A.W. Frankland

The London Allergy Clinic, 66 New Cavendish Street, London W1G 8TD, UK

The history of immunotherapy during the last century (but recalling its roots two millennia ago) is reviewed.  Concepts such as desensitization and the role of IgE are discussed, as well as practical questions such as how long immunotherapeutic treatment of a patient should continue and what is the best mode of administration of therapeutic substances. The penultimate section briefly reviews likely future developments.
