Spanish Civil War in US History

I like your additions to Spanish Civil War in US History. I feel the page should lose its title, and expand to feature other US/foreign interactions: the German American Bund and Italian/American pro-Fascist organizations, American Communism (insofar as they saw the Soviet Union as an inspiration), and the fears of American Jews about Nazi Germany. I think I restored all the guides

A couple of images aside, I think I restored all of the guides that were once on wikibooks, and have been trying to make improvements to some of them. The titles of two of my wikibooks

Talking about the A Field Guide to Final Fantasy's Creatures and Monsters and A Traveler's Guide to the World of Pokémon. I wanted to be slightly creative with those two titles to allow others to "connect" with the wikibooks more easily (because field and travel guides are real). I got a Wikipedia admin to undelete page history for several of the Pokemon location articles already for the wikibook, and have been very happy about preserving them. The points of interest lists in the Pokémon town/city articles already make the articles connect with the wikibook title, so I like how it worked out well like that. It might take me a while to build up the Fire Emblem Warriors wikibook (gotta find some time & attention for it, but it's like how you're working on the Zelda Link's Awakening (Switch) guide :).) 2005-Fan (discuss • contribs) 18:49, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

That's cool! I've never played Fire Emblem Warriors, but I've been meaning to play it eventually (A year or so at the earliest, given my backlog), perhaps with your guide for help! I feel bad

I know that importing StrategyWiki is ok, but I said that after the Oracle of Seasons & Ages games that I'd stop because it looks like that Procyon and Prod were genuinely upset about the reuse of their guides in that they actually did have a real passion over the past 15 years of being a strategy guide resource. They have a Luigi's Mansion guide, listed at 100%, but I felt that if ever me, you, or someone else develops it, it's from scratch and/or with help from some Wikipedia content, and similar. 2005-Fan (discuss • contribs) 17:26, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

I appreciate the work you do, and please don't feel bad for it. Given the license, there was no reason to think there would be that sort of reaction, but it's perhaps best we are gregarious with them to cultivate a relationship which is mutually beneficial. Truth be told, I was planning on working on a Luigi's Mansion guide myself since I still have a copy, and never fully beat it when it was a current game. I have an idea for a less conventional, more educational strategy guide for that subject too. I'm not quite sure It's a good idea right now to be honest. I'd like to help out long term, but typically I'm using public computers with sporadic access. Right now I have a loaner computer till late August, but I'm not sure I can reliably contribute in the long term (That's why I've been editing like mad recently, gotta use it while I can). Cryptids are an interesting subject! I think a book on folklore regarding such creatures and other verifiable material surrounding them would be welcome. As Cryptids are a subset of legendary creatures, which are a subset of mythology, It would most likely be shelved on Shelf:Cultural anthropology. I made a red link on the beginning of this reply, which would allow you to create such a bookI think. Removal of periods

I know that you made good illustrations but the captions are not sentences. That is why I removed the periods (.) from Learning anatomy/Kidney and Learning anatomy/Muscle. Next time you add illustrations, don't forget to not add periods.--Gffsgeys (discuss • contribs) 11:35, 15 October 2021 (UTC)

Hello @PeterEasthope:! I had forgotten myself so I went ahead and reverted some of my changes. The addition of the noinclude prevents an error when transcluding into a printable version. Just once produces a benign style error. Twice or more though, and it causes an error to be inserted into the text. (Copied below) Noinclude fixes the issue. I'm unsure if there is a way to undo thanks on Wikimedia projects. You might try asking at Wikibooks:Reading room/Technical Assistance for a better answer. In the short term, the button is quite close to the undo button, so I don't think anyone will blame you for clicking it. If you vehmanantly disagree with the content you thanked, you may consider noting it on your user page. For example, I maintain some subpages on my userpage containing errata, and other project adjacent notes. Perhaps such a list with links to the change in particular would be helpful to you should you wish to disavow a thanks (IE: Thanked a vandal instead of undo)? --Mbrickn (discuss • contribs) 23:52, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

