Arab League, Russia hold consultations over regional issues

Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ambassador Hossam Zaki, visited Moscow at the invitation of the Russian side for political consultations. 

Zaki also signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation between the Arab League and the Russian Election Organizing Committee.

A statement issued by the Arab League on Saturday said, “Zaki’s visit to Moscow witnessed a long session of talks with the Deputy Foreign Minister and the Russian President’s envoy to the Middle East and Africa / Mikhail Bogdanov, as well as with senior officials of the Russian Foreign Ministry.”

“The meetings witnessed extensive discussions on various issues in the Arab region, foremost of which are the Palestinian issue, the Syrian crisis, the situation in Libya, the developments of the Iranian nuclear file and other issues of common interest,” the statement read.

It added, “The discussions also dealt with cooperation between the Russian and Arab sides, especially in light of the approaching holding of the sixth session of the Arab-Russian Cooperation Forum at the ministerial level in Marrakesh by the end of next October.”

According to the statement, Zaki confirmed that “the talks were characterized by frankness and contributed to clarifying the visions of each side about the positions of the other side.

“I sensed the support of the Russian side for the positions of the Arab League regarding restoring stability in the Arab region,” he said.

Zaki concluded, “It was agreed to continue regular and intensive consultations between officials of the Arab League and the Russian Federation with the aim of effectively contributing to the settlement of regional crises in the Arab region.
