This is not a newsletter

This is just a tribute.

Anyway. You're getting this note because you've participated in discussion and/or asked for updates to either the Article Feedback Tool or Page Curation. This isn't about either of those things, I'm afraid ;p. We've recently started working on yet another project: Echo, a notifications system to augment the watchlist. There's not much information at the moment, because we're still working out the scope and the concepts, but if you're interested in further updates you can sign up here.

In addition, we'll be holding an office hours session at 21:00 UTC on Wednesday, 14 November in #wikimedia-office - hope to see you all there :). I appreciate it's an annoying time for non-Europeans: if you're interested in chatting about the project but can't make it, give me a shout and I can set up another session if there's enough interest in one particular timezone or a skype call if there isn't. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 11:17, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

GOCE November 2012 copy edit drive update

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

  • Participation: Out of 31 people signed up for this drive so far, 22 have copy-edited at least one article. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive. We have reduced our target group of articles—November and December 2011—by over 50%, and 34 of the the 56 requests made in September and October this year have already been fulfilled. However, the rate of tagging for copy edit has increased, and this month we are just keeping the size of the backlog stable. So, all you copy editors, please do come along and help us!
  • The September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest was won by Baffle gab1978 for his copy edit of Expulsion of the Acadians. Runner up was Gareth Griffith-Jones for his edit of I Could Fall in Love. Congratulations to both.
  • The October 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the discussion and voting stage until midnight November 30 (UTC). You don't have to make a submission to vote!
  • November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the submissions stage until midnight November 30 (UTC), when discussion and voting begin.
  • Seasonal oversight: We had a slight fall from grace in the title of our last newletter, which mentioned the season in the northern hemisphere and thus got it wrong for the southern. Fortunately an observant GOCE member was ready to spring into action to advise us. Thanks! In future we'll stay meteorologically neutral.

GOCE November drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 38 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy-edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. All the barnstars have now been distributed.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing November and December 2011 from the backlog. For the first time since the drives began, the backlog consists only of articles tagged in the current year. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2690 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 56 requests outstanding before November 2012 as well as eight of those made in November.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the October 2012 competition, and prizes have been issued. The November 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The December 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

Coodinator election: The six-month term for our fourth tranche of Guild coordinators will expire at the end of December. Nominations are open for the fifth tranche of coordinators, who will serve from 1 January to 30 June 2013. For complete information, please have a look at the election page.

Welcome Home!

Hi! I see you came back. In the meantime I had to disconnect the internet service at my home due to $problems so that's why I haven't been online or doing anything on Wiki for a while. But I am working again at a place where I can access the net so I should be able to stay in touch pretty frequently. I would like to finish the course. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Talib Haider, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Institute of Business Administration (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hi

I have had my articles rejected because it sounded like a promotion. It was for the company I work for and it is a history of the company and the importance of data or email validation. Our competitor has a very promotional article and their is still up. Can you please look mine over and make some suggestions? My competitor is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strikeiron.

I have tried my best but I am not sure if I have succeeded in making them 100% copyright compliant. Thanks. Quis separabit? 20:02, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi, no problem, but I'm a bit busy at the moment. When I've got some time, I'll gladly cast an eye over them. Pol430 talk to me 20:09, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
Forgot to mention, if you do get the chance to review and/or adjust as needed the above six articles (I added one), four of which are British, if that helps, could you then leave the necessary notations as to compliance, blanking, etc. at my CCI. They are #31, #33, #34, #35, #37 and #38. Thanks. Quis separabit? 17:20, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
Funnily enough, I was just looking into this when you messaged me. I have checked the articles and highlighted above the two that still need some work. I have linked to the duplication reports, that should give you the info needed to make the required changes. Best. Pol430 talk to me 17:38, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. I am going to fix Jennifer Hilary, but according to this, Maude Storey is OK, unless I am misreading something. Yours, Quis separabit? 19:54, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
You need to click on 'show details' in the green section of that report. That will reveal the comparison -- article on the left and source on the right. Anything highlighted red in the article section is duplicated in the source. As you can see, there is some substantial duplication. 44% match is too high. Generally, the figure should be no more than 5% for most articles. I realise the tool says 'no violation', but it's wrong. Pol430 talk to me 20:39, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
I redid the Jennifer Hilary article (see the diff here). Hopefully it is OK now. Thanks again. Quis separabit? 20:00, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
I'm actually surprised you cleared Wormald, as I just took a look at it and found some close paraphrasing issues. Compare "she became a member of liverpool regional hospital board and fought to establish a day centre for mentally ill patients discharged from local hospitals" (wiki) to "she became a member of liverpool regional hospital board and was a driving force behind the opening of a day centre for mentally ill patients who had been released from hospitals" (source) as well as "gave older or mature students the opportunity to train as teachers without having to spend time in residential colleges" (wiki) vs. "gave mature students opportunities to be trained as teachers without having to spend time in residential colleges". They aren't terribly bad and were easy to clean, but that's the kind of stuff that has to be caught. As long as things are being cleaned though that's what matters. Wizardman 23:04, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the message Wizardman. Sorry about that, I've rechecked and found all the parts you mention. I think I was relying too much on the (newly discovered by me) CV detector by earwig, which showed only this. I will ensure that in future I don't rely on any single tool too much. I will now recheck my other work. Pol430 talk to me 23:15, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

