A few days before the Egyptian elections of sport clubs, federations, and Olympic Committee, scheduled for no later than next December, former sports ministers returned to the spotlight as they sought to run for the elections.

Taher Abu Zaid reportedly aims to run for Al Ahly SC or Al-Shams SC president, Khaled Abdel Aziz for the presidency of Zamalek or Shooting Club, and Hassan Sakr for Zamalek or the Egyptian Olympic Committee, all of whom once served as sports ministers.

However, they are so far potential candidates for the elections, and none of them officially announced his participation in the electoral process.

Meanwhile, Ashraf Sobhi, Minister of Youth and Sports, revealed some issues related to elections within sports bodies, whether federations or clubs.

The elections are to be managed by the Supreme Judicial Committee that was formed during the last period under leadership of Abdo Hassan Attia, with the membership of a group of advisors, judges and specialists.

Sobhi stressed that the ministry stands at the same distance from all candidates in all sports federations. He added that the ministry did not interfere in any way to favour one person over another, and that its role is only to provide a good climate and ensure integrity of the electoral process.

The Minister of Sports indicated that the regulations and laws of the electoral process guarantee the complete impartiality of all candidates, and there are many steps that precede and follow the electoral process to ensure all rights. He expressed his hope that the upcoming elections would produce the elements capable of leading the sports scene in Egypt.

He added that the ministry responded to the recommendations of the Supreme Judicial Committee to make amendments to the regulations governing the electoral process in order to ensure its impartiality and integrity. He noted that the committee will also supervise the procedures of clubs’ general assembly.
