About the library

The British School at Athens is the United Kingdom’s hub for advanced research in the humanities and social sciences in Greece and its wider Balkan, Levantine, Mediterranean, and European contexts. The Library is at the heart of the BSA’s work in Athens, providing researchers 24 hour access to a collection of more than 60,000 monographs, 1,300 periodical titles and a growing collection of electronic resources.

The collection covers all aspects of Hellenic Studies, with particular emphasis on:

• Art and archaeology of the Greek world
• Archaeology from the Balkans and Black Sea
• Archaeological Theory and Material Sciences
• Epigraphy
• Byzantine art and architecture
• Travellers to Greece
• A Rare Book collection based on the library of George Finlay

The library contributes to the union catalogue AMBROSIA, which contains records for more than 250,000 titles on the Greek world, and provides access to the local library catalogue.

Accessing materials

Can I see live document availability on Library Hub Discover? No. But note, the library is a reference-only collection.

Can I obtain items via inter-library loan? No - this library does not participate in the inter-library lending scheme. It is a reference-only collection.

Can I visit the library to view materials? Yes - visitors have free access from 9.00 – 19.00, Monday - Friday, with free Wi-Fi and scanning facilities (members may use the library on a 24 hour basis). If you wish to visit it is advisable to contact the library in advance, to ensure that they can accommodate you and that the material you need will be available.
