Explain what a bug is edit

This page doesn't clearly explain what a bug is or why anyone would care.

When a computer program doesn't work right, that's a bug. It could be design error or coding error, but the user doesn't know or care about this distinction. The answers are coming out wrong, or a feature just plain won't work.

We could list typical causes of bugs, as well as remediation efforts or strategies to prevent bugs arising in the first place.


Most people have a strong knowledge of what a bug is. It is one phenomenon, where if you see a broom, you know it's a broom. However, rules of Wikipedia are strict - no original research or opinions. Therefore, (ignoring that it should be a dictionary rather than a wikipedia entry) you cannot place an entry "broom" into Wikipedia unless you reference a book (or dictionary) describing what a broom is. (But then Google set up Knol as alternative to solve the issue).
In my less than humble opinion, a bug is either one or more of
  • An intended feature with clearly obvious unintended or misbehaving results.
  • An unintended feature that does not behave desirably.
  • An unintended feature that unexpectedly provides a behaviour 80% of users have been clamouring for, but the other 20% dislike the behaviour.
  • An intended feature that behaves as expected, but the intended behaviour causes serious problems because the bug was started by architects at the planning stage.
  • An undesirable or unintended feature, on which the architects and programmers backpedal and document as a feature.
  • An intended feature, but expectation changed as the years went by and is now no longer a desirable behaviour. Architects and programmers prefer to define these as "needs for enhancement" and would not classify it as a bug. Regardless, a user knows a bug when he/she sees one.

Therefore architects, programmers and users do not concur on what a bug is. However, in any event any uprising rebellion by users is successful - a bug is simply a feature a user does not want or no longer wants because the feature is bugging the user.

I also agree that a bug can be intentional. Unlike a glitch, which is always unintended by the devloper(s), a bug is defined by the end users. Therefore, a developer's opinion or intentions are irrelevant. The, "That's not a bug. That's a feature" argument has always frosted my bum like a three-foot snow cone. That would be like if someone says, "When you tripped and fell, you accidentally stabbed that woman to death," and I responded with, "That wasn't an accident. I killed her on purpose." It just drives me crazy that developers would sit there and tell you with a straight face that they intended to annoy you, and they're not going to change it because annoying you is exactly what they wanted to do. The correct response would be, "I'm sorry. I thought that would be a feature you'd like. I'll fix that bug as soon as possible." NOT the moth edit

The moth was definitely NOT the origin of the term bug. If you read Grace Hopper's log carefully, you will see the following points: 1. She wrote "The first actual case of bug being found" which implies that at the time of the writing, they knew of many other cases of bugs that were not actual. 2. i.e. the term "bug" was in use before this moth was found. 3. That may be where the word comes from - but a SOFTWARE bug is a very different matter. Why is it "debugging" and not "error removal" or "problem solving"? Where did the image of an insect as relating to a programming error come from originally? Moth date is wrong edit

The date given for the Mark II moth is wrong. It should be 1947, not 1945. Note that in the first line of the quoted section, it says "n 1946, when Hopper was released from active duty...", yet in the last line of that quote it's saying 1945 -- the previous year! Also, if you follow the link to the actual log page, it gives the date as 1947.

The year is also wrong in the Description and Date in the page containing the image of the famous moth, File:H96566k.jpg. These errors were apparently copied over from Wikimedia Commons. These also need to be fixed, but I don't see how to edit them. HairyWombat (talk) 19:53, 15 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
How can the date be wrong? The written attribution is to 1945, but it is correctly identified in the article as being 1946. As I state, it is wrong in the Description and Date of File:H96566k.jpg. These state 1945 and, as this article correctly points out, they should be 1947. "I have the right principle and am on the right track, but time, hard work and some good luck are necessary too. It has been just so in all of my inventions. The first step is an intuition, and comes with a burst, then difficulties arise -- this thing gives out and [it is] then that "Bugs" -- as such little faults and difficulties are called -- show themselves and months of intense watching, study and labor are requisite before commercial success or failure is certainly reached."

There are several references to bug in the modern sense in Victorian Internet by Tom Standage. probably where Edison came across it anyway, since he started out as a telegraph operator. I think this article ought to include at least a pointer to them...

