R
agia Omran, human rights lawyer and member of the National Council for Human Rights, received the Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law 2017. The ambassadors of Germany and France in Cairo presented the prize to Omran at a Sunday ceremony.
Omran’s honouring coincided with the 69th anniversary of the globally celebrated Human Rights Day. In her speech, the lawyer asserted the need to protect all types of human rights without selectivity and that they are not just values, but necessities for political and economic stability.
Ambassador of Germany to Egypt Julius Georg Luy praised Omran’s efforts in defending the rights of people despite the challenges surrounding her task, calling for her to continue during challenging times when the country comes under inhumane terrorist attacks.
Ambassador of France to Egypt Stéphane Romatet said the award intends to encourage and motivate Omran to continue doing her job as he praised her career in defending rights and women empowerment.
Omran co-founded the Front to Defend Protesters. In 2013, she received the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Human Rights.
The UN will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights next year.
