Template:BadJPEG
All images in this template were uploaded in the JPEG format even though it consists of non-photographic data. This information could be stored more efficiently or accurately in the PNG or SVG format. If possible, please upload a PNG or SVG version of this image without compression artifacts, derived from a non-JPEG source (or with existing artifacts removed). After doing so, please tag the JPEG version with {{Superseded|NewImage.ext}} and remove this tag. This tag should not be applied to photographs or scans. For more information, see {{BadJPEG}}.

This documentation is transcluded from Template:BadJPEG/doc.
After uploading the new image, you should
  1. Find all pages in all Wikimedia projects that use this image, and replace the old image with the new image in each. Special:GlobalUsage and the Commons:GlobalReplace application may make this process quicker.
  2. Mark the old image by adding one of these templates (Note: Be sure to read Deletion policy on Redundant/Bad quality images).
  3. If you have a detailed and rational reason based on Commons policies as to why the file is inferior to the alternative version you may nominate it for deletion by clicking on Nominate for deletion in the Tools menu on the left (See Commons:Superseded images policy, {{Superseded}} is not a reason to delete).
For more information, see Commons:File types, Commons:Preparing images for upload and Commons:Media for cleanup.
This template is based originally on en:Template:BadJPEG, the corresponding template with the same purpose at the English Wikipedia.
The template automatically sets the following categories: Category:Images with inappropriate JPEG compression, a subcategory of Category:Images for cleanup, if the filename ends in .jpg or .jpeg (if it doesn't, it categorises into Category:Files incorrectly marked as BadJPEG).

TemplateData
TemplateData is a way to store information about template parameters (the description of those and of the whole template) for both humans and machines. It is used by VisualEditor and possibly other tools like Upload Wizard.
Existing template documentation
At Wikimedia Commons, it is recommended to use {{TemplateBox}} with either ‎useTemplateData=1 or ‎useTemplateData=only on the ‎/doc subpage and transcluding it with {{Documentation}} into the template.
‎<nowiki>
-tags can be wrapped around the arguments, if required, to avoid templates being expanded.
Newly created template documentation and imports
Another option, especially for imported templates, or for users with JSON experience, is placing raw
‎<templatedata>
-tags into the Wikitext of the template, as described in various Wikipediae.
Discussion
There is an ongoing discussion about that matter. Feel invited to comment if you are experienced in either way, your time permits and if you like to share your opinion or to make a suggestion.