Currently the book uses Template:Printable to autogenerate a printable version dynamically based on the table of contents in the main book. This reduces maintenance requirements, because as chapters are added or removed (For example, during a merger), it is able to compensate on the fly without editor intervention. I can make a manual printed book with the headings included, but it will need to be updated when someone finishes the final chapters of the book. --Mbrickn (discuss • contribs) 01:54, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

That should work, however I've never made a PDF printable version for wikibooks before. I would probably just typeset it using Scribus if I wanted to make it fancy. As per the TOC issue, it appears others have encountered this before. There is documentation available on how it has traditionally been done at Help:Print versions. I have made a pdf version and uploaded to commons. I think because the book is short it’s ok also without a TOC. One last question: is it eligible to become a featured book? Thanks in advance. P.S. Not sure if you're referring to The Story of Rhodesia or Programming in LOLGraphics 3.4

The Story of Rhodesia almost certainly wouldn't be eligible since Part 4 is essentially at 0% completion. (Fails criteria 4 and 6) Historically however this was not an issue, so perhaps it is possible. (See Wikibooks:Featured books/Nominations/Addition/Adventist Youth Honors Answer Book)

I don't see anything immediately disqualifying Programming in LOLGraphics 3.4 from achieving 3.4 status, aside from one potential snag. (Your photo of a cheeseburger used in your examples is freely licenced or one you took yourself, yes?)

Wikibooks:Good books has more information on what counts as a featured book. You can nominate a book to be featured at Wikibooks:Featured books/Nominations. However I am not sure that it has a great chance of success at this current time, in part due to it's unorthodox style (Not necessarily bad or disqualifying, but it is different from other featured books), and more importantly due to a lack of community input in such matters as of late preventing adequate consensus from being reached. Is Salute, Jonathan! status 100%?

Hi, I see that you have created Shelf:Hello, Jonathan!. That’s a very interesting idea and I like it. I have noticed there’s in this shelf a book that claims to be 100% complete however has many red links. Also the printable version just copied the source code of all the chapters so if someone edits one he will have to do the same edit twice. I created this shelf simply to better keep track of all the variants of Salute, Jonathan being made to aid readers looking for such books (As I did with many other subjects), as well as to keep books in the parent shelf more organized.

A separate author recently marked it as complete, so I would ask them, but it appears their reasoning was that the primary part of the book was complete. (All chapters done), despite a number of auxiliary pages being redlinks. Defining status is often more of an art then a science: Is it enough for the primary text to be complete, or should appendix materials also be complete too? For some books, the literal interpretation of 100% works, for others it can never be "100%" complete under a strict definition. Since the authors are still active, and the ranking is potentially correct (Blatantly wrong status can be changed more freely), I would recommend reaching out to the authors of the book to discuss the status ranking of the book.

As for the printable version, I'd have to look at that, but it appears to be very large. Unfortunately transclusion can often fail on very large works, though I haven't investigated the technical reason for why. I can give it a shot of course, but the current example may be the best possible solution for the issue. (Despite being very imperfect) Mbrickn (discuss • contribs) 08:43, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

It doesn’t appear to me as if this book is one that can never be complete if you use the strict definition, but since it’s obvious the primary part is done maybe it should be status 75%? You're right - It shouldn't be under that shelf. Since it's under that shelf via transclusion, the best thing to do would be to move the Hello, Johnathan parent shelf to an appropriate shelf, then add Dag, Jonathan to the Languages of North America shelf, and every other book in the Hello, Johnathan shelf to the constructed languages shelf. I took care of it. Since it's a work of fiction (Albeit one intended for instructional use and thus suitable for Wikibooks in spirit at least), I ended up putting the shelf under literature, and putting the individual books under the relevant language shelves. Hi there,

Sorry I think I caused confusion with my comment at Special:Diff/4030554, which wasn't altogether correct. Looking at [1] GFDL single license content can only be dual-licensed if that content was added before November 1, 2008, unless it came from a public wiki.

