WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives is expected to vote imminently on H.R. 256, which would repeal the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002.

The following statement can be attributed to Cavan Kharrazian, Progressive Foreign Policy Campaigner for Demand Progress:

“Demand Progress supports the passage of H.R. 256, Repeal of Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002, led by Representative Barbara Lee. This measure is an important step towards ending one of several outdated AUMFs. After almost 20 years, we have seen the dire consequences of these blank checks for endless war.

This important measure should be seen as a first step: For instance, we strongly urge members of Congress to continue reasserting its constitutional authority over war through repealing the 2001 AUMF that initiated war in Afghanistan and subsequently many other theaters; introducing War Powers Resolutions to end our support for the war and blockade on Yemen; and supporting legislation to ensure that any future AUMFs are subject to expiration, pending Congressional approval for extension.”
