Commons:National Museum in Warsaw
The National Museum in Warsaw (Muzeum Narodowe w Warszawie), popularly abbreviated as MNW, is one of the largest art museums in Poland and the largest in Warsaw. It comprises a rich collection of ancient art (Egyptian, Greek, Roman), counting about 11,000 pieces; an extensive gallery of Polish painting since the 16th century and a collection of foreign painting - Italian, French , Flemish, Dutch, German and Russian.
The museum is also home to numismatic collections, a gallery of applied arts and a department of oriental art, with the largest collection of Chinese art in Poland, comprising some 5,000 objects. The Museum boasts the Faras Gallery, with Europe's largest collection of Nubian Christian art, and the Gallery of Medieval Art with artefacts from all regions historically associated with Poland, supplemented by selected works created in other regions of Europe.
Project history[edit]
The Museum began collaborating with Wikimedia Polska in June 2015 and is working towards making public domain reproductions of artworks from the Museum's collection available to the public on Wikimedia Commons. The Museum staff have selected the first batch of 100 images which are now being uploaded in a high resolution, and can be found in this category. The Museum and Wikimedia are going to continue collaborating, with a planned Wikipedian-in-Residence project, further image uploads and improving article content on Wikipedia.
Technical and legal issues[edit]
Initially the Museum aims to share reproductions of 2d images that are out of copyright according to Polish law (ie, public domain artworks). Files submitted by the Museum are marked appropriately as public domain. Scans of artworks originate from the Digitisation Department at the MNW. Files are uploaded by volunteers and Museum staff using glam-mnw, a purpose-written program by Yarl.
