Tarawneh was born inon 1 May 1949.<ref name=zawya/> He received a bachelor's degree in economy from [[the University of Jordan]].<ref name=zawya/> He also holds master's degree (1974) and PhD (1980) in economics, both from the [[University of Southern California]].<ref name=zawya/>