Mars Climate Orbiter mishap edit

The explanation for the Mars Climate Orbiter mishap is wrong. It was not about confusing meters and yards. The quantity in question was impulse, not length. The report on the mishap states that the expected unit was Newton-seconds while the delivered data was pound-seconds.

This does present a problem though because length is easy to grasp for the public while impulse is a fairly unknown quantity. The concept of meters/yards is well known, Newton-seconds isn't.

Suggestion: let the text "failed to convert yards to meters" instead be: "failed to convert from imperial to metric units"

Patriot "bug" edit

The link to MIM-104 Patriot indicates that the failure in Dharan was caused by a computer bug. There's no corresponding text in MIM-104 Patriot. If there's any support for this theory, it should be added to Patriot article. Otherwise the link should be deleted.---Isaac R 01:22, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

This article says that 28 deaths were caused by the Patriot bug, but pedantically, weren't the deaths caused by a scud missile and the team responsible for firing it? Operating system bias edit

There were some disgraceful examples of operating system bias in the "modern bugs and security holes" section. Please, let's leave out our preferences and opinions and state the facts. Every operating system is vulnerable to viruses and security holes, not just WINDOWS. Please give us a break. The section even tried to say that Linux's "Kernel Panic" was only some kind of mythology and isn't really needed because Linux NEVER crashes! And don't forget that closed-source software is out to destroy humanity.

Well, Linux has crashed and crashes much less often than Windows. Furthermore, the desing of Linux and of the other Unix allows them to resist to viruses better than Windows.

Bug examples are becoming irrelevant edit

There are links to Star Trek episodes that don't have any berring on bugs or defects and all of the video game links are to the products themesleves not to defects found in them. Unless someone can link to sepefic bugs, don't put a link there. I will check back shortly and remove these links if they are not fixed. Walter Görlitz

In "Writing the laboratory Notebook" (ISBN 0-8412-0906-5), the author Howard Kanare also relates the moth story and says: "The term bug was already in common use to connote problems in electrical and mechanical systems before this time. It came from the Welsh term bwg, meaning a bugbear or hobgoblin."

This needs a little editing. Under "Etymology", the sentence "Problems with radar electronics during World War II were referred to as bugs (or glitches), and there is additional evidence that the usage dates back much earlier" follows an example of an earlier usage. Computer vs. Software Bug edit

If a bug is something in software that causes a program to run incorrectly, why is this page at "computer bug" instead of "software bug"? Too narrow? edit

The definition of 'bug' given here is programming centric. This is fine, so long as we have a more general term, 'defect' say, for errors that can occur during requirements, analysis, or design. However, a search on 'defect' (and several synonyms) fails to retrieve any information on software.

We clearly need a more-generic article on digital defects that can somehow subsume all of hardware, firmware, and software bugs and probably also specification bugs. Maybe one already exists? Does anyone know?

I second this. Also, the implication on this page is that all bugs are caused by programming or design error. In many cases, it is simply design oversight: a permutation of events that no-one had anticipated.
Any software of non-trivial complexity has bugs. It's not because all programmers are cowboys but because how could you possibly design software that always performs the ideal action for every possible permutation of inputs / data?

I find this article particularly egregious. The term "Bug" is so broad as to defy specific definition. Substantial effort has been applied to the standardized definitions of "defect", "fault", "failure", "symptom", etc., to make a separate definition of "bug" useless. I agree that this article is a (poorly worded) definition and belongs in a dictionary, not an encyclopedia. Some statements in this article such as "...usually because different parts of the computer system operate at different speeds." and "For example, formal program specifications are used to state the exact behavior of programs,..." are erroneous and the text generally is unsubstantiated. Added section on programming style edit

I added a bullet on programming style under the "Prevention" section.

Good programming style is after all our first line of defence, and typos are the first and I strongly suspect, the most common cause of bugs. I feel that the role played by uncaught typos doing things like throwing off the program flow is somewhat underplayed elsewhere on the page - they aren't mentioned at all in the "types of bugs" section, for instance. All the bugs listed are methodological bugs: flaws in the reasoning of the programmer, rather than in his fingers.