In other words, single-licensed GFDL content, not from a public wiki, could only be added to Wikibooks before November 1, 2008.

Both Hindi Lessons and How Language Works appear to have been imported before this cut-off date. So I was wrong to suggest this might not be correct.

It basically lets you use a relative link instead of a hard-coded one - giving an advantage only should the namespace of the book ever change. To be honest, I mostly do it out of habit because it typically saves some space and makes the wikitext more readable in the source editor, but here it actually uses some extra space so that advantage is reversed. If you think it would be easier for the contributors of the book to have the original style, I'd be happy to change it back - Contributors and their happiness are more important then hypothetical benefits. Book idea: Recording and Publishing a Let's Play

First, yes, Stardew Valley is still in progress, and there's more that I wanted to add. But I was thinking it would also be nice to do "How To" on publishing a Let's Play video. I was planning to do a Let's Play for Stardew valley, and thought it might be useful to document my process here. I've only used OBS, but I suppose a 'tv tuner' is a recording device? There are so many possible setups, and I can only speak to the one I have experience with. A TV Tuner is a piece of hardware that allows your computer to receive video input, which can then be streamed into a video player application and or have your footage streamed to a storage disk. While they were really intended for recording TV shows or digitizing home VHS tapes, you could also use them to capture footage from most home game consoles via RF or composite video signal. Pokémon

In the pokémon.. pokèmon pages, the infoboxes and type matchups and all of that are manualy written down, so small changes would be impossible. Shouldnt a template be used? And a module can also be used to automate certain tasks (so, tell it it's type is normal, and comes back with no resistances and a weakness to fighting), but still be possible to choose text manually instead, like in Template:Minecraft/mob and Module:Minecraft/Mob (hint: the spawning argument changes for mobs that deal damage). ^L10nM4st3r / _{Roar at me} 07:47, 5 August 2022 (UTC) Arrgh! I gota fix Minecraft/Wolf, it deals damage, but does not spawn in the dark!

That would be a good idea! I never really played gen 5 or (the original versions of) gen 4 (Didn't have a DS :p), so those are a bit of a mystery to me, but I can help with the other type matchups. The text override idea is very good. I'm not sure if this would be easy, but it would be cool if there was a generation parameter in the template (So we could have one unified template instead of 8).

Perhaps the syntax could look like:

{{PokémonTypeMatchup|Gen8|Normal|Bird}}

Whatever you decide to do, the situation would be vastly improved over the current system, as you have seen at Category:Book:Pokémon/Templates.

And also, do you think the whole page of pokémon (as in, the pocket monsters) be laid out with a templates, as in minecraft mob pages, or manually pieced together like minecraft block/item pages? Suggestion: some pokémon users like strategy. This means categories for type combos would be nice. I can do that too, if you like it. So like Category:Book:Pokémon/grass-poison pokémon. An image of incorrect colour

Please can you (if you have the time) take the image at template:NoteBox, change its colour to a nice shade of blue, upload the image to commons and then update the template? I would do it myself if I could, but I currently lack capable hardware. Thanks. Thanks! Well, my actual first edit was years ago on w:Minecraft: Story Mode. I'd be surprised if it wasn't reverted soon after xD. It sorta bordered "test edit", and I thought only I would see the edit. My first edit with this account I think was to w:Pokémon Characters or something. But I still count the Pokémon page as my first edit. See my first edit summary on wikipedia: that showed just how confused I was. it was something like "/* Pokémon Red & Blue - Red - adding more info */ ". So I put the summary inside the section title. Soon after my first few wp edits, I found w:Diablo III and got my scissors, removing half the content of the page (not as vandalism, there used to be a tag saying the section needed to be shortened - and I wasn't just removing, I was systematically keeping just enough that it would still make sense (its a big game, and I think it could be trimmed more TBH), and changing sentence into such a way that I could remove even more. It was fun - more fun than just blanking a page! Windows Vista/Printable version

