Shultz tables

Hi. :) Got a strange one at Shultz tables. OTRS received a letter this week offering to verify permission for this article, which you had nominated for AfD on various concerns but which was speedily deleted under G12 as a copyright violation. I've restored it with the copyvio template pending the satisfactory completion of the process, but was wondering how you'd like to handle the AfD if permission comes through. (If it doesn't, the article will be re-deleted as a copyvio, but from the first letter we received I expect that it will.) I see no point in initiating another AfD right away, or until the OTRS matter is closed. Let me know when that happens.

I must also say that, respectfully, even though you live 10 minutes away from St-Eustache does not negate the fact that this school exists and has since 1986. Private ones, yes. The site you mentioned above will not do. What I mean by "third-party reliable source" is something where the school in question cannot make or order any changes without involving an attorney in the process. It doesn't need to be online. You can still cite it by using the {{cite news}} template and filling in the blanks. Please note that the title parameter is the only mandatory one, as there are often parameters whose value is unavailable, or in some cases inapplicable. Jean-Louis Bergeret

Hi Blanchardb,

Sorry to bother you but I could do with some advice and am not really sure where to ask. I translated an article marked as Rough Translation: Jean-Louis Bergeret (actually it was a straight machine translation). Apart from a bit of confusion in the middle para, It is OK I think as far as it goes, but it is a straight translation from the French article given in the external link at the foot of the page. How does this impact on copyvio, since the text itself obviously is not a copy in the sense none of those words are in the original, but it is a straight translation therefrom?

(Also if you can sort out my confusion with Ménage, I've left why I am puzzled on the article's talk page. It might be obvious to you, but this French habit of writing rather long sentences with loads of subclauses does confuse this poor Englishman sometimes.)

I appreciate you are busy but if you could quickly cast your eye to advise, I will act on whatever you deem best.

Well, I see that after posting this you have expanded the article way beyond what the French Wikipedia says, so I believe the whole issue is moot. Actually, the guidelines we pointed to you were notability guidelines. Which means to say that the problem isn't with the article itself, but with the chosen topic. Notability guidelines are there to let you decide whether or not you should even start an article, and not how that article should be written. Those all-caps were the reference's authors and the name of the publication. You also reverted ALL of my edits, not just the ones with all caps. (The reason why they were in all caps was because I copied and pasted from the reference; I hadn't gotten around to fixing it.) Were they other issues? E.g. why you have a problem with putting a list of genera in the emisinae page and why did you delete my information on the total number of genera and species in the subfamily? Dax Landes High School

Thanks for PRODding this. I hope you appreciate it's not from laziness that I don't PROD it myself, but once it appears on PNT I want another pair of eyes to decide rather than me. I found 0 on Google or in e.g. French Wikipédia but others may be able to where I hadn't, so I think safest to leave the decision to others. For the same reason I did not move it to "cleanup" since it is just makework to do so.

I won't say this for every article I do this way (i.e. translate to show how useless it is) but I hope you appreciate that there is a reason for my leaving it this way rather than PRODding ot SPEEDYing it myself. If you have a better idea of how to leave an audit trail, I should be glad to hear it. So, I am just saying it once in this rather longwinded way in case you agree it is useful to do it this way (for articles that are short almost to the extent of nonexistence) or disagree and think I am just being a pain in the arse. I know you are not the only "manager" of PNT though one of the most active, but it seems a very effective page of last resort.

By the way I put a message on the user's talk page (as he had nominated three and seems quite the deletionist, but very much a good faith one) saying why did you bother when, even not speaking French, Spanish or Armenian, you could see that at least two out of three of these articles were entirely useless? But as an inclusionist I don't want to scare him away from PNT if he is at all doubtful – and he replied saying sorry first time I used PNT did I do something wrong (reply: not at all, and as he is a deletionist or exclusionist it seems he does at least do his homework first to try to find it etc) and that the Armenian which he had Google Translated or something like that did seem worth a look at by someone on PNT (do we have any active Armenians?).

