It seems unlikely to me that this item is below the threshold of originality in its home country of Japan. While it is probably below the threshold in the US, where textual items receive a special notice, that is not clear for Japan (I think I remember seeing somewhere a Japanese item with lettering that was copyrightable).  Keep - my understanding is that the copyright of typefaces in Japan is not much different from that in the US in this regard. There is a court decision saying, to be copyrightable, a font needs to have a distinct, highly original style compared to normal fonts, and to have artistic appearances that are worth artistic appreciation itself. Not copyrightable.
  •  Keep Looking at the examples and googling a bit for images, I would say that this logo looks safe. The Asahi Beer logo is too simple according to one of the cases on that page. There is also the Cup Noodle case where the words "CUP" and "NOODLE" are found not to be artistic.
One of the cases was about a Sumitomo Construction Machinery logo. Was that case about this logo? It would be useful to add some examples to COM:TOO. --Stefan4 (talk) 00:01, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