I've rechecked the others and made a couple of minor edits to Selma Dritz. Hopefully I haven't missed anything else. Pol430 talk to me 23:32, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
Not a problem. I like the duplication detector better than the other one since it shows more clearly what phrases are an issue. Wizardman 02:14, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Jacobrubinovitz

Thank You for creating the page "User:Jacobrubinovitz" , with the edit summary: Preferred location for AfC submissions. However I would like to submit the page for review, and am not sure what to do. I am aware that is an autobiography of a living person, and that may create a problem, but I would like to submit the page, regardless. Any help you can give me will be very apprieciated. I didn't create any pages. I moved the draft of the article you made from your user-page to a different page in, what we call, the AfC namespace. I did this because you had already, correctly, submitted the page for review. As you can see the page Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Jacobrubinovitz now has a big yellow template at the top of it, this means that it is submitted for review. It will be reviewed in due course, you don't need to do anything. You can continue to work on the page if you like. Pol430 talk to me 19:41, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Pee Dee, Anson County, North Carolina

Thank you for your submission, but the subject of this article already exists in Wikipedia. You can find it and improve it at Pee Dee instead.

But, the Pee Dee referred to in your response is in the State of South Carolina. It has nothing to do with the Community of Pee Dee found in the State of North Carlina.

I could see how you may have referred me to

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pee_Dee,_North_Carolina

But again, while this little Community is in North Carolina; it's 30 Miles from the little Community known as Pee Dee in Anson County, North Carolina. So that is why I labeled my article, Pee Dee, Anson County, North Carolina to differentiate it from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pee_Dee,_North_Carolina'

National Rifle Association article neutrality

Hi Pol430, I'm writing to followup on my suggestion that the National Rifle Association (USA) article could be revised to better show a neutral viewpoint. The introductory content, in particular, reflects the viewpoint of the NRA.

For example, the statement that the NRA "advocates for the protection of the Second Amendment" is not a neutral statement. The Second Amendment is not under attack and in need of protection(the US Supreme Court ruling in 2008 establishes the individual right to gun ownership). However this "statement of fact" is what the NRA uses to gain most of its political influence. It mobilizes its members by persuading them that their rights are going to be taken away. A more neutral statement would say "the NRA advocates for the expansion of private access to guns, under the Second Amendment".

In addition, the sentence that describes the NRA as the "oldest continuously operating civil rights organization" is an NRA talking point and should be deleted or rewritten to say "the NRA claims to be..., while this claim is disputed." See this link for discussion and justification for why the NRA is not the oldest: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_oldest_civil_rights_organization_in_the_US

Karstenbarde (talk) 19:18, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

Review feedback: Royalton Kisch article

Thank you very much indeed for saying you'll sort out my references to The Times (of London!) newspaper in the above article in Wiki style. Incredibly kind of you. What happens now - does the article get resubmitted or now automatically passed? Apologies, but I'm a novice here....and I cannot find a version of the article with your edits included (at least, on The Times reference...). Once I find it I'll try to do better and re-edit with line-by-line referencing