However, while these are critical concepts in programming, I'm unsure if that section should be there, or if it should just be a brief mention here, and a new section created in programming style, called something like "bug avoidance". There should be a section about the meaning of known bugs. You can find them in many big software projects and they are not fixed, because they are not severe and chances are that you will create a new bug if you fix this one.

Well, there are many reasons for a known bugs list in software projects. Most of them are just TODO lists or information on bugfixes in upcoming updates. Most of them don't need to be mentioned in an extra section in this article. I can't find good sources for my point and this problem seems widely unknown. "Bug" defined in 1892. edit

The book "THE STANDARD ELECTRICAL DICTIONARY" by T. O'CONOR SLOANE, published in 1892 contains these two entries:

Bug. Any fault or trouble in the connections or working of electric apparatus.

Bug Trap. A connection or arrangement for overcoming a "bug." It is said that the terms "bug" and "bug trap" originated in quadruplex telegraphy.

Hopper's moth edit

It's a cute story, but only of minimal relevance to this article. Grace Hopper simply pasted a moth into a log book as a kind of joke. Whether the bug caused a hardware problem or not is sort of interesting, but this article is not about computer hardware. It's not just a cute story. It has been handed-down as the story of where the term originated. The hardware bug caused a defect in the program and so makes perfect sense in this article. I have already started work on Computer bug, which will reference both software bug and hardware bug. I don't think that Bug (computer term) refers mainly to software bugs. For example, my own laptop computer periodically goes into a mode where its operating system makes it difficult for the user to change windows with the mouse. It's caused by a hardware defect, wherein repeated keystrokes are rapidly produced; to make a long story short, I have to take out the battery and do a hard reboot. I don't think Dell or Microsoft would call this a software error, but it's certainly a design flaw in the computer.

The bug (which, by the way, someone else found) was in a relay; that's a mechanical part. Not only that, but a "hardware bug" would be generally be a design fault. Anyway, not a software bug, even if the moth caused the relay to malfunction so that the program produced incorrect results.

I think what makes the story so charming is that it is not meant literally but was a light-hearted inside joke. The term "bug" had already been used by Bob Campbell (according to Howard Aiken) and even earlier by Tom Edison.

This terminology, "Mistake metamorphism," may well be appropriate, but is not particularly an accepted term. This author cites his own publication as a reference. If the term is accepted by further citation of this authors work, then it may be a appropriate section of this article. Otherwise this section should be deleted. I'd also vote for deletion; even if previously published (which I have no evidence for) the term isn't even remotely common and the section does not seem to add any value. Worse, it give the impression that there is some sort of overarching synthesis relating a laundry list of terms without giving the faintest indication what that might be. "First actual case of bug being found" later addition to logbook? edit

I don't generally edit wikipedia so I'm just leaving a note here for those who might consider making a decision, but poking around the web on the history of the "computer bug" terminology and the story of the moth in the Mark II I found a source claiming that the notation "First actual case of bug being found" was actually added to the logbook considerably later than 1947, probably in 1979. Software Defect vs Software Bug edit

In my opinion, there is a difference between defects and bugs. A defect is a failure in a system to meet certain requirements (whether they are non-existing in a system, or bugged and don't perform like they should), while a bug is more specific the failure of existing features, and can't be used to describe the absence of a feature. Yet many pages link to this Software Bug page, while the meaning is actually a defect. Examples of such pages are the pages describing bug tracking systems, like Mantis.

I think it would be good to create a defect page, to prevent a loss of information (or even giving a wrong impression that a defect is equal to a bug) when linking from pages describing a defect.

Please let me know if you think this definition I provided is wrong, I found a bug defined both as 'a defect in software'(dictionaries) and a 'error or fault in software' (this article defines it like this), the latter supporting this suggestion, the former contradicting it. Maybe we should first clearly define what we consider a bug, keeping in mind above suggested change, then talk about this change afterwards.

