The '''U.S. Employment Cost Index''' (or ECI) is a quarterly economic series detailing the changes in the costs of labor for businesses in the United Sates economy. The ECI is prepared by the [[Bureau of Labor Statistics]], in the [[U.S. Department of Labor]]. It is a widely watched series by the finacial sector, yet the ECI gets less press coverage than the more commonly quoted [[CPI]], or Consumer Price Index, which is also prepared by the BLS. The reason for the importance of the ECI is that it gives an indication of whether commodity price changes flow through business or are absorbed in lower or higher business profits.
