Hello, @AllyD:! I noticed your warning about posting my articles on Hutchison China Meditech and Hutchison MediPharma being a COI (Conflict of Interest). Please don't misinterpret my intentions!!! I am not hired or paid by the either companies to post these articles. I am merely a student who has gained an interest in the growing pharmaceutical industry in China. I decided to post articles of Hutchison China Meditech ans well as Hutchison MediPharma purely out of the my own interest. I believe that Hutchison China Meditech may very well be on the rise to being a major player in the Chinese pharmaceutical industry, and I merely wish that others interested in this company for the same or other reasons have access to a wikipedia page containing public information regarding the company. I hope that my wikipedia page will prove to be a more convenient option of learning about Hutchison China Meditech.

Tea Nguyen edit

Hi. Thanks for your review and suggestions. I also notice that qTrace and qTest eXplorer should be merged but as a new wiki user I'm not too sure how to do it. For the qTest eXplorer page it is a renamed product so I feel it should be mentioned since qTrace no longer exists, yet the secondary sources for qTest eXplorer are not that many. Any suggestions on how can I re-write (or merge) the two articles and remove those tags?

For the proposed deletion of qTest. It's a major product of a company, there are lots of products in same category that have wiki pages, with length at that short, so I don't know why qTest got restricted. I tried to include only historic data and relevant information that someone of interest would want to know about qTest. I also tried to include some secondary sources as possible... Not too sure how to best write article as such since I made no attempt of advertising or so...

It will be much appreciated to let me know. Thank you. Tea Nguyen (talk) 3:30, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

Liberty League edit

It definitely is notable. It's been mentioned in national press a number of times...

Hi AllyD, I created the page, Onarbor, and would like to fix it such that it will be acceptable to be published on Wikipedia. Onarbor.com is my website and company. Our business model is based off of Kickstarter that is why I used Kickstarter's wiki page as a guide to developing our wiki page. I apologize for cutting and pasting kickstarter's page in order to create Onarbor's page. I took a break from finishing Onarbor's page before removing the blatant copyrighting without realizing that Wikipedia editors would delete it so quickly before I had a chance to finalize it. My sincere apologies, this is the 1st wikipedia page I've ever created. I've re-submitted the Onarbor page to address the copyrighting. I've removed all references that were Kickstarter-specific and changed the sentence-structure and wording to be unique to Onarbor. Hopefully this will be more in line with Wikipedia's policies. Again, I'm truly sorry about this. Thank you,

Tim Peterson User:Trpeters1

Interview invitation from a Wikipedia researcher in University of Minnesota edit

Hello AllyD,

I am Bowen Yu, a Ph.D. student from GroupLens Research at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. Currently, we are undertaking a study about turnover (editors leaving and joining) in WikiProjects within Wikipedia. We are trying to understand the effects of member turnovers in the WikiProject group, in terms of the group performance and member interaction, with a purpose of learning how to build successful online communities in future. More details about our project can be found on this meta-wiki page.

I would like to invite you for an interview if you are interested in our study and willing to share your experience with us. The interview will be about 30 - 45 minutes via either Skype or Google Hangout. You will receive a $10 gift card as compensation afterwards.

Please reach me at bowen@cs.umn.edu if you are interested or have any questions.

Thank you,

Bowen

Maintenance template removal edit

Dear AllyD, thank you for the welcoming message. I used to edit and improve Wikipedia pages back in 2013,2014 and 2015. Now, I am back for my favourite hobby. Looking forward to improving more and more pages. I have read what is needed to be done, but unfortunately, cannot see why you put this. Could you be more specific? I have gone through it before deleting the Maintenance template. Checked for grammatical and other mistakes. Thank you for understanding.

