Merge Star Campus

Separate article for a newspaper supplement is overkill. Please help improve the article on the main newspaper The Daily Star (Bangladesh) by adding appropriate subsections. Arman Aziz 08:54, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Well... I have a plan to prepare articles on different sections of The Daily Star (Bangladesh) individually (with a template on each of them) and Star Campus is one of my first attempts there. But in order to do this, I think parent article should be in a nice shape which is missing here. That's why I do agree with this merger but in future I will definitely go for expanding this parent article into different sub articles. Niaz^{(Talk • Contribs)} 02:53, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Niaz, your enthusiasm is much appreciated. But do you really think separate articles on different sections of the same newspaper would be encyclopedic? We have a lot to do including creation of articles on most of the major newspapers in Bangladesh. Let's focus our energy where there is a real need. If you want to achieve something meaningful for this topic, why not we try to improve this article on the main newspaper to GA or even FA status? We can have different section names redirecting to the main article. If you'd like to work on templates, a template for "Newspapers in Bangladesh" could be much more useful. Can I second that? Well, in fact, as soon as we've gathered together the facts we'd pretty much figure out if there's sufficient material for an encyclopedic article or not. It is not entirely an impossibility that a supplement is taken as notable enough to become an article on its own. But, that's kind of long shot. It is possibly much easier to get the mother article to a GA status. There is much global concern about the credibility of Wikipedia, and that makes the emphasis on quality over quantity a mighty important task. Cheers. Niaz, I agree to the point you are trying to make. If any article on a notable topic goes beyond 32K+ and still there is more quality content to add, it makes sense to create new articles on the subsections, even when notability of subsections on stand-alone basis may be questionable. The same principle should apply for any university department or sub-sections of a newspaper. Arman Aziz 06:35, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

A vexing conundrum

What is a generic description of newspaper administration/management that would fit almost any newspaper in the world doing in the "Administration" section? Aditya^{(talk • contribs)} 02:50, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

The section gives adequate reference. If you can improve, please do. I didn't know almost all newspapers in the world are run by 6-member boards, or that for all newspapers in the world publisher and editor is the same person. The management of the newspaper is headed by the Managing Editor responsible for supervising the whole management including the accounts, production, store and establishment units. The chief reporter is responsible for supervising the whole reporting team, the key unit of the newspaper. News Editor heads the news section that comprise of news editors and sub-editors.

Once again, if this looks generic, please try to make this specific by adding details. Or more conveniently you may consider inserting a tag "This section of article looks generic, some editor can help by making this specific". Merger proposal (Mahfuz Anam)

I do not agree with merging Mahfuz Anam into The Daily Star (Bangladesh). Mahfuz Anam is the current Chairperson for Asia News Network, he is a media expert for UNESCO and runs an NGO (Freedom Foundation). He is definitely a notable personality on his own right and deserves a stand alone article. I agree the current article is not rich enough, but there is definitely a scope to improve it to a complete article. Arman ^(Talk) 01:38, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Criticism of the paper

I've reinserted the short section on criticisms of the paper, specifying that the criticism is with regards to the reporting on the ICT (and not necessarily in general), and adding a further reference. David Bergman, who authored the blog post reference has worked for a few different English language papers in Bangladesh, including the Daily Star itself, and is an acclaimed journalist, so according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_self-published_blogs the reference may be included here. Also, the allegation that the US embassy had to intervene to remove an offending article is significant enough to deserve mention here. Abbasfirnas887 (talk) 00:54, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
