Joost Hiltermann
Joost R. Hiltermann is the Program Director, MENA for International Crisis Group.[1] He was previously its Chief Operating Officer.[2]
Hiltermann earned an MA degree in International Relations from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in 1980, and a PhD in Sociology from University of California, Santa Cruz in 1988.[1]
Political Activism
Hiltermann is known for his pro-Palestinian activities, using different human rights frameworks and mechanisms. In addition to managing the ICG's Middle East campaigns, where his views are reflected in the organization's political stance, bias and employment practices, he has worked for Human Rights Watch and for Al Haq, a Palestinian NGO claiming to promote human rights, whose executive director was convicted for involvement in terrorism. [3] In an article published in Middle East Report, published by the radical MERIP organization, he describes his activism at Al Haq during the 1980s.[4]
