1854−1993 Second-level award for non-commissioned personnel of the armed forces for gallantry in the face of the enemy on land. Originally restricted to the army, members of the Royal Naval Division were eligible from 1916 and other services from 1942. Indian Army soldiers were never eligible. This was the oldest British decoration awarded solely for gallantry. It was last awarded by Australia in 1972 and by New Zealand in 1970.

  1. ^ Naval and Royal Marines personnel had to have served for at least 28 days. Army personnel had to have served overseas for at least 28 days (including garrison duty in India and other such non-war zones). Air force personnel had to have served for at least 28 days, either overseas, or having seen combat while based in the United Kingdom, or ferried aircraft to Europe or served aboard a naval vessel. Merchant Service personnel had to have served at sea for at least six months or made at least one voyage through a danger zone. Members of women's services (including military nursing services) were eligible on the same terms. Civilian personnel serving on naval vessels were eligible on the same terms as naval personnel. VAD, Red Cross, St John's Ambulance and similar civilian medical personnel were eligible on the same terms as army personnel, as were members of civilian labour and transport corps. Marine pilots, fishermen, lightship and cable ship crews and other coastal personnel were eligible on the same terms as Merchant Service personnel. Those who were killed or wounded by enemy action or taken prisoner before they had served 28 days were also eligible.