Would the IEEE Computer Society Software Engineering Body of Knowledge be considered a "reliable source"? This carefully differentiates a "defect" or "fault", which is what is wrong with the program, the "error", which is the departure of the computation from the correct result and a "failure", which is the observable outcome that differs from the stated intent. In my experience, the use of the ill-defined term "bug" indicates that the speaker / writer has a poor understanding of software quality and at best jumbles these concepts up together and at worst wants to create the impression that bugs are inevitable so let's not go looking for root cause. Edison Movie reference - 1940 edit

I just heard a bug reference in the movie - Edison, The Man (1940) [1] - towards the end of the movie when Edison determines that his two dynamos have a problem because the speed governors were not synced until he mechanically linked them.

His first erroneous attempt caused the dynamos to act as a motor/generator combo until the governors were mechanically linked. He wanted the dynamos to work as parallel generators. In the movie, Spencer Tracy distinctly used the term "bugs" for this problem when he first attempted to light up New York City.

Granted, this is a movie. But the term "bug" was obviously used during Edison's invention period for mechanical design issues that needed to be resolved and thus included in the movie. Re-quoting the previous Edison quote - ["Bugs" — as such little faults and difficulties are called]. And the movie itself is from 1940, which is earlier than when it was first used for software. Bug triage section - can we work on this as a group to improve it this week? edit

Hi, I am currently overviewing a bug tracker (mantis) for the software project I am a community manager for. We are discussing setting up a triage system. We use MantisBT. I really needed info on this but the wiki area for it is prettey bad and has two warnings also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_bug#Bug_management

I would like to work on this, is anyone free in the next few days to pull something together colabaritivley? We could use my project IRC to meet, or something else.

Bug tracking versus issue tracking edit

The bug tracking section seems to have morphed over time to include issue tracking content. Both JIRA with the JIRA Agile plug-in and Bugzilla with several different Agile plug-ins, listed here, allow the addition of user stories and even epics to pure defect tracking tools. I see no need to exclude that information and pass them off as generic "issue tracking" tools. While they're not bugs, they're in bug tracking software. They're also not issues either. You don't need the JIRA Agile plugin or a Bugzilla agile plugin to track non-bugs in JIRA or Bugzilla. In JIRA they are just different types of issues (so JIRA is an issue-tracking system), and in Bugzilla and other "bug trackers", they can be given a severity of "enhancement". If you look at the JIRA article, you will see that it is described as an issue-tracking system in the lead, not as a bug-tracking system. The article Issue tracking system gives the impression that issue tracking systems are mainly used for tracking support tickets. The static view edit

A software bug is an error, flaw, failure or fault in a computer program or system that causes it to produce an incorrect or unexpected result, or to behave in unintended ways. Most bugs arise from defects in a program's source code, its design, or in components and operating systems used by such programs. Defects arise from mistakes, errors, and oversights during the process software development or system deployment. Some bugs arise from the tooling used to create the software, such as compiler defects leading to incorrect code generation. A program that contains a large number of bugs, and/or bugs that seriously interfere with its functionality, is said to be buggy (defective).

All serious software developers know in their heart of hearts that the word "bug" is an industry-standard euphemism, and always has been. I was joking with my wife that Freud also had a theory of software defects, but considered it too contentious to discuss in public. The reason "bug" is a euphemism is that it invokes two metaphorical frames: The best laid schemes o' Mice an' Men, / Gang aft agley, and Whac-a-Mole anthill culture, which somehow software developers like to imagine (ego defense) as some kind of glorious OODA loop, notwithstanding the curse of dimensionality (note how the machine learning people actually talk about the CoD as a real thing; it sure helps that recurrent neural network bypass about what actually amounts to "correct" (the ultimate get-out-of-jail-free card for the fragile ego).

Those who actually take eliminating defects seriously (validation and proof communities) prefer the term "defect" over "bug". To put this on a highly reductive footing: functional programming has defects (a steady trickle), while imperative programming has bugs (in copious flow).

In my mind, contrary to the founding metaphor bugs mainly arise from defects (no, I'm including in the category of software defects neither lack of a better screen door, nor an adhesive duck deficiency). To my mind, a bug is a defect on the hoof. In imperative programming, one engages in wild, out-of-control hay rides around the haystack full of needles far more often than in functional programming (whereas in functional programming, one declares at mid-morning coffee break, "well, that's a wrap for program correctness; damn shame about the wall clock").

