Professor Errol D’Souza appointed the new director of IIM Ahmedabad

MUMBAI: Professor Errol D’Souza, who took charge as the interim director of IIM Ahmedabad from September 2, 2017, has been appointed the new director of the premier management institute.
Errol D’Souza is a Professor of Economics and dean (faculty) at IIM Ahmedabad. He studied Economics and Statistics at the University of Mumbai and obtained his PhD as a University Grants Commission National Research Fellow from the Jawaharlal Nehru University.

The HRD ministry made this appointment just a few hours before the IIM Act came into effect on Wednesday. The new act will give the B-schools the autonomy to select their respective directors and chairpersons of the board of governors.

Prof D'Souza has held appointments such as the IFCI Chair Professor at the University of Mumbai, India, as an Honorary Senior Fellow of the Institute of South Asian Studies at the National University of Singapore, a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University, and as a Visiting Professor at the Turin School of Development of the ILO. He has worked on academic committees of the University Grants Commission and the Indian Council of Social Science Research, and has been associated with the Planning Commission of India and the Reserve Bank of India in various capacities.

He succeeds Ashish Nanda, who resigned in April 2017 before the end of his term. Nanda, a former professor of Harvard Law School was the first professor from a foreign institute to head an IIM.