Thanks again, very much

The submission is located at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Royalton Kisch, that's the one I edited, you can see my edits in the page history. For the time being I have only fixed up the footnotes. I do not have access to the subject's obituary in The Times and so I am unable to cite that source against the supporting text -- the same problem applies to the other sources. Currently, the submission is not pending review. When you would like to resubmit it there is a link to click on in the big pink template at the top of the page. Once you click that link you will be taken to a pre-loaded edit screen, all you have to do is click save page and the submission will be resubmitted for review. For the present, I would advise you to re-edit the submission and provide some inline references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners for help. Pol430 talk to me 18:33, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Response to message

"Hi, while your efforts to improve this article are very welcome you should be aware that Wikipedia requires that all articles are written from a neutral point of view, contain facts that are verifiable and avoid puffery."

Hi, thanks for the note. Anything in particular cause concern? Andylee3000 (talk) 15:42, 21 December 2012 (UTC)Andy

Hi again! Mostly, a general feeling I get that this article is headed down a path that many corporate articles fall victim to. Namely, that they become generally promotional in nature, contain pseudo-marketing speak and press pieces and serve to be more an extension of the company's web presence, than anything genuinely encyclopedic. The line: "Advertising Age (commonly referred to as Ad Age) published a story recognizing eMaketer as "the authority" in online business." I find problematic because it's a singular opinion from a source that reads like a paid placement rather than an objective review or legitimate piece of journalism -- it is therefore not in-keeping with this community's policy on neutral point of view. Also, the "Coverage" section is largely superfluous; it is not the business of an encyclopedia to publish indiscriminate lists of products and services. As an aside, I would loose the timeline format of the "History" section and rewrite it in continuous prose. Pol430 talk to me 16:47, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Sakyadhita

Hello,

I received a message today about my article, but no specific information: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Lauriebak/sandbox&oldid=527607404

"December 2012

Hello Lauriebak, and welcome to Wikipedia. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here."

I found your name and this talk page at the top of my Sandbox 'History'... the article itself seems to have been deleted. I don't understand and would like to know how to get this page accepted. I was told (by DGG) that it was an important enough organization to include, was given some helpful specific information and I corrected that information. I referenced the paragraph about history (see below) although these references are now not there because this is an older version.

"In the sixth century BCE, the Buddha affirmed that women and men had equal potential to achieve spiritual liberation. This affirmation represented a significant departure from then prevailing views defining women primarily in terms of their reproductive function and capacity for productive labor. The bhikkhuni sangha founded by Mahapajapati, the Buddha’s aunt and foster mother, may have been the first monastic order for nuns in history. Since its inception, Buddhism has acknowledged the equal spiritual potential of women and men. Despite this early egalitarian philosophy, unequal social structures still persist in most contemporary Buddhist cultures. Today, the bhikkhuni sangha survives in only three traditions: Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese. Buddhist institutional structures remain male dominated."

Are you concerned about the 'objectives" section, which comes off of the Sakyadhita website?

I'm trying hard to get this accepted, but with several reviewers and not enough information about corrections, it's a tough slough!

thanks and merry christmas, lauriebakLauriebak (talk) 17:32, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

Hello, I moved your article submission into AfC space so that it could be more easily reviewed. The reviewer who carried out the review after I had done this determined that the submission was a copyright violation and tagged it for deletion. Wikipedia has a strict policy about respecting copyright. If the submission included text copied from somewhere else on the Internet (or any other copyrighted source) then it violates Wikipedia's copyright policy (with few exceptions) and may be summarily deleted by an administrator -- as happened in this case. Strictly speaking your sandbox should have been deleted as well, as this is also a copyright violation -- but the administrator neglected to do this. My advice to you, would be to use the page history of your sandbox to build a new version of the article. You must ensure you do not copy and paste text from another source, or even closely paraphrase it, or the page may get deleted again. Hope this helps Pol430 talk to me 18:23, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

Hello again, Pol,

I've re-submitted the page you had deleted because of copyright infringement. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Lauriebak/sandbox

It occurred to me last night that you might have been referring to the German language version of the page http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sakyadhita part (1st paragraph) of which I used as reference. The rest of the article came from a past president of Sakyadhita and is strictly well established information about dates of meetings and conferences.

Much of Wikipedia is still a mystery to me. I'm at a loss to understand why it's so difficult to get this published, except to say that having more than one reviewer is confusing. So far, I've been accused of publishing "chick garbage" on the chat room; encouraged and helped by DCG when first I submitted; and then summarily deleted with no specific explanation.

