Untitled edit

Variant spellings of Bhutanese names are always a problem, but in the case of the King I think we can safely standardise on Wangchuck (over Wangchuk) as the former is the spelling used by Kuensel, the national newspaper, and also by http://www.bhutan.gov.bt, the website of the Bhutanese government. technopilgrim 21:01, 29 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Romanization edit

I've deleted the proposed romanization of his name because it has no source for the system of romanization, and also because I question if it is helpful to anyone. Romanization is usually done when an alphabet needs a system of rendering into the latin alphabet, but given the Bhutanese use English extensively, so why introduce an alternative spelling system on top of the Bhutanese direct system?

However, if someone is motivated to include the Dzongka spelling of the name in Tibetan unicode, that would be much appreciated. technopilgrim 00:36, 11 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wives/sisters edit

The King has four wives (all sisters) - does this really mean that the King is married to his sisters, or is it an honorary title or form of address? This isn't very clearly explained. I admit I don't know much about Bhutan and would like this to be explained. Walton monarchist89 15:11, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think it means that the wives are all each others sisters, but not biologically related to him. --Braindigitalis 23:17, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Criticism section needs work edit

We do need a section on the Nepali refugee issue on the king's page, as it is the main criticism leveled against him. But the present version discredits the encyclopedia by relying on unsourced assertions of "ethnic cleansing", etc., and equally unreferenced speculations as to the "true" motivations behind Time Magazine's inclusion on their list of 100 leaders. I've tried to tone it down a bit, but it needs a lot more work. -- technopilgrim 21:49, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Indeed, the monarchy (which was absolute during the period in which the Lhotshampas were persecuted and exiled), and in particular the person featured in this article is dicussed in this ny times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/29/opinion/bhutan-is-no-shangri-la.html as a key figure in the refugee crisis the policies of his reign initated and perpetuated. I am not a scholar of Bhutanese history and have therefore not made any changes to the existing article, but a minimum of reasearch produces credible sources documenting this sad event which certainly desreves inclusion in this wiki article, if only in the interests of neutralality and balance rather than a "whitewash". I hope someone who works on Bhutanese and or Nepali related articles will make the edits (perhaps under a "criticisms or controversies" sub-section. coat of arms edit

There is a nice image of the coat of arms on his son's article and other articles relating to Politics of Bhutan. It is possible to add this image without using the Politics of Bhutan template. I am not familiar with this topic, so, perhaps there are issues of which I am not aware. I thought it would be nice for the article.

Name of article edit

I have removed "King" and am reverting to original name as per WP:MOS about honorifics-Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom doesn't have her queenly title, and Akihito isn't referred to imperially in his namespace. Chris 00:50, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

HRH Prince Dasho Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, son of Ashi Tshering Yangdön Wangchuck (April 14, 1986) edit

This entry is (obviously incorrectly) linked to "Jigme Dorji Wangchuck" the third King of Bhutan (1952 - 1972). Maybe the younger Jigme Dorji Wangchuck shares his forebares, name and/or the name is wrong. Either way, the link is in error. Perhaps someone can sort this out? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.183.108.36 (talk) 22:13, 9 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Tone edit

The language in this article is non-encyclopedic, with a tendency to accept the subject's reasoning for his decisions during his reign, but then the odd last portion full of weasel words, etc. Some of it feels like it's been lifted from travel book(s) and/or newsweekly article(s). --Orange Mike | Talk 15:42, 17 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

these years could be planned better edit

Wives, Children, and Styles edit

The layout of wives and children section makes no sense to me. The styles section needs explanation as to what the styles are and are about. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.112.128.15 (talk) 21:37, 2 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Contentious material back edit

I've removed the reappearance of contentious material from this page (and from the page about his son, the fifth king of Bhutan, which was added by the same editor) under the Biography of Living Persons policy. The tone, undue prominence and one-sided sources, some of which are outdated, (eg the refugees have all been resettled mostly in US, Canada and Australia) and the repetition across the two pages, suggests political motivation. I have suggested on the user's talk page to write a more balanced account in a neutral tone. Doctor 17 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 18:43, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

I've restored the bits of the content I had the time to verify. It's thoroughly sourced—I don't think it's fair to say the New York Times, Human Rights Watch, Al Jazeera and the Seattle Times are 'one-sided'. The prominence doesn't seem undue either.
