Introduction
The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES – Friedrich Ebert Foundation) is the oldest German political foundation. It is closely affiliated to the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) and serves as a social democratic think tank by providing civic education.
Brief History
Founded in 1925 as a foundation of the SPD, FES was named after Friedrich Ebert (1871–1925), a social democrat and the first President of the German Democratic Republic. Originally, the main concern of the foundation was to work against discrimination of workers by providing scholarships and research grants. During the Nazi rule, FES was banned. It was reinstituted in 1947 and totally restructured into a charitable organization “for the advancement of democratic education,” in 1954.