I'm willing to revise and am not going to give up unless I get a clear answer as to why this article would appear in the German Wiki, but not in the English Wiki.

Hope you're having a merry holiday and will answer when you can.

thanks much, Lauriebak (talk) 22:14, 24 December 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lauriebak (talkcontribs)

As I have already said: I did not have the page deleted, nor did I carry out the review of it. In fact, I haven't even read the submission. I mearly moved your submission from one page title to another, for various technical reasons too boring to explain to you here. It was another editor who reviewed the submission and it was they who flagged it as a copyright violation (the same person that left a message on your talk page telling you it had been declined). This was then reviewed by an administrator, who agreed it was a copyright violation and deleted it. If you require further clarification on the nature of the violation, I suggest you contact the administrator who deleted it: user Basalisk (talk · contribs).
In answer to your question about the article appearing in the German Wikipedia, English Wikipedia has entirely different inclusion policies to German Wikipedia; and so, simply because an article exists on German Wikipedia does not automatically give it the right to exist on English Wikipedia. I'm not passing judgement on the submission, because I still haven't read it, I'm simply answering your question. Pol430 talk to me 22:23, 25 December 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for helping improve Wikipedia! Pol430 talk to me 16:09, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

1) I still don't find it on the Wiki English site. 2) When I had footnotes (in a section about feminism in Buddhist history), the article was deleted, so I got rid of that section (with inline citations). I don't know what kind of inline citations are appropriate here, since the information is simply a description of the organization. 3) There is an article of the same name on the German Wiki site Why not the English? 4) You refer to 'self-published sources' the only one of which might apply is the video Other than that, these are published outside the auspices of Sakyadhita.

Still hoping we can get this up correctly by January 5 conference in India.

The page may not show up in the Wikipedia search function yet or via Google search because I have only just created it and the servers can take 24hrs to cache the page, the same is true of Google. So, give it 24hrs and you will be able to search for it and get a result, both on Wikipedia and via Google (probably). The page is live in Wikipedia and can be found at Sakyadhita International Association of Buddhist Women. I have also created the page Sakyadhita as a redirect to the former, so both names will work.
  2. The previous page was not deleted because it had inline citations (inline citations are a good thing!), it was deleted (probably) because it contained text that had been copy and pasted from somewhere on the internet. As I have already explained to you in the replies above, I was not involved in the deletion of the former page. In answer to the second point, Wikipedia finds inline citations to any reliable source acceptable (follow the blue link for the policy on reliable sources).
  3. As I say, I have created the title Sakyadhita as a redirect. German Wikipedia and English Wikipedia are entirely different communities, with differing policies and guidelines. Indeed, it is often unhelpful to compare the two sites too closely.
  4. The self-published source referred to is the fifth one down in the references section, attributed to "Tsomo, Karma Lekshe" who, according to the text of the article, was instrumental in the founding of Sakyadhita and can therefore be considered a self-published source. Because of the lack of inline citations it is unclear, to the casual reader, what source supports what text.
  5. You say "Still hoping we can get this up correctly by January 5 conference in India". I am concerned by this remark, the article is not currently "incorrect" and there is no deadline on Wikipedia. Also, nobody owns articles and the only correct version is the one that is verifiable, reliably sourced, notable and written from a neutral point of view; after all, Wikipedia is not a forum for advertising or promotion. ACC request approved

Pol430, thank you for interest in the account creation process. I have verified your Identification [5] and I have approved your request, welcome to the team. You may now access the interface here. Before you do so, please read the account creation guide and our username policy thoroughly to familiarize yourself with the process. You should also join us on IRC #wikipedia-en-accounts connect on where a bot informs us when new account requests come in and to get any advice on requests as well as the mailing list. Please note that we have implemented a policy of zero tolerance on mishandled requests, and that failure to assess correctly will result in suspension. I would like to emphasize that it is not a race to complete a request, and each one should be handled diligently and thoroughly. Currently you are allowed to create up to six accounts per day, although you won't be able to create an account with a similar name to that of another user; these requests are marked "Account Creator Needed" by the bot and "Flagged user needed" on the interface. However, if you reach the limit frequently, you can request the account creator permission at WP:PERM/ACC. Please keep in mind that the ACC tool is a powerful program, and misuse will result in your access being suspended by a tool administrator. Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions. Thank you for participating in the account creation process. Again welcome!

