It has been tagged "citation needed" for some while, so with a contradictory source, the most sensible thing seems to be to delete it. undo

One of Batavia's masts is shown in the water; the published account says this mast was deliberately felled by the crew in an attempt to lighten the ship, but got snagged alongside it. undo
