Summary

Description
English: Closed caption text transmitted as digital data on Line 21 of Field 1 of an analog NTSC television signal vertical retrace interval. Format of an EIA 608 caption is the line synchronization pulse, a color burst of 9 cycles of 3.58 MHZ , a run-in signal of 503 Khz, a start pulse, then two 7-bit characters with odd parity. The vertical retrace interval can carry other kinds of data, and sometimes caption data is present on other lines. Additional data can be carried on Line 21 of Field 2. (Ref: E.P. J. Tozer, Broadcast Engineer's Reference Book, CRC Press, 2012 ISBN 1136024182, page 226 ) The caption signal is regenerated by a set-top box for use by analog television recievers, using data encoded in the digital television broadcast.