New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022 edit

Hello AllyD,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • If you're interested in instant messaging and chat rooms, please join us on the New Page Patrol Discord, where you can ask for help and live chat with other patrollers.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.
  • To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023 edit

Hello AllyD,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • There is live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.
  • To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

New Page Patrol – May 2023 Backlog Drive edit

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023 edit

Hello AllyD,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

New pages patrol newsletter edit

Hello AllyD,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

November Articles for creation backlog drive edit

Hello AllyD:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 2000 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:23, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

How to upload my photo please ? --Stacey Murchison (talk) 15:30, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Stacey Murchison, there is an Upload Wizard at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard After the initial drag'n'drop of the photo, it has a few further stages- most importantly, for licensing the imageand providing a description, then some nice-to-have but less immediately essential stages about Metadata / categorisation. There is also a tutorial at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:First_steps/Contributing AllyD (talk) 16:14, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message edit

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:22, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Question from Ianis Hagi (09:20, 6 December 2023) edit

Hello, I have a question. How do you make your own Wikipedia page for football? --Ianis Hagi (talk) 09:20, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Ianis Hagi:, It is important to consider the notability criteria before creating a page on an individual footballer, a club, a competition, etc. It is essential to have a reference to at least one item of coverage which is about the person or team. (See also Help:Referencing for beginners on this.) AllyD (talk) 10:18, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Question from Natalie Astrid (10:41, 10 December 2023) edit

Can i write an article about an upcoming artist?? --Natalie Astrid (talk) 10:41, 10 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Natalie Astrid, without knowing whether this artist works in music, visual art, or whatever, I would say this is very awkward and likely to be disappointed. The notability criteria are stringent, especially I would say in the visual arts where institutional exhibition/collection is needed, but also for musicians. Emerging artists are unlikely to have obtained the required extent of attention from others. AllyD (talk) 12:02, 10 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Question from Peterconstant (13:12, 2 January 2024) edit

Hi Ally, I am a undergrad student looking to get into research and I think Wikipedia would be the best way to apply my knowledge of politics in California to Wikipedia's database. What are some of the best resources to get started? --Peterconstant (talk) 13:12, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Browsing the articles under Category:Politics of California could be a good starting point: looking for what exists in articles there, getting familiar with the article structures there, and then when you see something that you think is poorly-expressed or is a typo, gradually getting into making fixes. One step up from that is when you see something missing or not quite right, then go looking for a reliable source to add referenced text.
And a further step is when you decide to create a new article. It is well worth paying close attention to WP:POLITICIAN, especially the sentence underneath the bullet points. It is not uncommon for a new editor to create an article about, say, a local party official and then feel offended when it is deleted. AllyD (talk) 13:54, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Brutallygolden (21:56, 2 January 2024) edit

Hi! I’ve just joined to replace a photo of a celebrity’s wikipedia page with a photo I took instead of their current one, which is quite old. Can I do this on my phone or do I have to do it on Laptop? Do you have any advice? Thank you! --Brutallygolden (talk) 21:56, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm... Whenever I upload an image to Commons (the Upload Wizard is here) I use the Laptop browser. I have never tried uploading directly from the phone: it should work ok (probably a bit cramped on the layout), though I have recollections of reading somewhere that the mobile functionality for Commons is a bit limited, so loading from Laptop may be a better start. Hi how can i add a profile picture please? --SawyerSharbino (talk) 08:10, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

From your Talk page, I note there was a previous Userpage, deleted as inappropriate. Please read WP:USERPAGE. It is worth noting that a user page is about providing information useful for one's involvement in building the encyclopaedia, i.e. editing and creating pages of encyclopaedic content; profile photos - common on social media - rarely play a significant role in that. Question from Historybuff4life4health (19:42, 17 January 2024) edit

Hi, I'm new to editing on Wikipedia. I've recently started to contribute to article about the late Eugene Borza, an American professor who wrote many books on the Macedonian question. When I first encountered the article, it selectively cherry-picked a quote from Borza's essay "Macedonian Redux" (which can be found here http://marpedia.blogspot.com/2020/11/macedonia-redux-and-essay-by-eugene-n.html) in order to imply that Borza thought that only modern Macedonians had no link to the Macedonians of antiquity. In fact, Borza thought that none of the modern nations in the Balkans could establish a link with the Macedonians of antiquity, and I provided additional quotes and analysis to support this case. I am frustrated by another editor who seems to be engaging in an edit war with me because they insist on promoting a politically-biased narrative. How can I make sure that the article is not misrepresented and that quotes aren't taken out of context for political purposes? Thank you --Historybuff4life4health (talk) 19:42, 17 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Adandr25 on John Hagedorn (05:16, 30 January 2024) edit