Hi there, I have redone the printable version of the book Windows Vista to include th different parts of the books (not just the chapters). What do you think about the change? I have some concerns regarding this, for example the screenshot in the cover page doesn’t actually come from Windows Vista. I searched “Windows Vista” in wikimedia commons and found this image of a GNOME desktop environment theme similar to Windows Vista. Thank you very much! For now I have added a notice on the front page saying that the image is only a reproduction of Windows Vista styling. I doubt that this image would be useful anywhere in the book itself so it’s either to keep it on the front cover or omit it entirely. Pokémon moves in the Pokédex

I came across a few pokémon move pages in the pokédex. Should we keep them? Move them somewhere else? Delete them? One I've found is vandalism, one is way too short to be worth keeping, two are ok, but the styles are completly opposite. The list I've found:

• Pokémon/Pokédex/Scratch - vandalism
• Pokémon/Pokédex/Will-O-Wisp - too short
• Pokémon/Pokédex/Ember - OK but missing info
• Pokémon/Pokédex/Acid Armor - I prefer this one

Apologies for the delay. I would like to note that I am not the primary author of the book as stated in a deletion request, simply a guy trying to maintain it when possible.

Philosophy of the Pokemon Wikibook. (Inclusion of moves)

I'm not quite sure if the pages on Pokemon Moves should be kept in their current location. On one hand the idea of one book covering Pokemon in its entirety is a bit ludicrous, albeit far more feasible when the book was started in the mid 2000s. On the other hand a lot of info doesn't change much from game to game, and for some of it in a central book is more sensible than repeating it 9+ times in individual books. (Though I would not want to prevent individual book authors from doing so if they so desire)

The root problem (Soapbox)

The problem in my view is that the book was stopped from further development by its original authors in the mid 2000's, disrupting organic growth by freezing it in time for over 10 years, where other wikis and sources have marched onwards, raising the bar for quality our readers and editors expect, and being able to organically grow with the series. I have tried to do what I can, but I am stretched thin, and will not be able to cover everything.

Thoughts on specific moves

• I agree that Acid Armor is a move article that should serve as a base goal for existing move pages for quality.
• I'm not sure if the move Scratch is actually vandalism. I don't have a copy of the game at my disposal right now, but wasn't that a real move in the early game (At least in Gen 3 and possibly others)? It's formatted strangely, and isn't really worth a lot in its current state, but unless it's actually wrong I'm not sure it's worth the effort to delete either. Can you tell me what makes it vandalism? I may be missing something.
• Will-O-Wisp is very short of course, but it seems accurate, though very incomplete. The deletion reason given there is different from the reason given here "Wrong place for Pokemon Attacks". This could be fixed with a move if this indeed is the case, but I think it was probably correct when the page was created in 2006.
• If Ember is OK then it doesn't need to be deleted. Missing info is typically a reason to add missing info, not for deletion.

TL;DR

I think they should be kept but expanded upon. I'm ambivalent to if they are moved or not. I agree wholehartedly that a unified style would be best, and suggest following acid armor as a template for the formation of a local style guide. Mbrickn (discuss • contribs) 23:16, 25 November 2022 (UTC)

Scrath is an attack, but I've never seen a page look like that. In any case, whatever it says, my device cannot draw unicode chars. I dunno why I tagged the Ember page. Can't remember what was on my mind at the time. Where do you think they should go? Pokémon/Moves? I was thinking a single page as a list of moves, along with basic stats, then a more detailed description afterwards, would be more maintainable. It's covered by the CSS - It was still machine readable, but not human. In this case, I re added the decistage for human readability, while keeping status for machine readability.

It would be handy if shelves supported decistage directly, but being based on the quarter system makes it a bit awkward to translate. Perhaps something like the following could be used?

Evenly balanced (Eschews strict lingual correctness for balance & compatibility with existing system)

• Corresponds to interpretation of 0% as "Freshly started" books.