I translated the first para of the Spanish (Guatemalan) Loteria santa lucia for same reason; my Spanish is very rusty but I was hoping at least it might be worth it for a quick decision is it worth translating the ref (or, rather, linking it etc etc etc since the article is short and very easy to do). My main concern there is actually the name of the lottery, since I cannot find it on Google anywhere and Santa Lucia is such a common place name that it could be bloody anywhere or perhaps even should be translated St Lucy Lottery.

On a technical point, the User:NeilN seemed to have subst the PNT template into the articles, where from my experience I thought they were just transcluded. Now, he puzzled this when I queried it (see User_talk:NeilN#Dax_Landes_High_School as he said he had followed what it said to say, and I am a little confused myself as it seems he is right, it says to subst it. But I have not seen it subst before, at least I think not, but lately I have been working with my gf User:Monkap on Hungarian articles that have not had to be rescued from PNT so perhaps my memory is faulty. A nudge yes or no would be handy.

Sorry to make this longer, and if you want to move it to PNT talk I've no objection, but it is a bit of a mish-mash of user talk and page talk. i.e. I can't make my mind up at all.

As for getting an article about your company on Wikipedia, I don't think we're on the same wavelength when it comes to the definition of notability. Press releases are released by the subject, and by that virtue alone they cannot be used to establish the subject's notability. So is, in fact, the subject's own website and any source that was written or commissioned by the subject. So it boils down to this question: is there, anywhere, an article about your company in which the company was in no way involved in its creation and dissemination? If the answer to that question is no, then by our definition of notability your company does not meet our notability guidelines, no matter how revolutionary its practices are. Understood. However, there are two points I'd like to make here. First, the lead makes clear that Israel targeted "mosques, schools and private homes." Attempts to add the following qualification, "becuase Israel believed they were used as military platforms" or phrasing to that effect, were reverted. Now you have to be fair and balanced here. If you say that one side attacked civilian infrastructure, then provide an explanation as to why it was targetd. It is well known and established that Hamas hit civilian targets. Just look at how many Israeli civilians were killed and injured as a result of indiscriminate rocket attacks since 2002. Clinics, schools and synogouges were also hit and I have sources for this. Second, I think it's a two-way street here and both sided have to be fully presented for the article to obtain a level of jounalistic integrity that nearly all editors desire. Hi Blanchardb, latetely you followed Brendan132 who was vandalizing articles and his account has been blocked indefinitely. I don't know if you have the time to take a closer look at the discussion here (after the first paragraph). It is not by chance that Brendan's first edit was in the biography of Meher Baba about a point we had been debating earlier. There is an editor with a long history of creating fuss in this article and its discussion page, who has repeatedly attempted to edit the article (GA) against consensus [2] and the article was protected for 3 days starting 9th Sept. [3] He was warned of being blocked from the article and so far he has not attempted any edits but keeps making a fuss in the discussion. When I saw Brendan132 I suspected this editor, as it was all in his style, so I placed a bait in the discussion, knowing that he couldn't resist answering. An answer came indeed from an IP he has used at times, signed manually as "Johnathon", who appears to be grieving for a blocked account due to this vandal. I then offered links to proof that this account has been used by this editor and expressed my doubt on the identity of "Johnathon" and got a long sermon on the Baba community in Australia. I know I am taxing your time with this story, but if you can take a look, maybe you can help or at least advise me if it is better to pursue this further (and how) or simply to drop this case. As I stated in my edit summary, the number of volunteers is not acceptable as an assertion of notability, since, as you say, I have to do research (and I do mean any research at all outside the article itself) to check their level of commitment. The article, in its current state, will probably not survive a deletion discussion. The flaws that need to be addressed in priority are those: three references are cited, yet by virtue of being primary sources (that is, sources affiliated with the subject or its partners), they do not establish any notability for the project, according to our definition of notability. What you need to find is sources that are in no way affiliated with SOS (or even Smithsonian, for that matter, given that Smithsonian is shown to be a partner), that are not trivial, and that are not the kind anyone out there can post (such as blogs, forums, etc.). See what we consider reliable sources.

Soon after the speedy delection tag was removed, being replaced by a primary sources one. I have then added some references related to Forship. Please advise whether these are sufficient or if any further consideration is still applicable.
• I have noticed that you have eliminated the "and solutions" expression of the first paragraph. I dont't have any objections to it, but I would like to better understand (a) what exactly is the Wikipedia interpretation of a "solution" and (b) what motivates considering it as advertising, in contrast to "products" or "services"?

