the very least a comment as to why this isn't considered a violation of Commons:Overwriting existing files, since it certainly seems to be one from what I'm seeing. Users stealing Japanese train photographs from twitter

Incessant copyvio issues, it is probably the work of a sockpuppet. At least last few years, there is an ongoing plagiarisms from Japanese train photographs uploaded to twitter, and victims by identity thieves like a Commons:Deletion requests/impersonation of つだぬまどうぶつえん. I think they should be blocked per Copyright violations and Abusing multiple accounts.--Categorizing (talk) 13:18, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

Commons/enwiki cross-wiki socking

Hope this is the right noticeboard. Just a heads-up that Safi Bhatti, blocked both here and on enwiki, has been found to be socking. One of their two named socks, Mohananad Bhatti, has edited here, but not caused any disruption. However, I'll note that under the latter account they did upload w:File:Wikipedia-website.png, which shows they've bookmarked User:BevinKacon's Commons userpage, which is at the very least bizarre, and at most rather troubling. (I'll tag that file for CSD in a bit, but holding off so y'all can see.)

Block for sockpuppet

Daripulauriau25 (talk · contribs) was reported as a sockpuppet of FishMara on enwiki (w:en:Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/FishMara). The timings between when this user uploaded the image and when it was added 12 hours later to the now deleted draft by an account which had made no edits since September (w:en:User:Phyu Aung Myint - no local commons account) suspicious. I would have blocked this user on enwiki if they had a local account, as the timings are suspiciously close.

Why I'm reporting the account for a block on commons is because a number of the accounts CU confirmed to FishMara on enwiki in October 2019, were blocked and confirmed here too (see Category:Sockpuppets of Carsson Tan). Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 23:04, 22 October 2020 (UTC)

  Not done Semi-protection wouldn't prevent upload-warring, as (auto)confirmed is already required to overwrite a file. Looking at the description page history, I don't see any recent non-autoconfirmed edit warring. Therefore, I see no benefit to semi-protection. I'd like to ask how editors will be able to update the map from now on. Administrators have fully protected the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict map for a month due to vandalism. Gone ahead and marked this map as needing a source for the original work. The underpinning data is huge, a user did not just make this up, it was either imported from somewhere else that has not been declared, or it was carefully traced in fine detail from an image of a map, perhaps a scanned map.

On a technical point, the file includes sodipodi:docname="QarabaghWarMap(2020) (4).svg", but it's unclear how old the first version was and there's no obvious licensing statement inside the code. --Fæ (talk) 19:55, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

We have had to go to a DR Commons:Deletion requests/File:QarabaghWarMap(2020).svg as it only took 17 minutes for the source tag to be blanked. This user has used 2 accounts to repeatedly add captions to images of celebrities, listing their roles in superhero films, even though the images have no connection to the films. He also frequently adds puzzling depiction data to the images. His edits have been reverted by me and other editors and I have repeatedly warned him on his talk page, explaining that captions must relate to what is actually shown in the images. But he persists. Gone ahead and marked that map as an unsourced derived work. The SVG is mostly made of an encoded image which has no source. To be fair, that's probably over-egging the problem. However having spent some time trying to create a version without the embedded image, and being unable to do it without my editor crashing, it's not been possible to create and view just the user added lines and text to see what the difference is.

Would someone mind blocking Dixit kalal002. I'm 99% certain this is just the latest sock from Jagdeep singh bittu. Everything they've uploaded (and 99% of everything from prior socks) are copyright infringements, usually Facebook or Instagram. New account day after day after day. Please review and if there are better long-term options out there, I'd love to hear. Given the time it takes to check each image, this is getting tiresome. Offensive abuse from User:Anuragjha17

  • Reason for report: Personal abuse to me on my talk page see here due to the minor role I had in exposing undisclosed paid editing. Contrastingly, the abuse was left directly below the detailed advice I left for them, after my first dealing with them, as I was genuinely trying to be helpful. Unfortunately their article on Wikipedia has just been deleted and they have chosen to backlash against me.

Although the abuse was left by the above user, the aforementioned advice was with one of their now proven sock puppets:

IMO not a big problem. Both accounts have each 1 edit on Commons (in 2008 and 2010). It's rather likely that the depicted person is behind the accounts. Both have email enabled. So, we could ask them for confirmation of identity and of the license of the uploaded images (1 each). Suggestions on how best to handle this going forward? This person is sometimes creating multiple socks per day (Ropuinder (talk · contribs) created today and uploading the same images) and it's a pain from time to time. What's the best way here for me to report these obvious socks to get blocked? They obviously don't care about copyright, so warnings are just a waste of bits.
