LGBT Issues edit

Martin first became involved in LGBT issues following the 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting, stating, he was "disappointed that more Catholic leaders did not offer support to the LGBT community" in the aftermath of the shooting. Martin initiated a series of lectures on how the Church could better minister to LGBT Catholics, and subsequently wrote a book, Building a Bridge (2017),[1] based on his lecture series.

Martin's book received enthusiastic praise and strong criticism. The book was hailed by several prelates, including Bishop Robert McElroy, Cardinals Kevin Farrell and Joseph Tobin[2][3] On the other hand, in a critique of the book, Cardinal Robert Sarah described Martin as "one of the most outspoken critics of the church’s message with regard to sexuality".[4][3][5] In 2018, Cardinal Raymond Burke stated that Martin has "an 'open' and wrong position on homosexuality".[6][7].

In 2019, Martin spoke out against the public denial of Holy Communion to Joe Biden based on Biden's support for abortion rights. Martin also objected to the denial of Holy Communion to a woman engaged in a same-sex marriage.[8][9]