I realize this page is called "software bug", but we all know (since Brazil at least) that this is largely a historical in-joke. These were always defects, in the same way that proofs have flaws, but not bugs (some of these 'flaws' persisted for centuries, for example, as mathematicians were slow to realize that Euclidean geometry had come to a permanent fork in the road; physics is even more prone to bugs/defects/flaws that are closer to wailing walls than any of the aforementioned terms—see renormalization and quantum gravity). If we were going to map software engineering onto geometry, defects would be the Euclidean geometry, and bugs would be the non-Euclidean geometry (ascendance of the "bug" terminology notwithstanding).

So my larger point is that we shouldn't let an accidental nomenclature shift the balance of this article more than necessary. The defect exists in the artifact, and the bug exists in the system of the artefact (whether this is the system of its specification, the system of its construction, or the system of its subsequent behaviour). The vast majority of bugs arise from tangible defects of workmanship.

I noodled on the lead thinking I could address this quickly, but then I thought I didn't want to post that change live, so I decided instead to abandon my noodle to the talk page of posterity.

"Hardware bug" redirect page edit

The redirect was created when the world (or at least Wikipedia) was still young. For all I can remember, this page may have been titled something like "Bug (Computer)" at the time in which case the redirect would have made perfect sense. (And if that's so, then renaming this page effectively created a bug. ;-) ) In any case, if anyone wanted to write a "Hardware bug" article, I wouldn't object but such an article ought to have a much larger scope than just computers/IT. The questions are, first, when most people think of a "computer" bug, do think of it as a software bug or a hardware bug? I don't have any metrics to help answer that question, but I don't think of a computer bug as a hardware one. ::::: Second, we currently don't even have hardware bugs in here, although some of the "well-known bugs" and the bugs in culture are hardware-related. I see "computer bug" as covering both hardware and software bugs. The article can point to the software bug page, and also cover hardware bugs until there's enough material to warrant a separate hardware bug article. Otherwise, if you want hardware and software bugs all on the same page, let's rename this one as "Computer bug" and add the beginning of a section on hardware bugs. In the haste to be pedantic about hardware and software, what is being lost is the fact that the hardware/software distinction isn't nearly as old as the computer, and that some of the early examples that are being deleted because they are "hardware bugs" involved early computers that were programmed by rewiring the hardware.

Plus, and I shouldn't have to explain this, when your change is reverted, you need to leave it alone and discuss it on the article talk page. Hitting the revert button and then opening up the discussion is disruptive behavior that can result in a block. When in doubt leave the page the way it was before the content dispute. Good thing this article is on my watchlist! This is an odd question to ask. If it's written out in text, it's software. Is it used to generate hardware, like VHDL or something? Probably. But that's not the same thing. Korny O'Near (talk) 17:13, 2 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
It is both. It is a software program that a person wrote, fed into a VHDL compiler (Which is a dataflow programming language), which eventually instructed a wafer fab to produce hardware. A similar example is a numerical control program that tells machine tools how to make hardware.
My point is that you claim that if it involves moving around wires, it's hardware and not software, and thus that many early computers (See Plugboard#Early computers) had no software. This is demonstrably untrue. Consider three computers: Computer A is programmed with a plugboard. Computer B is programmed by a paper tape which makes the exact same connections that the plugboard made. Computer C is programmed with a C program that controls relays that makes the exact same connections that the plugboard made. Clearly all three are programmable, and in all three cases the pattern of connections is software.
In your haste to be pedantic about hardware and software, you have lost sight of the fact that the hardware/software distinction isn't nearly as old as the computer is and that some of the early examples that are being deleted are from an era where there was no such distinction. --Guy Macon (talk) 17:42, 2 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes, there are ways to do the same thing in both hardware and software, but that doesn't make the distinction between them any less clear. If you feel strongly about this, I suggest your first step should be modifying the software article, which currently defines software as "a collection of data or computer instructions that tell the computer how to work". Verifiablity is not the same as must be referenced edit

