Summary

Description
English: Lady Hamilton as either a bacchante or Ariadne, daughter of King Minos of Crete in Greek mythology, by Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun.

Sir William Hamilton commissioned it. Both Hamilton and Nelson greatly admired this portrait.

Nelson wrote to Emma on hearing the painting was up for sale: “My dearest friend you are on SALE: I am almost mad to think of the iniquity.” Nelson paid £300 for it, and from then it hung over his bed for the rest of his life.
