Nicaragua has three distinct geographical regions: the Pacific lowlands – fertile valleys which the Spanish colonists settled, the [[Amerrisque Mountains]] (North-central highlands), and the Mosquito Coast (Atlantic lowlands/[[Caribbean Lowlands|Caribbean lowlands]]).
