given the prevalence of gps devices edit

maybe latitude and longitude could be left in without disparaging remarks about how wiki is somehow purer when useful location information is deleted. homebuilding70.130.38.153 (talk) 02:14, 23 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

What are you talking about? We have latitude and longitude provided in four different places. Nyttend (talk) 04:24, 23 February 2009

It is useful to know what you are dealing with when you see a given latitude and longitude. When it's given for a small town or a large city--you don't know exactly what you are dealing with. Latitudes and longitudes for airports are precise, they are for the airport and NOTHING else, and they have, if you will, a historical and an encyclopedic basis. On this basis of precision and accuracy, many would vote to include the (surveyed)elevation and historically established latitude and longitude. It might be good to know the magnetic deviation but those that don't want to know (much of the world is TMI for them, even encyclopedias) won't ask, I guess homebuilding70.130.36.130 (talk) 01:59, 25 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm still not clear what you're talking about altogether, although I'm assuming that you mean something like "it's a great idea to have coordinates listed for the airports, because they're precise and useful". To be sure: but that's a matter for the airport articles, not for the city articles. We could add precise coordinates for everything else in the city, too, but we don't because that's not the point of the city article. Nyttend (talk) 05:07, 25 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

maps in the current entry edit

The 1914 railroad map is significant historically, but the 2005 "roadmap" incorrectly places the airport in the southeast sector of Hillsboro when it is, actually, at the far southwest sector. An updated map would be appreciated.Homebuilding (talk) 03:20, 28 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

newspapers edit

I'm still finding my legs as a Wikipedian, so I apologize if I've made a mistake. I don't believe I have--at least, not by noting the existence of the Hillsboro Free Press in this article. The Free Press is the most widely-read newspaper in Marion County. The Free Press was founded by Hillsboro natives Don Ratzlaff and Joel Klaassen. While it is free and ad-supported (rather than sold as subscriptions), its journalists are award-winning members of the Kansas Press Association. There are only two newspapers in Hillsboro: the Free Press and the Star-Journal. There is no issue about creating a lengthy list. In my mind, the primary issue is that when anyone looking for information or news out of Hillsboro clicks a link to the Star-Journal, they'll find an archive hidden behind a pay wall -- but equivalent (or superior) reporting is available for free via the Free Press web site. If you are still not convinced that the Hillsboro Free Press should be included in this article, consider the Free Press's reporting of any locally important issue, such as Hillsboro's entry into a class-action law suit over atrazine. You'll find that the Free Press is as legitimate a newspaper as exists anywhere in the world, and deserves to be listed. http://www.hillsborofreepress.com/content/view/18089332/31/ Andrewottoson (talk) 16:25, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

My apologies for removing the link previously. People often add links to advertise their website, and articles aren't supposed to have tons of external links. However, it's a great idea to have links to both newspapers in this specific case. Thanks for explaining; if you'd not, I would have removed it and thus reduced the article's quality! Nyttend (talk) 16:58, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Both are correct in this case. The guideline for city articles wants only official city links in the external links section and a prose description of local media in the article. I've done that, borrowing heavily from Andrew's description above and moving the links into the paragraph as references. The paragraph could use some cleanup.
Andrew, you are up front about your connection to Hillsboro and the Free Press. Continue to make suggestions here on the talk page or judicious edits in the media section and other editors can correct for any perceived bias caused by possible conflict of interest. Can you provide more information on the competing paper to help balance the new paragraph?
Other suggestions for Andrew: I placed a link to the Kansas Press Association. That seems like a worthy article; consider starting one. Tabor College could use more than a mention in the lead paragraph. Consider expanding the education section. Can you provide any pictures from around the city? Othewise borrow one from Tabor College (Kansas) (I contributed those). JonHarder talk 17:21, 11 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the feedback and suggestions, and I'll contribute as often as my spare time allows. For those concerned about the appearance of a conflict of interest: (1) I'm signing my real name, so I'm very aware that my credibility is at stake every time I click the "save page" button; and (2) I have been (and always will be) as transparent as possible about my connections to Hillsboro, Tabor College and the Free Press. Still, it seems the wise thing (at least for now) is for me to suggest changes here rather than make major additions to the media section of the main article. I'll see if I can enlist some help with developing Tabor's place within the education section. Andrewottoson (talk) 02:02, 12 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

A few thoughts on the Media section of the article:
The Star-Journal is one of three Marion County newspapers owned by Hoch Publishing (http://marionkansas.com/). I should note that a number of the reporters who work for the Hoch papers (particularly the Marion Record) are also "award-winning members of the Kansas Press Association."
Lists of Kansas Press Association "awards of excellence" winners dating back to 2001 are available via http://www.kspress.com/view.asp?ID=50 (Because I won one of these things, I probably ought to leave it to someone else to decide whether/where/how best to incorporate these lists of awards into this or other articles). The most straightforward approach I can see would be simply to remove the note that "Free Press journalists are award-winning members of the Kansas Press Association."
Here's a citation for the claim about Free Press readership: http://www.hillsborofreepress.com/images/stories/advertisinginfo/freepressaudit07.pdf. With a verified circulation of more than 7,300, the Free Press is distributed to over 99% of the households in Marion County, with 86% indicating they read or look through the paper. I'm not aware of the Hoch/Star-Journal numbers, but I'll see if I can find out.
I know for certain that the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin (also published by Hoch) has also reported on the atrazine law suit issue. I'm not sure what the Star-Journal published, but I think it's a fair bet that its reporting of atrazine issue was similar to (if not identically the same as) the Gazette-Bulletin's. The atrazine law suit issue has been a bit of a hot topic locally for months (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=atrazine+hillsboro+ks). Andrewottoson (talk) 02:02, 12 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
