About the library

The Society of Genealogists’ library and archive is the UK’s foremost family history centre for the study of genealogy and related subjects such as biography, topography, local history, prosopography and heraldry.

Founded in 1911, the Society brings together in one place an unrivalled collection of unique assets for the study of genealogy. The collection is comprised of primary and secondary sources in the form of original documents, research papers, books, periodicals, microforms and digital data. Some records are unique unpublished manuscripts.

We have been closed for a period of relocation and expect to be open by the end of 2023.

Accessing materials

Can I see live document availability on Library Hub Discover? No.

Can I obtain items via inter-library loan? No - this library does not participate in the inter-library lending scheme.

Can I visit the library to view materials? Currently, we are in the middle of a relocation. You can contact the library but we're not open to onsite visitors at this time.
