For Betta Recovering.jpg in VI edit

We can improve the image but it is too noisy. In any case we will have tried. You can pay the last version I paid if you do not like it. Have a good day. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 05:46, 25 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open! edit

Dear Boothsift,

You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked.

In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.

Round 2 will end 17 March 2019, 23:59:59.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 18:04, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion edit

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hello. I suspect it wasn't deliberate, but in addition to brightening this image you've also reduced it from 3000 × 4000 pixels to 450 × 600. --bjh21 (talk) 17:03, 11 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Bjh21: Thanks for the notice. --BoothSift 19:03, 11 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Your new version isn't an improvement. It's got the right number of pixels, but it looks like it was made by scaling up the smaller one, rather than by adjusting the colours on the original. For instance, where "DIEU" below the royal arms is easily readable in the original, it's completely unreadable in the new version. --bjh21 (talk) 22:24, 11 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Enlarging images is not helpful edit

I've noticed a few recent cases where you have overwritten an image with an enlarged version of the same image. This is not helpful: it doesn't add any useful detail, but (at least for JPEG images) it increases the file size and adds an additional layer of compression artefacts. If you need to display an image in an article at a size larger than its natural one, you can do that by specifying a size in the image link. For instance, in User:Bjh21/Geograph and Photograph of the Year, I use [[File:Islands of mud, East Hoyle Bank - geograph.org.uk - 237266.jpg|800px]] to cause the reader's browser to display the picture 800px across rather than the original 640px. In many cases, you haven't even enlarged the orignal picture, but have apparently enlarged a lower-resolution version, so that the result is fuzzier than the original. This is particularly obvious in the Wesley plaque where the original was readable but your enlargement was not.

In the following images, your enlargement was accompanied by an improvement, so I've not (yet) reverted them. You might want to consider whether you can make the same improvements starting with the full-resolution version and without enlarging:

In the following cases, your enlargement was not accompanied by any improvement, so I, or someone else, have reverted the change:

Please could you refrain from doing this kind of thing in future? --bjh21 (talk) 12:57, 13 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Bjh21: Oh gosh, thank you. On Photoshop, the results were much better, but I guess I may have uploaded the wrong image for all of these. Thank you and Podzemnik for catching these. --BoothSift 18:03, 13 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Please be more careful about what you chose to nominate at FPC. It may be all fun and games to you, but all your 'withdrawn' nominations make extra work for us who maintain the page. The withdrawn nominations are not processed by Bots, a human has to do the closing and archiving. Thanks! --Cart (talk) 09:26, 24 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Boothsift, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

what is the issue with the vote of stepro? C-M (talk) 20:26, 25 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • According to the RULES: "Explain your reasoning, especially when opposing a candidate (which has been carefully selected by the author/nominator). A helpful review will often reference one or more of the criteria listed above.

Unhelpful reasons for opposing include: No reason". That vote was a violation of the guidelines. --Boothsift 22:38, 25 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Nomination of shells edit

Thanks for nominating some of my shells as VI. But it is a bit confusing for me, for I have a list of pictures for nomination, and I will nominate all relevant species. If you nominate one, it is not always shure, that I realize it and some of the species of my list are already nominated, but I don't know it. So I please you, if you have nominated successfully one of my pictures (I just saw on your talk page, that you also nominated a bird, Eclectus roratus, head) please copy it to my talk page, so that I know, what is nominated, what not. In addition, in some pictures (see Alvania canariensis) I have my reasons not to nominate them, in Alvania canariensis we have already a (better) VI. So I please you again, to copy the results of your nominations on my talk page at least.
I just made copies of the pictures hitherto promoted om ,y talk page, but please make copies on my talk page of future promotions.

After you've moved the page, you also need to change the name in the links at the top part of the nom and put the old page up for speedy delete or it will circulate in the FPC system and later demanding to be "closed". As it stood now the assessment ended up on the redirected page instead of the real file. I'm fixing all this for you now. :-) (Oh, and while it is not prohibited, it is customary not to close your own nom.) --Cart (talk) 13:13, 21 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Because of the missed links, the file and nom page were not connected to the proper file either in Commons:Featured pictures/chronological/current month, Commons:Featured pictures/Places or Commons:Featured pictures, list. Now fixed. It is best for future editing that everything is kept under the same name. Now you know this until the next time. :-) --Cart (talk) 13:29, 21 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

File:Eisvogel kingfisher.jpg edit

Hi and @Archaeodontosaurus, Basile Morin, W.carter, King of Hearts, and Poco a poco: I wonder if you could have a detailed look at this image. I have downloaded it and pixel-peeped and I can see clear evidence that artifical colour (both orange and blue) has been painted onto the image. I know it's only just been promoted, but the decision could be reconsidered if there is a consensus. I'm not pinging everyone who voted. Charles (talk) 13:53, 4 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

There can't be any "clear evidence that artifical colour" on this since the color space of the photo is uncalibrated. That means: "No color-space metadata and no embedded color profile: Windows and Mac browsers and apps treat colors randomly." It is up to your browser/photo program how it looks. --Cart (talk) 15:01, 4 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
Just have a look at a pixel level please Cart. Charles (talk) 17:07, 4 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
Ok Sir. I don't usually like to pixelpeep but I've had a look at it at 80%, 100%, 200%, 300% and 400% and I can't see what you've got your knickers in a twist about. --Cart (talk) 18:06, 4 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps too much saturation, yes, but artificial colour added? I can't say that. That would be strange (and more difficult technically) -- Basile Morin (talk) 00:06, 5 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
This image does not pose me personally any problem. What bothers me is that we can question a vote on frivolous and non-objectivable reasons. We have more constructive things to do. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 05:14, 5 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
Keep this discussion on your page because your opponent wanted it that way. If he had put it on the page of discussion of the image the meaning of his approach would have been different. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 05:48, 5 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Archaeodontosaurus: I see, was he suggesting that my nomination was invalid since it was "painted" and he wants me to agree with him in order to delist it? That I will not do, unless Charles provides a reasonable alternative that is not his image. --Boothsift 06:30, 5 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
I don't understand the vitriol. I am sure this image has been doctored and surely that is not frivolous for any wildlife image. The nomination was not invalid and the support votes were made in good faith. But sometimes, a bogus image can slip through. We should be concerned at that. I started this debate here out of courtesy to the nominator. Apologies if you are unhappy. Boothsift. Charles (talk) 08:31, 5 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Welcome, Dear Patroller! edit

English  español  മലയാളം  Türkçe  +/−

Counter Vandalism Unit

Hi Boothsift,

You now have the Patroller right and may call yourself a patroller! Please take a moment to read the updated Commons:Patrol to learn how Patrolling works and how we use it to fight vandalism.

As you know already, the patrolling functionality is enabled for all edits, not just for new-page creations. This enables us to keep track of, for example, edits made by anonymous users here on Commons.

We could use your help at the Counter Vandalism Unit. For example by patrolling an Anonymous-edits checklist and checking a day-part.

If you have any questions please leave a message on the CVU talkpage or ask for help on IRC in #wikimedia-commons. — Tulsi Bhagat (contribs | talk) 04:42, 22 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