Hello,

Professor Hagedorn was a dear friend of mine. He selected me for the LASURI project and as his RA/TA from 2008-2010 at UIC. He studied my family and I. Together, we focused on organized crime alongside Political Corruption. I am a Mafia/Mob Descendant. BSB at UIC is built on my family’s blood. I wrote an Afterward in a book by Charles Hager where I cite Dr. Hagedorn. It is called, ‘Chicago Heights; Little Joe College, the Outfit, and the Fall of Sam Giancana’. I would like to include this book in his Wikipedia page on my behalf. How do I do that? --Adandr25 (talk) 05:16, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Adandr25, I would be wary of adding one's own publications into an article:see WP:SELFCITE. What I would suggest from a look at the John Hagedorn article is that it could benefit from other citations, in particular a page reference to the Mike Davis book mentioned there. Question from PinnHJ (02:41, 6 February 2024) edit

I edited false statements in Taiwan History in Chinese WIKI many times because its editing groups in Taiwan use the propaganda of the domain political party instead of professinal researches. Then they locked my acount ! I am a researcher to study the history of Taiwan's tea economy, ceramic economy and now doing Taiwan architecture history. I have publiched my artichcle in an open-acess journal of the CPME last year. How can I remedy the unprofessional statements from the editing groups in Taiwan? --PinnHJ (talk) 02:41, 6 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

PinnHJ I can't see the edits of the account you have used on other
Wikipedias, so can't trace what may have led to the situation you describe. (Even if I could, I doubt my HSK4 中文 would adequately grasp discussion nuance there.)
Nor do I know what inter-user appeal processes may exist on another Wiki.
I have occasionally seen mention of problems of factional capture on other Wikipedias, but I don't think I have seen remedies for this.
This may be the most awkward and frustrating situation. All I can suggest, from an English Wikipedia perspective, is that one sometimes has to sidestep intractable disputes and find other parts of the overall project which are more encouraging to edits. AllyD (talk) 09:43, 6 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your suggestion. I believe WIKI is a forum to deliver the true information rather than the false propaganda for some political cult. 111.249.231.98 (talk) 12:17, 6 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

How to publish scientific research work on a historic theme? How to put some photos, drawings, and copies of documents? --Jordan Michow (talk) 10:53, 12 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Jordan Michow, photos, drawing and copies of documents that are out of copyright can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Previously published research papers can be used as article references on Wikipedia; unfortunately, research that hasn't already been published elsewhere is more problematic here, because of Wikipedia's policy concerning original research. Question from Kalevad (22:47, 6 March 2024) edit

Hi Ally, I am interested to create new content and not edit. How do I begin my article? --Kalevad (talk) 22:47, 6 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Kalevad, I would always suggest that editing existing article content is the best way for a new contributor to begin. It helps gain familiarity with how things are usually expressed: even simple matters such as paragraphing, date format, etc., but also - crucially - how articles are referenced, this being a requirement. But if you really want to create a new article, then the WP:AFC process will guide you. AllyD (talk) 08:36, 7 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Namady (07:58, 7 March 2024) edit

Hello AllyD, I was looking through the article on Dinghy racing and noticed that there was no mention of the importance of identifying flags from the Race Committee which are used to communicate with boats on the water. Anyone who races HAS to know what the flags displayed mean as there is no other way to communicate with them once they are afloat. There is a link to 'racing rules of sailing' towards the bottom of the article but I feel it's important enough to have a summary in the main headings. What do you think? --Namady (talk) 07:58, 7 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Or perhaps a summary sentence and link slightly further into the article, for example at Dinghy_racing#Racecourse? Anyway, I would suggest that you propose the change that you have in mind by using Add topic in Talk:Dinghy racing, for input from others interested in the topic, so that you agree a consensus. hey man I am overwhelmed by the sheer amount of resources present here i do not know what to do and how to . Do you suggest any easier articles to edit? --Indian times k (talk) 14:48, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Indian times k, I guess there could be two questions here: the how-to and the what-articles? For the how-to, Help:Getting started has useful resources. As to what articles to edit, one way is simply to start slowly and small, by fixing the inevitable typos that you notice while reading articles. Or by working with one page on a topic that you know about - but it is important to supply references for any new facts, etc. that you add to an article. AllyD (talk) 16:48, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
