Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, hailed Egypt’s leading diplomatic role in all international forums.
Guterres’ statement came during his meeting with Egypt’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Mohamed Idris, to bid him farewell on the occasion of the end of his work.
He asserted that Egypt played an effective role in supporting the purposes and objectives of the UN stipulated in the Charter of the Organization.
The Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for the existing support and cooperation between Egypt and the UN, and its specialized international organizations and agencies in all fields.
He asserted that cooperation with Egypt was reflected in the success of the two parties in dealing with a number of situations and crises at the regional and international levels.
Guterres referred to Egypt’s pivotal role in supporting reform initiatives and efforts in the work of the international organization in its various tracks during its presidency of the Group of 77 and China in 2018, and its current chairmanship of the Peacebuilding Commission in light of the outstanding performance of the Egyptian mission led by Idris.
He has also expressed his appreciation for the efforts of Idris as Egypt’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York, and his effective participation in various UN meetings and activities, which reflects the leading role of Egypt and its diplomacy.
Earlier, Idris participated in a meeting of the UN Security Council’s Ad Hoc Working Group on Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa.
Idris briefed members of the UN Security Council on activities of the UN Peacebuilding Commission, under the Egyptian presidency, and its efforts in supporting the African continent to achieve sustainable peace and development, particularly in light of the double challenges posed by the global coronavirus pandemic.
He presented the UN Peacebuilding Commission’s efforts, particularly with regard to monitoring the implementation of recommendations contained in the UN Secretary General’s report and the UN General Assembly (UNGA)’s resolution on the causes of conflicts and promoting sustainable peace and development in Africa.