WP:V does not state that everything must have a reference. It states that "other people using the encyclopedia can check that the information comes from a reliable source". That is followed up with "All material in Wikipedia mainspace, including everything in articles, lists and captions, must be verifiable. All quotations, and any material whose verifiability has been challenged or is likely to be challenged, must include an inline citation that directly supports the material. Any material that needs a source but does not have one may be removed. Please immediately remove contentious material about living people that is unsourced or poorly sourced." No need. If the 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary quotes the Pall Mall Gazette of 11 March 1889 as saying
"Mr. Edison, I was informed, had been up the two previous nights discovering 'a bug' in his phonograph - an expression for solving a difficulty, and implying that some imaginary insect has secreted itself inside and is causing all the trouble."

Shorter description edit

Recently, I boldly changed the article's WP:Short description, with the edit summary Shorten short description; purpose is to distinguish, not precisely define it, *as short as possible* per guidelines.. Walter Görlitz then reverted it, with the edit summary it should not be intentionally wrong or misleading though So, per WP:BRD, let's now discuss. (Note I am ignoring the part about my being intentionally wrong or misleading. I'm sure it wasn't meant that way.)

Here are the two short descriptions involved.

SD1: Error, flaw, failure, or fault in a computer program or system that produces an incorrect or unexpected result, or causes it to behave in unintended ways (>140 characters)
SD2: Flaw in a computer program (<40 characters)

SD1 is the original short description, and remains the status quo during this BRD. SD2 is my bold change. (Additional versions can be proposed in this discussion; I suggest using the same "SD#" format for consistency and ease of reference in this discussion.)

(Note that the short description system for WP articles is fairly new. I encourage editors interested in them to review its guidelines, which have gone through considerable updates since short descriptions were introduced, and continues to evolve. I myself found discovered some recent changes while creating this comment.)

For my take on the two SDs, here's my emphasis within the first six points of the guideline for SD contents:

1. The short description may be used for several purposes, including as disambiguation in searches and as an annotation in outline articles.
2. The short description should be brief. A target of 40 characters has been suggested, but this can be exceeded when necessary.
3. The short description should focus on distinguishing the subject from ones with similar titles.
4. The short description should not attempt to precisely define the subject.
5. The short description will be the first point of contact for many readers, so it should be readily comprehensible.
6. Because some applications may abbreviate longer descriptions, the most important identifying information should be placed first.

Guide point 2: SD1 exceeds the recommended length by over 100 characters; SD2 doesn't.

Guide point 3 and 4: SD1 specifically attempts to precisely define the subject, contrary to the guide, by simply and literally copying the whole first sentence of the article. SD2 focuses on distinguishing the subject from other titles with "software" or "bug" in their name or other articles having similar key terms in the body.

Guide point 6: When SD1 is abbreviated to about 40 characters, it becomes Error, flaw, failure, or fault in a... followed by some part of the word computer depending on where it's chopped off. This would make the short description that appears incorrect, associating the subject with some fragment of "computer" instead of "computer program". SD2 is an actual short description, so won't suffer this fate.

As to SD2 being "wrong or misleading", I'm at a loss to see how. It could reasonably be argued that it is less precise, but I don't even see that. (And precision isn't a goal of an SD anyway.)

Yes. I already started the discussion. The short description you changed it to was simply wrong because an error is different than a flaw, which are both different from a failure and all are different from a fault. They are technical terms and laid-out in standards. To simply reduce a bug to one possible class is like changing the short description of vehicles to airplanes alone, ignoring cars, vans, bicycles, boats, ships and other classes of vehicles.
The 100 character length is a recommendation, not a rule. Even if it were a rule, ignore all rules could apply.

