Global Leadership Foundation
The Global Leadership Foundation (GLF) is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation comprising a network of former heads of state or government and other distinguished leaders (GLF Members) who seek to assist developing countries improve governance, bolster democratic institutions and resolve conflicts. The organisation does so by arranging for GLF Members to provide confidential peer-to-peer advice to current heads of governments committed to peace, democracy and development. The Global Leadership Foundation is active across the world. It works by invitation from a head of government and does does not publicize the countries in which it works.
The Global Leadership Foundation was set up in 2004 by its current Chairman FW de Klerk as a way for former presidents, prime ministers, cabinet ministers and other distinguished former leaders to make use of their experience to help those in power today to make better decisions on behalf of their people.
There are currently 45 GLF Members. New members are selected by existing members.
In addition to the provision of direct but discreet advice on an ever-increasing range of topics to serving national leaders, GLF Members engage in mediation, discussions with leaders below the national level, consultative forums on key issues, dialogues with the heads of key institutions, regional public conferences, and other forms of engagement with like-minded organisations.
The foundation is supported by the GLF International Council, which consists of organisations and individuals who recognize the importance of GLF's work and support the foundation financially. A limit is placed on the size of each donation to preserve the foundation's independence.
