The Deputy Secretary-General held a retreat for United Nations Senior Women Leaders. The day is commemorated each year as the anniversary of the 21 March 1960 Sharpeville massacre.The Security Council adopts Resolution 2728 (2024) demanding an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan respected by all parties leading to a lasting sustainable ceasefire, and also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, as well as ensuring humanitarian access to address their medical and other humanitarian needs. The Resolution also emphasizes the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance to and reinforce the protection of civilians in the entire Gaza Strip. The resolution was adopted with 14 votes in favour and 1 abstention (United States). 

A view of council members voting in favour of the resolution.Cabo Verde’s development projects supported by the United Nations are helping to transform the agricultural sector of Santo Antão, the westernmost island of Cabo Verde. Since 1997, the development projects have helped moving water to irrigate and created useable farmland in an arid climate which previously was unusable for farming. The annual session on gender equality and women’s empowerment, is held 11 - 22 March 2024 under the theme, “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective”.

The world is at a crucial crossroad for gender equality. Globally 10.3 per cent of women live in extreme poverty today.