First, in general, I think it would be easier to reach consensus here if we frame our comments on how we can best serve the target audience, a reader unfamiliar with this subject. We all assume that's what motivates all editors here.
Second, please note the guide does not say 100 characters -- it's 40 characters.
"Short" is the name of the game in short description. There are very few article subjects you can define in 40 characters. That's why the guide says not to define it. Even if it were possible, it's generally less helpful to use the precise definition, because technical words and jargon are specifically poor at helping readers unfamiliar with the subject know which article they want. It's the difference between saying "go see Johnathon Alphonse McGuy" (a precise definition, but useless when you don't know that man) and "see a uniformed person at the door" (usefully distinguishing the unfamiliar man from others). A terse distinction for readers unfamiliar with the subject is the raison d'etre of the short description. If an SD doesn't do that, it's a complete failure. If we can't come up with something that works, SDs end up defaulting to simply naming the subject's next-level-up more general subject, as just "Chemical" or "Wikipedia list article" are often used for SDs. In the case for this article, we'd have to go with "Programming term" or some such. I really think we can do better, though.
There's a good deal of overlap in the terms "Error, flaw, failure, or fault". Yes, one could concoct a couple paragraphs for each to explain the subtle differences each from the others, pointlessly, because none of that helps distinguish the subject of a "bug". The article itself, with unlimited space for text, doesn't make an "error" bug distinct from a "flaw" bug, "failure" bug, or "fault" bug. Why attempt doing so in the SD, where space is so precious? There is little overlap between those terms, that's why they're separate terms.
If you want a short, 40-character description, "A software bug is a bug found in software" works. : ) There's no easy way to create a short definition that is not circular. I found a few online (such as https://www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia/term/software-bug) However, it is difficult without explaining that it could be caused by an error (usually at the system level), a flaw in the code, a failure that is encountered and not handled or a fault at various layers.
While poking around, "error" might the shortest description of all four of them, but definitely not flaw.

'Flaw' isn't quite right, but we can find less-specific wording. It is also important to devote at least some space to the results because that is what separates a bug from other forms of software issues. Maybe 'issue' could be an option? Also according to a lot of different short descriptions I've seen on other articles, brevity has taken priority over pinpoint accuracy. I think: ""Error, flaw, failure, or fault in a computer program or system" or perhaps even ending with program would be better than simply flaw, more accurate and not unduly long. While the consequences are important, they may not be necessary for identifying just the topic of the article. I have not dealt with short descriptions previously and my only edit to this article this year was to remove a Manual of Style problem. That coincidentally strayed from the topic more than necessary, especially because the cited term linked to an article about it. So my suggestion is simply my opinion for what it is worth. Effort invested in bugs edit

I'd like to add the paragraph bellow in the implications. Since I'm involved in the research, I write it here first to see that it is written in objective way. I'll be happy to receive feedback.

Other than the damage caused by bugs, some of their cost is due to the effort invested in fixing them. Lientz and al.[1] showed in 1978 that the median of projects invest 17% of the development effort in bug fixing. Thanks. There were a few problems, but I fixed it a bit. I'm not sure placing the two sections beside each other is correct though. The first is, I assume, metrics from commercial software and the latter is from open-source. Also, the approaches to development and reviewing code is likely different. Thank you for your feedback and help. It is indeed a bit hard to compare. The earlier work is from more than 40 years ago, based on a survey of estimations in 17 projects. A lot can change. However, as far as I know there are no other such estimations in the literature. Since the results are relatively close, they show that bug probability is robust to such drastic changes.   • Support - Inclusion of this material at Software bug#Bug management would definitely improve that article. We definitely don't want to have two copies of this information in the encyclopedia. An argument could be made that we can just link to the Known error article from Software bug but there is no WP:UNDUE issue with merging and I can't think of a good justification for retaining the stand-alone article. I added the "bug triage" equivalent meaning at the Bug management section, and the "known error" meaning at the Software releases sub-section. I have not added the equivalent of "where bugs that may affect customers or clients are told to those clients only." If there is a reliable source, I can add it or Bwrs can. Jay, 'Scrub' is basically unknown. Triage is a bit better, but still isn't anywhere near as common as 'bug review' or 'bug review meeting', which is probably what most software developers who engage in that process would call it. We can add any number of common English words before or after 'bug' and get google hits, that doesn't mean that these combinations necessarily form a distinct term that we need to define in this article. Management teams in all sorts of fields hold regular meetings to decide on short term priorities, there is not really anything unique about this process when it comes to fixing bugs. In common usage, triages occur to assess new bugs while reviews occur later in a development cycle, although they can be used for the initial stage as well. Disgusting word edit
