ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a survey and critical evaluation of Kharijite revolts in the Umayyad period. It addresses the available source material, discusses scholarship on Kharijites, details the formation and development of historical Kharijism, and summarizes the main doctrines associated with this ‘sect’. The chapter also raises desiderata in the study of Kharijism, suggests a new take on Kharijite movements and proposes avenues of research that will shed new light on them. To that end, it also contains the first systematic and comprehensive list of Umayyad-era Kharijite revolts and a chart detailing the tribal affiliations of Kharijite leaders.