The article now meets our requirements for notability and verifiability. As for the term "solutions," it is typically used in promotional material (and in Wikipedia I haven't seen it used by anyone who doesn't have a close connection with the subject, unless we're talking about a chemical solution, e.g. salt in water). It implies a claim of automatic customer satisfaction, and a dissatisfied client would basically reword the sentence in his mind, replacing this term with the term non-solution. The term therefore has an inherent promotional connotation and must therefore be avoided in encyclopedic coverage. Notability and references

Hi Blanchrdb. I may not fully understand the criteria expected to establish notability and references to the article for "Evil Cats", but after a review of the guidelines, I thought the provided reference was sufficient. For example, "The Bookseller" is a widely read industry trade publication within the United Kingdom, which has been available online since 1997, and has been available in print since 1858, so I think it qualifies as a reputable outside source. Re-reading the content of the linked article, I believe I did not misstate anything, but perhaps I've missed something?

Concerning the notability, perhaps a bigger point could be made of the fact that rather few works exist in this genre (dark humor cartoon books); a new entry from a bestselling author is of at least some significance.

After checking the Bookseller reference, I must tell you that it's probably not enough, but it is a sign that, possibly in the near future, there will be more than one reference about the book. Please note that the criterion states, The book has been the subject of multiple, (...) published works appearing in sources that are independent of the book itself.

What do you mean dispute resolution?? Let me explain this one more time, this IP adress is a vandal and is continuously making opinionated edits that I constantly am reverting, I already tried my best to settle things, but no matter what I do, this IP will just continuously edit war regardless of the fact that I have gave a reliable source throughout this whole matter, and the fact that this just happened even though that genre has been on the articles for months. I've already left several messages to this IP address about the matter, yet gives me the same unworthy answer (for example: see this and see this) to the subject, so at this point there is absolutely nothing I can do, and this is exactly why I took it to WP:AIV. -- GunMetal Angel 17:40, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

Reverting of my changes to the Asian fetish article

Asian fetish survived 5 WP:AFD as noted on the discussion page for this article Talk:Asian_fetish. Naturally, there is a very determined group of people who are determined to mitigate all contributions to this page along with all related articles.

Users are removing the following valid contribution from the Asian fetish page. And now you've removed the entry as well. That along with another valid entry [4].

Phoebe Eng uses the term Asiaphile to describe men who are willing to violate social norms for their Asian fetish.

“ Only one know instinctively that congregating can cut them off from the general flow of a gathering, forming a social boundary that only the most enthusiastic Asiaphile would want to transcend. ”

Here's the latest removal of the entry [5]. Here's the last time it was removed [6].

This quote is needed because for many years people have been taking entries from Phoebe Eng's book out of context in order to promote their own agenda. Here's one example that exist on the page [7]. Here's another one [8].

Please read my comments. Phoebe Eng's book Warrior Women have been for many years taken out of context by the people who are trying to delete this article to push their agenda. They would take one sentence that she put in out of the whole book as a counterpoint to her overwhelmingly negative view on Asian fetish and made it seems like she think that this liberates Asian females. Please read my comments above and read the references I am linking. The whole article is filled with this garbage. Books taken out of context. Opinions being presented as scientific studies. No it's not that simple. People do not come out and write, the following is just a counterpoint. Please do not use this one sentence as what defines my whole book. Counterpoints are supposed to be self explanatory in a well written book. Considering that she spends so much time for that one chapter of Asian fetish providing the negative side of Asian fetish. Only a person who refused to acknowledge her point would miss that it is a counterpoint.

Here are some quotes from her book.

