UPDATED, 3:10 PM: Warner Bros said today that is has moved the release date for Keanu, the catnapping pic starring Key & Peele‘s Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, back a week to April 29. It now will scratch and claw against, coincidentally, EuropaCorp comedy Nine Lives and three other wide openers: Open Road’s ensemble comedy Mother’s Day, the Focus Features toon Ratchet & Clank and Paramount drama Same Kind Of Different As Me. The move leaves Universal’s action prequel The Huntsman Winter’s War as the lone wide opener on April 22.
PREVIOUSLY, May 27: Warner Bros has slated a pair of disparate comedies for release next spring. Keanu, starring the Key & Peele duo of Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, will hit theaters April 22, followed on May 6 by Going In Style, with Oscar winners Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin toplining the remake of the 1979 hit.
Keanu centers not on a certain actor but a cat — Ted and Neo apparently aren’t great feline monikers — who is abducted by a street gang, sending its humans undercover as drug dealers. Peter Principato and Joel Zadak are producing for Principato Young Entertainment. The pic from Key & Peele director Peter Atencio will go up against Universal’s The Huntsman. Going In Style, from helmer Zach Braff, revisits the three aged buddies who decide to knock over a bank. Its opening-weekend opponent will be a little Disney/Marvel sequel called Captain America: Civil War.