James Goodnight

Hi Pol. You had fulfilled a {{request edit}} for me a while ago (perhaps under my prior username). I try not to pester the same people over and over, so when I saw your comment on DGG's Talk, I thought since I haven't bothered you in a while, I would see if you were interested in looking at my Request Edit for James Goodnight.

Even from a neutral perspective, he has a very positive reputation, so the article may appear promotional at-a-glance. I promise I'm trying to be neutral here ;-)

I noted on the Talk page that this is more of a first draft, as I hope to bring it up to GA eventually. CorporateM (Talk) 18:58, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

Re: Wiki Page of Shiv Pratap Shukla - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiv_Pratap_Shukla

Hi ,

As per review comments for wikipage of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiv_Pratap_Shukla :

1>I have updated office tenures details with correct citations & references. 2>Since Internet was not so much widespread in India in starting of 90's , ministerial post holded during 1991-1992 are not mentioned in any newspaper articles, so as of now accordingly i have removed that offices from infobox content. WIll update those contect when have proper refernces to justofy that. 3>BJP or Bhartiya Janta party is a Democratic party which has huge organisation all over india, it nominates its state presidents as office bearers for poltical activities. When BJP was in Power in Uttar pradesh as mentioned Mr Shukla holded Ministerial postion in state of Uttar Pradesh Goverment. After 2002 BJP is out of power in UP & as of Now BJP has nominated Mr Shukla as its Vice president for State of UP for political activities.

I hope Above explanations suffices.

Yes, the article still needs a substantial copyedit. I will do more on this as and when I have time. Pol430 talk to me 17:20, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

A L Bruce Estates

I notice that you reviewed this article I recently wrote, awarding it a C grade. I found this highly demotivating, as I was in the process of preparing several Malawi-related articles from those not yet prepared.

The commentary days it is for an article that, "fails one or more of the criteria for B-Class. It may have some gaps or missing elements; need editing for clarity, balance or flow; or contain policy violations such as bias or original research." At the moment, I can't see that it has any gaps of contains any policy violations, and your list of articles does not suggest any particular Central African expertise, do I can only assume that you are referring to the middle part, "...need editing for clarity, balance or flow;".

As by implication your grade seems to endorse this view, could you please indicate how (in your opinion) the article may "...need editing for clarity, balance or flow;"?

Shscoulsdon (talk) 17:00, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

I've re-graded it to B class. On reflection, I should have done that to begin with; the only reason I did not is because the article's lead section is too short, and does not adequately summarize the contents. Having a lead section is one of the B class criteria and any other article on English Wikipedia would be expected to have a lead section that complies with WP:LEAD. However, at AfC it is generally expected that newly created articles are not held to quite such stringent standards; I should have remembered this. Please accept my apologies and continue to enjoy editing Wikipedia. Best Pol430 talk to me 17:18, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

Many thanks - I will look at WP:LEAD and try to produce something that conforms to its standards shortly.

Happy New Year

Disambiguation link notification for January 1

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Thomas Keith (soldier), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Scottish (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Article status

Hello Pol430 and Happy New Year! I am inquiring about article for creation: Yes! Golf. I don't know if the article has again been rejected or if it is still in the review queue. Sorry for asking such a newb question, just seeking the current status.

Thanks! X-15a2 (talk) 18:28, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi! It's still in the review que. When you re-submit the new template ends up at the bottom of the page (due to technical limitations in the software). We have a Robot that should automatically move the new yellow template to the top of the page, to make it more clear that the re-submit worked. But the Robot often goes AWOL :) The old red templates are left in place for auditing purposes. I will take another look at this one at some point this evening if I have time. Pol430 talk to me 18:34, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanation, interesting and appreciated. There's so much to learn about all this and I appreciate the information! X-15a2 (talk) 19:54, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

As promised I've reviewed the submission again. Unfortunately, it does not appear the subject meets the inclusion guidelines. I have left a more detailed explanation on the submission page. I'm glad you are finding Wikipedia interesting and I'm sorry that your submission cannot be accepted at this time. I understand how disappointing this can be. If you would like to become more involved in Wikipedia, I run an adoption school to help new editors learn more about Wikipedia in a structured fashion. You can find details at User:Pol430/Adoption. Just let me know if you are interested. Pol430 talk to me 20:19, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article.