“ While hypersexualized, commodifying images exist for all women, and especially women of color, the image of the Asian woman combines with this the notion of ultrapassivity. Sexuality for an Asian woman is so tightly wound up in issues of power and global economic order that it is virtually impossible to address the spector of an Asian woman's sexuality without examining the subtle roles of governments and enterprise in perpetuating this situation, especially in developing countries. ”

To provide a counterpoint to an overwhelmingly negative portrayal of Asian fetish, Phoebe, as any respectable author provided the following counterpoint:

“ Not all of us, for instance, agree that the current trend of "Asian fetish" is bad. In fact, for some of us, the new visibility of Asian women, even though stereotyped, can actually be liberating. ”

From the last one sentence out of her whole book that is the only sentence that even attempts to see something positive about asian fetish people have put on the [Asian fetish] article the following entry that obviously taking Phoebe's words out of context and is fraudulent.

“ But Eng does not agree that the attention that might be given to Asian women is bad. On the contrary, she calls it "liberating ”

Francisco Cruz and WP:PNT

Hi Blanchardb,

Your comments at my talk page are entirely in my own thinking. In case my reasoning was not clear, I explain briefly. The stuff was dumped in WP:Template documentation where clearly it is inappropriate. The easiest thing to do would be to revert it, but I checked for the name in mainspace and found it empty (though there are similar results on searches and DABs etc, none for this page). I created the article just in case there was any notability that I would not know myself, to give others visibility of it, and then listed at PNT (the first time I have added rather than subtracted an article from there through translating it).

I copy pasted the text in, and did not even do the minimal fixup for wikifying etc that I would usually do had I wished it to be kept. In my POV it is not notable, and should be deleted. It may seem strange to create an article immediately to PROD or SPEEDY it, but I did not want it to be lost without a trace. If I start wikifying it there is a prima facie case that it is of interest (which of course is not the same as it being notable), i.e. because one editor is interested in it, leading to perrennial argument. Thus I stood off editing even the most minor mistakes.

You did right to PROD it if you think it escapes SPEEDY, but I think it is not, of itself, notable. But I am not qualified to say is not. But I am not qualified to know if this person is notable in other ways. I will happily fixup the translation if another editor shows notability, otherwise leave it at PROD. I will add my support (for deletion) there along these lines, probably rephrased.

I hope from this rather long-winded explanation you appreciate my reasoning and that it was not done just by hitting a button. Thanks for all your good work. As Pascal wrote to his cousin, "I have only made this letter longer as I have not had time to make it shorter".

Dear Blanchardb,

As a God-fearing man myself, I am happy to hear about your good work keeping Wikipedia honest. I have suffered repeated acts of vandalism on my Wikipedia page entry Harold von Kursk over the past several months. Regrettably, a very bitter ex-girlfriend has on several occasions posted sick, malicious, false, and libelous "additions" on my Wik page. Thankfully, a few friends have caught these and edited them off my page. But today I discovered another sick posting and given that I do not wish to check my Wik page entry on a daily basis anymore (I have been checking it very regularly over the last two months) I would kindly ask you or another administrator to delete my entry immediately or place it under long-term protection so that my psycho ex can no longer post those horrible comments. But perhaps it is easier to simply delter my Wik page entry altogether to keep my ex from renewed acts of vandalism which would inevitably draw me into a legal action against her which I would really not want to begin since it is costly and since she is still the mother of two of my children.

I did the second edit because there is no other obvious way to contact you except to edit this page, and it seemed to me easier to just re-trigger the monitoring software you are using.

I didn't know that the mention of something as clearly esoteric as this creature in a relatively widely-read comic strip is "barely related trivia". In that case, perhaps you should remove the other comic strip reference on the page (which, by the way, links to a much less well-known comic strip), or remove this section altogether. Because it seems that a more in-depth mention was made into that other strip, and the strip is still available online although it is three years old. Per WP:V, since the Sherman's Lagoon website only displays strips going back one month, that means a month from now the mention will become unverifiable online, and since we are talking about trivia, I doubt that anyone will bother to check their old newspapers. Well if you read the other strip -- http://www.sheldoncomics.com/archive/060326.html -- you'll see that it actually doesn't specifically mention "yeti crab". The Sherman's Lagoon strip mentions it specifically and even has a cartoonized image of it. I linked not to the Sherman's Lagoon website, but to a copy of the specific strip at an online comics syndicate: http://content.comicskingdom.net/Shermans_Lagoon/Shermans_Lagoon.20091119_large.gif. If you change the 2009 in the URL to 2007, you see that they have strips at least two years old.
