Mahmoudiyah (also transliterated Mahmudiyah, Mahmoudi, or Mahmoodiyah, prefixed usually with Al-) is a Sunni Arab Iraqi rural city south of Baghdad. Known as the “Gateway to Baghdad,” the city's proximity to Baghdad made it central to the counterinsurgency campaign.

Mahmudiya District has approximately 550,000 inhabitants, about 92 percent of them Sunni Arabs and the rest mostly Shias. Most of the inhabitants live in rural areas. This region inhabit by 5 tribes: Al Janabi, Dulaim, Al Ubaid, Qarghoul and Al Jubour
Mahmudiya District has about 550,000 inhabitants, about 56% of them are Sunni Arabs with rest being Shias. The district was over 90% Sunni before the start of the Iraqi Civil War in 2006. However, the district's Sunni population diminished significantly due to flight from the Shia militia. The trend continues to the present day where the district is fast losing its Sunni majority. This is accelerated since the restart of the Civil War in Iraq in summer of 2014. Once the dust settles, it is unlikely that the district may have any more than a small Sunni presence.