Page Curation update

Hey all :). We've just deployed another set of features for Page Curation. They include flyouts from the icons in Special:NewPagesFeed, showing who reviewed an article and when, a listing of this in the "info" flyout, and a general re-jigging of the info flyout - we've also fixed the weird bug with page_titles_having_underscores_instead_of_spaces in messages sent to talkpages, and introduced CSD logging! As always, these features will need some work - but any feedback would be most welcome.

James Anderton AFC

Hi I didn't know my way round this and ended up putting stuff on the help desk where I found Huon to be unhelpful and even rude. I want to change reviewer from him as I have lost confidence. Please help.Nditon (talk) 08:02, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Having worked alongside Huon for a significant amount of time, I have always found him to be a very patient and helpful editor. I think the extended dialogue at the help desk is more a misunderstanding than anything sinister. Also, I would strongly council you against passing comment on individual editors motives or personal traits. Wikipedia has a policy of no personal attacks which is rigorously enforced. It's worth mentioning that WIkipedia is a community of volunteers and no one has to do anything if they don't want to. Back to the matter at hand: I seem to recall dealing with another submission about an RAF officer that we could find very few references on, but he had a DFC and bar, I think, and had been more extensively written about in other publications. As a British editor who once served in the RAF, I understand the significance of the AFC as an award. With this in mind, I have checked in our notability discussion archives to see if Anderton's award of the AFC makes him notable per point 1 of WP:ANYBIO. I found this thread, which suggests there is no consensus that he is automatically notable because of his AFC. Due to the absence of significant coverage of Anderton, in other reliable sources, I don't think this article would survive if it were nominated for deletion and that is why two other reviewers have declined to create it. I'm sorry this has been a disappointing exercise for you, but without more reliable sources to evidence his notability, I'm not sure there is much more we can do with this submission. Pol430 talk to me 18:22, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments and I'm on the case and I am hopeful that I will have further relevant material and references shortly. I readily accept what you say about volunteers and I would also disapprove of personal attacks in either direction. I also think we should move on and I hope to submit further references shortly. I have located stuff in a local newspaper and the National Records office on top of the references I have already supplied. I haven't yet submitted the article for publication as I thought I was doing the sensible thing putting it in Sandbox asking for help before I did so. I'm heartened that you will be familiar with RAF issues and on the AFC and I'm taking the lack of consensus on automatic notability as a reasonably positive point. I would welcome you further help when I have colllated the further referencesNditon (talk) 19:56, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I would be happy to assist further if you manage to get your hands on more reference material. What we need really, is stuff that discusses Anderton by name and in reasonable detail. I note he was involved in the 1000 bomber formations during WWII. If you can track down more references that cover this aspect that would be a good starting point. The submission at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/James Anderton (RAF Officer) award of AFComitted frm list will stay where it is, so don't worry about it being deleted or anything. Just expand and add to that page rather than create a new sandbox. Good luck! Pol430 talk to me 20:14, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks - I'm very grateful. Will be back when stuff received in the post. Per ardua ad astra!!Nditon (talk) 23:13, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Hello again Pol. I have revised the article again with loads more references and I'd be grateful for your comments. I assume you can find the draft article?Nditon (talk) 14:01, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

I've tries to make some links to other articles work ( I know they are on there] but I cant as they keep coming out in red so I've given up pending your help!Nditon (talk) 14:53, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

I've left a comment on the submission. I'm sure you can address the point I raise and when this has been done I will be in a position to accept it. Don't worry about the internal links, I can help you with that. Pol430 talk to me 16:32, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks very much. Headlines inserted. I've also added "AFC" to his headline name to distinguish him from James Anderton former Chief Constable of Manchester - no relation. If that's not correct please advise- and again many thanks. PS I have also added more refereneces to the Syl Anderton article - and I will put the headlines in there as well now.Nditon (talk) 16:52, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

PS Can James now go in the AFC holders list?Nditon (talk) 17:02, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Accepted the article is now live. And because of that, he now shows up in the AFC holders category. Pol430 talk to me 19:13, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
