Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Ayyubid dynasty map request

Hi Ro4444, thanks for creating the map of the Ayyubid sultanate (File:Ayyubid Sultanate 1193 AD.jpg). I just saw it recently and put it as the main picture in the infobox. I was wondering if you could possibly use another color to highlight the Ayyubids' territory because the light pink (color currently used) doesn't show up so well when the image is minimized in the infobox (around 200-250px). Could you use something like a golden yellow (the Ayyubid color) or anything really that pops out more? On a related note, in the Ayyubid dynasty article on Wikipedia, the sources (Yaakov Lev p. 101 using al-Maqrizi in Suluk pp. 82-83, p. 125) say the Ayyubids under al-Muzaffar Umar's commander Sharaf ad-Din Qaraqush conquered Kairouan in modern-day Tunisia by 1188, before Saladin's death, so I think the map should reflect those territorial gains. Currently, the map shows Qaraqush's gains only along the Libyan coast and it doesn't indicate that these territories are a part of the Ayyubid sultanate. Sorry for not responding sooner; I don't always log on every day. Glad you like the map! In response to your requests:

• Hisn Kayfa was added to the map.
• Regarding a color change, yellows don't work too well due to the background. I did reduce the inner glow, which makes the purple shade more prominent. Let me know if you still think it needs work.
• As for Qaraqush...I have to confess that I was somewhat torn on how to treat him for the map. My thoughts on this:
  • First, let me say that my primary source for his activities came from the article on him in the Encyclopaedia of Islam, New Edition (copy of it here).
  • In regards to what Qaraqush was in control of at the time of Saladin's death in 1193, his career was turbulent enough that, even if he did capture a territory at one point, I went with the assumption was that he didn't retain it on a permanent basis unless there is explicit evidence to the contrary. As for Kairouan, Karakush's conquests in 1187 which you mention seems to have only lasted through Rabi I of that year; subsequent to that, he completely lost his holdings in Ifriqiya following the Almohad victory at al-Hamma. In 1190 he regained Tripoli and Gabes, which he was still in possession of when Saladin died. So for the purposes of this map, I only showed him in charge of Tripoli (Gabes being off the map borders); I don't think it would be appropriate to show him in control of territories that had since been lost.
  • As to whether Qaraqush's holdings should be shaded as part of the Ayyubid sultanate, the question is whether Qaraqush was more akin to a loyal lieutenant acting on the Ayyubids' orders, or a rogue player who, while nominally subordinate to Saladin and Taqi al-Din, was effectively an independent entity in North Africa. My impression was that he was more of the latter; his career comes off to me as one of an adventurer with a vague official sanction from Saladin, but who was otherwise acting on his own (the EI2 article on the Ghaniya goes so far as to refer to Qaraqush as a "condottiere"). On the other hand, I'm not 100% invested in this position, and I freely admit that my knowledge on this time period isn't thorough. If there is evidence that the Ayyubids had a measure of control over him, I'd be willing to shade Tripoli and Gabes accordingly. There's actually a brand new book that's extremely germane to this topic (here); it wasn't available when I initially created the map. I'll flip through it and see if anything in there changes my opinion on the subject.
  • Finally, I can't see any argument for including the Banu Ghaniya's holdings within the Ayyubid sphere. In everything I've read on them during this period, they are characterized as nothing more than Qaraqush's allies, and otherwise acted completely independently. It also doesn't help that their territory is ill-defined, making their borders difficult to determine even if I did opt to include them.

@Ro4444: Thank you for making those changes. The map is of great quality and detail, and as of yet, I haven't seen anything measure up to it on the web or anywhere else. Admittedly, I don't know anything about Qaraqush outside of the few interesting snippets I encountered while writing the Ayyubids article. Therefore, I cannot fully respond to your aforementioned points just yet. My understanding was that he was an Ayyubid commander under Taqi al-Din's authority. If in fact he was something of an independent actor with only nominal affiliation to the Ayyubids then that is indeed an important distinction and it should be reflected in the Ayyubids wikipedia article (Qaraqush should also have his own article). Let me know what you find out on the subject. On a slightly separate note, do you know of the status of Qasr Ibrim (today part of Sudan) in 1193? I thought the Ayyubids held that city and only withdrew from the Dongola region. --Al Ameer son (talk) 03:42, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

No problem! I appreciate the feedback. I'll let you know if I come across anything of relevance, and I agree that Qaraqush does warrant his own article on Wikipedia. For Qasr Ibrim, there was a pretty definite statement on the subject in the Cambridge History of Africa, Volume II, page 583: "...the [Ayyubid] garrison of Qasr Ibrim was withdrawn in 1175, and Christian reoccupation and restoration of the church took place." Mamuk Sultanate

Hi Ro, I don't know if its best to reach you here or at the commons so I'm contacting you at both. I was hoping you could do a burdensome favor for me. I've been working on improving the Mamluk Sultanate article lately and noticed that it has a pretty lousy map in the infobox (File:Bahri Dynasty 1250 - 1382 (AD).PNG) Seeing that you created a great map for the Ayyubid dynasty article, would you be able to create a similar map (greatest extent) for the Mamluks, if your schedule allows? The following link gives a decent idea of the extent of the Mamluk Sultanate, at least under the Bahri dynasty: [1]. Hi Al Ameer son,

Good to hear from you again. I'm happy to try and create a Mamluk map. My historical and geographical knowledge for that era is considerably more rusty, so it'll probably take some time for me to get up to speed. As a preliminary thought, a map showing the sultanate on the eve of the Ottoman conquest would probably depict it at its "height," so I may start there.

In addition, I never followed up with the issue of how to treat Qaraqush's holdings on the Ayyubid map. I wasn't able to get a copy of that book, but the more I thought about it the more inclined I was to put it on the map in some form. I might edit that map to show Tripoli and Gabes as Ayyubid holdings, or at least give it a modified shading. Ro4444 (talk) 23:30, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

Honestly, my knowledge of the Mamluk sultanate is also a bit rusty, but I'm learning a lot as I edit Mamluk-related articles (coverage of the Mamluks on Wikipedia has been woefully lacking). The source I linked to above (Page 4) seems to depict the sultanate and its vassals in 1516. Speaking of vassals, such as Nubia and Hejaz, should they be included in the map too? As for Qaraqush's holdings, I'll leave how to handle that up to you, your suggestions sound good. Also, sorry for my late reply.
